tinleyjunction.com news the tinley junction | November 23, 2016 | 9 LW East Music Boosters tune into 5K tradition Ryan Esguerra Freelance Reporter The first true cold weather of the year was not enough to stop nearly 100 runners and walkers from completing the third annual Miles for Music 5K fundraiser, hosted by the Lincoln-Way East Music Boosters, Saturday, Nov. 19 in Frankfort’s Prairie Park. This is the first year that the Miles for Music 5K run has been held by Lincoln- Way East. Over the last two years, the event had been hosted by the recently closed Lincoln-Way North. Trudy Sturino is a newly elected president of the group, and she came over from North and fought to bring the 5K event with her. Sturino said she saw firsthand of the event’s success in the Frankfort community, as well as the potential it had to raise money. “The previous two years were such a great turnout at North,” Sturino said. “When we came over to East, we spoke with the band boosters here, and they thought it would still be a good event for our organization. This event is important because it draws on resources from outside our own music community. To draw from people in our regular community as well and get them involved.” Proceeds of the Miles for Music will help fund the school’s long list of music programs throughout the year. Music programs supported by the booster club include band, jazz, chorus, vocal, marching band, instrumentalists and an orchestra. East band director Dr. Bert Johnson was on hand at the event this year. Johnson – who is an avid runner himself – said unique events like these benefit the community, the participants and Lincoln-Way East sophomore Tom Arndt is the winner of the men’s division of the 5K. the school. “As far as the fundraising aspect goes, there is really nothing like this,” Johnson said. “Instead of buying food or things;, people have the chance to come out and support the music program by exercising. Running is a culture, and those who run are always looking for running opportunities closer to home.” The race – which was separated into two categories of runners and walkers – awarded medals and a complementary gift bag of lotions to each of the top three finishers in their respective age and gender group. Overall winners in the men and the women divisions were given a trophy. Lincoln-Way East sophomore Tom Arndt finished first overall with a time of 19:20, and fellow classmate Jordan Jacobucci rounded out the rest of the race; Jacobucci came in with 22:22. Arndt, who is a member of Michael (left) and Bill Sherman, both of Frankfort try to stay warm before the Miles for Music 5K, which was held Saturday, Nov. 19 at the Prairie Park. photos by Laurie Fanelli/22nd Century Media The Miles for Music 5K entered in its third year, bringing out 100 participants. the school’s track and field and cross country teams, said he came out to run last minute at the request of a friend in the band program. “My friend Cameron came up to me this morning and asked me to come out here and run a 5K,” Arndt said. “I am happy I came out because I love to run, and it makes me feel good that I can run in support of him and my other friends in the program. It feels good to win as well, not too often you get to go out and win a race.” Also in attendance at the event to show his support was Frankfort Mayor Jim Holland. Holland said he, too, was pleased with the turnout and emphasized the importance of supporting high school organizations like the Lincoln-Way East Music Boosters. “It is part of the entire community,” Holland said. “We are in a community that cares and wants to help organizations that bring people together to support institutions like our band program.” Sturino said she is grateful for all of the support from the Frankfort community, and she is excited for the music program to continue to work with the Village of Frankfort to grow the event each year. “Initially, the first year we talked about doing this, there was a lot of things we didn’t know,” Sturino said. “Now we have a baseline for what to expect, and the village is very supportive of us. So hopefully, we can continue that relationship and grow each and every year.”
