Homer Glen event to benefit GiGi’s Playhouse
RYAN ESGUERRA
Freelance Reporter
The arrival of the holiday
season means that it is time
to start the long process of
holiday shopping.
This year, the Homer
Glen Junior Woman’s Club
wanted to give women from
the area a fun event to start
their holiday shopping lists,
and they did so by hosting
the first Holiday Sip & Shop
fundraiser for ladies Friday,
Nov. 18, at American
Legion John Olson Post 18
in Lockport.
“One of the things that we
were trying to do was give
ladies a night to get their
shopping done in an environment
that they could enjoy
themselves,” said Jodi
Martiniak, co-chair of fundraising
for Homer Glen Junior
Woman’s Club. “Being
that it is so close to the holiday
season, now is a perfect
time for women to come out
and have a ladies’ night.”
Attendees shopped
from 27 different vendors
sporting a variety of
products that included
clothing, jewelry, baked
goods, skin care products,
kitchen and handmade
items. Also at the event for
shoppers were appetizers, a
cash bar, a raffle featuring
items from local businesses,
a ladies’ self-defense booth
and a host of door prizes.
Proceeds of the event
went to non-profit Gigi’s
Playhouse in Tinley Park
and CASA of Will County
in Joliet.
“We sought out vendors
from a variety of different areas,”
Martiniak said. “We selected
a lot of them based on
category. We wanted to give
people a lot to choose from.
“We do a lot of fundraising
work for national
and local charities, and
Vendors sell a variety of items, including clothing, jewelry,
baked goods, skin care products, kitchen and handmade
items, at the Holiday Sip & Shop.
we thought [Gigi’s and
CASA] would be a good fit
for us.”
Marie Gesiakowski, of
Frankfort and owner of
Notecards by Marie Grace,
has been selling note cards,
framed professional photos
and hand crafted serving
dishes for two years. Gesiakowski
said she attends
roughly 10 to 12 events
similar to the Holiday Sip
& Shop each year but was
particularly impressed with
this event.
“I can say that this one is
very well-attended,” Gesiakowski
said. “I have been
to events where there are
not many people, so this is
nice.”
Gesiakowski added the
event’s atmosphere was part
of what made it so enjoyable.
“The room is decorated
beautifully,” she said. “I
like it a lot; everyone is nice
and friendly. I am having a
great time just being here.”
Kathy Mustafa, of Homer
Glen, typically attends
larger shopping events in
downtown Chicago when
she starts to shop for the
holiday season. Mustafa
said that despite the event’s
smaller size, the community
that forms as a result is what
appeals to her the most.
“Events like these bring
people together,” Mustafa
said. “These are people in
your community. You are going
to see these people in your
town, and it is really nice to
have something that gives us
a chance to connect.”
Despite her group residing
in Homer Glen, Martiniak
said that she enjoys
coming to Lockport and
sharing the holiday spirit
with her neighbors.
“We are from Homer
Glen, but Lockport is a
neighboring community
that we appreciate,” Martiniak
said. “We really wanted
to share this atmosphere
with them.”
Martiniak added that it is
the goal of the Homer Glen
Junior Woman’s Club to return
next year for the same
Cousins Taryn White (left) and Natalie Rigoni sell handmade crochet items from their
business, Hooked on Sugar, which was named in honor of their grandmother, Friday, Nov.
Kathy Langford (left) and Beverly Wurst, both of Lockport, fix themselves cups of cocoa
during a quick break from shopping at the event.
event, one she said that will
hopefully be bigger than the
one this year.
“Any event that you try
to do, you hope that you
can repeat it the following
year,” Martiniak said. “We
are fortunate in that a lot of
the events we have tried to
put on have been successful
enough to do again. We hope
this event is no different.”

“Symptoms of a hormonal imbalance or chronic undiagnosed condition
range from migraines and chronic headaches to memory loss, brain fog insomnia
or fatigue and anxiety and depression. If you have been suffering
from any of these symptoms and have not gotten the answers or results from
Tinley Park Village Board
Video gaming approved at Odyssey Sweet Spot
F. Amanda Tugade, Editor
Video gaming now is to be
available at Odyssey Sweet
Spot Sports and Driving
Range.
In a 4-2 vote Nov. 15, the
Tinley Park Village Board
decided to alter Odyssey’s
A-1 liquor license to an
AV-1 liquor license, which
allows video gaming on the
premises in addition to selling
liquor.
Trustees Michael Pannitto
and Kevin Suggs both cast
dissenting votes.
In the Nov. 1 meeting,
Pannitto expressed that he
does not like the idea of having
video gaming at local establishments.
“It’s nothing personal
against the business,” Pannitto
said. “It’s just the way
the whole gambling thing
spreads, I’d like to see some
more control on it.”
To the same point Pannitto
also voted “no” to a
request from Little Joe’s Famous
Pizza and Restaurante
to have video gaming at its
operation, while the others,
including Suggs, approved
the proposal.
Tinley talks raising
amusement tax to 5 percent
Officials have begun
the discussion to raise the
amusement tax from 4 percent
to 5, which would take
effect Jan. 1, 2017.
This proposed change
comes in an effort to update
that tax, which was enacted
in 1990 and affected admission
prices for entertainment
events, including plays, musicals,
sporting events, movies
and live performances
held at the Hollywood Casino
Amphitheatre.
Trustee Brian Maher first
visit us online at www.tinleyjunction.com
presented that movie theaters
should no longer be
a part of the tax, since “the
theater to which this provision
applied subsequently
closed, and thus this exemption
is no longer applicable
or necessary.”
He added the 1 percent tax
increase comes in as a way
to stay in alignment with
surrounding communities.
During public comment,
Tinley Park resident Michael
Paus inquired about the
amusement tax and whether
or not it would go against
the Village’s recent branding
campaign to turn the town
into a music hub, starting
with the amphitheatre.
“Correct me if I’m wrong,
but isn’t the branding campaign
about music?” Paus
asked officials. “And now,
you’re going to tax it more?
It’s kind of like you’re getting
the branding campaign
off on the wrong foot. You’re
taxing music and, in general,
when you tax something you
get less of it. So, it’s not jiving.”
He also asked how much
more revenue the village
would receive from the 1
percent, but at the time of the
meeting Maher was not able
to provide the numbers.
Honoring the champs
The Tinley Park Village
Board meeting held Nov. 15
at Village Hall started a little
differently than usual.
That Tuesday evening
kicked off with a round of
applause and a standing
ovation from officials who
recognized the Tinley Park
Bulldogs’ most recent feat:
claiming the 2016 River Valley
Youth Football championship
title.
The 32-member junior
varsity white team lined
up at the front of the room,
while their parents stood in
the back, snapping as many
photos as they could.
“The junior varsity white
Bulldogs football team won
the Super Bowl Nov. 6 in
overtime 20-14 over the
Orland Park Pioneers over
at Joliet’s ATI Stadium to
cap off the undefeated 12-0
championship season,”
Trustee Brian Younker announced.
“This team allotted the
fewest points of any team of
all four levels, which consists
of 78 football teams in
the River Conference,” he
continued.
(For a full story on the
Bulldogs’ win and undefeated
season, see Page 35).
A helping hand
The praise from the boys’
feat carried through to the
next item on the agenda.
Mayor Dave Seaman and the
trustees recognized seven
people for helping a woman
who allegedly was hit by a
drunken driver.
Ella Jenkover, Ronald
Cronk and his son Mason
Penwitt, William Neibert
and his son Ryan, Saloan
Goulet, and Scott Hauss all
played an important role in
saving Laura Hettiger’s life
the late afternoon of Sept.
15.
Trustee T.J. Grady and
Village Clerk Patrick Rea
explained that several drivers
noticed a drunk driver
traveling northbound on
Ridgeland Avenue near
Vollmer Road.
“One driver, Scott Hauss,
called 911 to alert authorities,
while another driver,
Ronald Cronk, told his son
Mason, to start recording the
driver’s behavior,” Rea read
from a resolution. “At 183rd
Street, Laura Hettiger and
Ella Jenkover were walking
along side the road. The
driver lost control and ran
into Laura Hettiger, causing
several severe injuries. At
this point, the driver did not
stop and continued north on
Ridgeland.”
Hettiger, who was present
at the meeting, took over
the conversation and shared
what she could remember of
the incident.
“After the impact, I was
on the ground trying to figure
out if this what death felt
like,” she recalled. “I heard
Ella shout out, ‘Call the
police; call an ambulance;
call 911;’ and I gratefully
thought, ‘I know what she’s
saying.’ I shouted out my
cellphone code, and I was
grateful that she understood
what I said.
“Unknown to anyone at the
time, I had five broken bones
in my thigh, including my
hip; five broken ribs and two
hairline fractures in my neck,
requiring a neck brace for a
month,” Hettiger continued.
“Plus, a broken right arm that
could not be repaired until
two weeks later.”
She added a Tinley Park
police officer and a representative
from the State Attorney’s
Office “informed [me]
there was an entire video of
the incident.”
She said, “I’m so grateful
to Mason for having his
iPad and his video recording
skills documenting the incident.”
As Hettiger concluded her
“thank you” speech by expressing
gratitude to those
individuals, responders,
family members and friends,
Seaman stepped in to contribute
more to the conversation.
“This represents the real
definition of a hero — basically,
ordinary people do extraordinary
things, and they
stepped up to do it,” he said.
“So, we are grateful. Thank
you.”

Consolidated High School D230 Board of Education
School Board officials take closer look
at proposed 2016 property tax levy
Jon DePaolis
Freelance Reporter
Consolidated High
School District 230 Board
of Education unveiled
Thursday, Nov. 17, what
it intends to levy for in
fiscal year 2016 — and the
number should look familiar
to those paying attention.
The district is asking for
a 2016 property tax levy extension
of $107,603,834 —
the same amount that was
extended in 2015.
Assistant Superintendent
for Business Services John
Lavelle previewed the levy
request during the board of
education meeting, held at
Sandburg High School in
Orland Park.
“This is another zero
levy, and I believe this is
the fourth consecutive [flat]
levy and fifth in the last six,”
he said. “It’s good that we
are able to ask for the same
amount that was extended
in the prior year and try to
control that. This tonight is
just looking at the estimated
figures.”
According to his memo
to the School Board,
Lavelle said local taxes
account for nearly 83
percent of the revenue
received by the district in
the last fiscal year.
The board members voted
6-0 — with School Board
member Dennis Ryan absent
because of his attendance
at a state board of
education meeting — to
establish the levy numbers,
which will be voted on for
formal adoption at the Dec.
22 meeting. Lavelle said the
levy extension request must
be filed with the county
clerk by Dec. 27.
School Board member
Round It Up
A brief recap of action from the Thursday, Nov. 17
meeting of the D230 School Board
•The D230 School Board accepted a donation valued
at $750 from Thomas G. Mulvey for T-shirts for the
Sandburg girls volleyball team.
•The School Board members voted 6-0 to approve
the payment of D230’s bills in the amount of $3.04
million, as well as payroll in the amount of $3.91
million.
Tony Serratore said he
recently heard great
feedback from the finance
committee about the
district’s ability to again
ask for a levy extension of
0 percent.
“I think it is a testament
to what goes on in this
district and the buildings at
the administration level that
not only can we balance our
budgets the last 13 years
but we can do it without
asking for an increase in
the levy in five of the last
six years,” Serratore said. “I
am continually amazed by
that and how we run things
here.”
Sandburg’s success
continues with faculty,
students
Several D230 students
and teachers were
recognized during the
meeting, including
Sandburg cross country
coach John O’Malley, who
was honored for being
named the 2015-2016
National Federal of State
High School Association
Boys Cross Country Coach
of the Year winner.
Also during the meeting’s
Curriculum and Instruction
Spotlight, Sandburg
economics teachers Colleen
Mulcahy and Christina
Simpson showcased how
they incorporated online
teaching methods into
their daily lessons, which
led to an increase in test
scores from last year to this
year.
Meanwhile, Sandburg
junior Tiara Newman was
awarded a $500 scholarship
from Moraine Valley
Community College for
a video she created for a
competition that allowed
her to interview Moraine
Valley staff in a field she
chose as being a future
career path.
“I was able to attend a
celebration breakfast that
honored Tiara for winning
that competition,” Sandburg
Principal Deb Baker
said. “It was really a great
celebration in many ways,
but especially because her
peers were thrilled for her.
One of them actually introduced
her and talked a little
bit about her strengths, and
I want to repeat some of
them.
“‘Tiara Newman is a
poised, accomplished and
driven student. She’s an excellent
peer model, who is
always helpful and always
kind.’”
“I’m very proud to present
her to the board of education
tonight for this recognition,”
Baker concluded.
LW East Music Boosters tune into 5K tradition
Ryan Esguerra
Freelance Reporter
The first true cold weather
of the year was not enough
to stop nearly 100 runners
and walkers from completing
the third annual Miles
for Music 5K fundraiser,
hosted by the Lincoln-Way
East Music Boosters, Saturday,
Nov. 19 in Frankfort’s
Prairie Park.
This is the first year that
the Miles for Music 5K run
has been held by Lincoln-
Way East. Over the last two
years, the event had been
hosted by the recently closed
Lincoln-Way North.
Trudy Sturino is a newly
elected president of the
group, and she came over
from North and fought to
bring the 5K event with her.
Sturino said she saw firsthand
of the event’s success
in the Frankfort community,
as well as the potential it had
to raise money.
“The previous two years
were such a great turnout at
North,” Sturino said. “When
we came over to East, we
spoke with the band boosters
here, and they thought it
would still be a good event
for our organization. This
event is important because
it draws on resources from
outside our own music
community. To draw from
people in our regular community
as well and get them
involved.”
Proceeds of the Miles for
Music will help fund the
school’s long list of music
programs throughout the
year. Music programs supported
by the booster club
include band, jazz, chorus,
vocal, marching band, instrumentalists
and an orchestra.
East band director Dr.
Bert Johnson was on hand
at the event this year. Johnson
– who is an avid runner
himself – said unique events
like these benefit the community,
the participants and
Lincoln-Way East sophomore Tom Arndt is the winner of
the men’s division of the 5K.
the school.
“As far as the fundraising
aspect goes, there is really
nothing like this,” Johnson
said. “Instead of buying
food or things;, people have
the chance to come out and
support the music program
by exercising. Running is a
culture, and those who run
are always looking for running
opportunities closer to
home.”
The race – which was
separated into two categories
of runners and walkers
– awarded medals and
a complementary gift bag
of lotions to each of the
top three finishers in their
respective age and gender
group. Overall winners in
the men and the women divisions
were given a trophy.
Lincoln-Way East sophomore
Tom Arndt finished
first overall with a time of
19:20, and fellow classmate
Jordan Jacobucci rounded
out the rest of the race; Jacobucci
came in with 22:22.
Arndt, who is a member of
Michael (left) and Bill Sherman, both of Frankfort try to stay warm before the Miles for
Music 5K, which was held Saturday, Nov. 19 at the Prairie Park.
photos by Laurie Fanelli/22nd Century Media
The Miles for Music 5K entered in its third year, bringing out 100 participants.
the school’s track and field
and cross country teams,
said he came out to run last
minute at the request of a
friend in the band program.
“My friend Cameron
came up to me this morning
and asked me to come out
here and run a 5K,” Arndt
said. “I am happy I came
out because I love to run,
and it makes me feel good
that I can run in support of
him and my other friends in
the program. It feels good
to win as well, not too often
you get to go out and win a
race.”
Also in attendance at the
event to show his support
was Frankfort Mayor Jim
Holland. Holland said he,
too, was pleased with the
turnout and emphasized the
importance of supporting
high school organizations
like the Lincoln-Way East
Music Boosters.
“It is part of the entire
community,” Holland said.
“We are in a community that
cares and wants to help organizations
that bring people
together to support institutions
like our band program.”
Sturino said she is grateful
for all of the support from
the Frankfort community,
and she is excited for the
music program to continue
to work with the Village of
Frankfort to grow the event
each year.
“Initially, the first year we
talked about doing this, there
was a lot of things we didn’t
know,” Sturino said. “Now
we have a baseline for what
to expect, and the village is
very supportive of us. So
hopefully, we can continue
that relationship and grow
each and every year.”

week’s Standout Student.
What is one essential you
must have when studying?
I prefer quiet (of course),
moderate temperature, and
music, depending on whether
or not I need to do excessive
reading or not.
What do you like to do when
not in school or studying?
I like to write, watch movies,
and play video games in
my spare time.
What is your dream job?
I aspire to be a film director,
writer of some description,
or artist (in order of
most preferred).
What are some of your most
played songs on your iPod?
I don’t use an iPod to hold
music; I either burn MP3s or
use CDs. When I do listen
to music, however, I tend to
gravitate more to classical or
synth rock/pop.
What is one thing people
don’t know about you?
I also enjoy listening to
military marches in my spare
time.
Whom do you look up to and
why?
I look up to my mother, as
she repeatedly works a difficult
job every day just to
give me a chance at success.
photo Submitted
What do you keep under
your bed?
I only keep boxes I don’t
need beneath my bed.
Who is your favorite teacher
and why?
My favorite teacher was
Senora Andrews because
she got me invested in a language
[Spanish] that I didn’t
care too much for.
What’s your favorite class
and why?
Any kind of history class
is my favorite, as I have always
liked learning about
and from the past.
What’s one thing that stands
out about your school?
The massive amount of
people who clog up the hallways
during passing periods
stand out in the most inconvenient
way.
What extracurricular(s) do
you wish your school had?
I wish our school had
more writing and directing
extracurriculars.
What’s your morning
routine?
On a typical day, I wake
up, get dressed and eat breakfast
– just like everyone else.
FROM THE MOKENA MESSENGER
The Village of Mokena is
in good financial standing,
according to an audit
presented to the board of
trustees Monday, Nov. 14.
“The Village of Mokena
can be very proud of its financial
strength,” said Bill
Hanley, of Wipfli LLP, the
firm that handed the audit.
“There is a very strong fund
balance reported. There is
almost $22 million of unrestricted
fund balance – and
$12 million of [that] is with
the water and sewer fund,
and that is earmarked for
future activities and other
projects in those areas.”
Hanley said the general
fund has about $4.2 million
of unassigned fund balance,
which he called “very good.”
“This fund balance represents
about 42 percent of a
year’s expenditures,” Hanley
said. “To say that another
way … the Village could
operate in the general fund
without revenue for about
five months, and then you
could just draw on your fund
balance to pay your bills. So,
it is a very strong fund balance
being reported.”
Hanley said the Village
has cash in investments totaling
about $23 million.
“During the fiscal year
into June 30, 2016, compared
to the prior year, the
net position increased by
about $1.2 million,” he said.
Hanley also said the Village’s
bond rating through
Standard & Poor’s Financial
Services LLC is AA+.
In addition, both of the
Village’s pension funds – for
the police and for the Illinois
Municipal Retirement Fund
– are stable.
FROM THE NEW LENOX PATRIOT
New Lenox students send
love through letters to the
troops
Every letter was unique —
clad with colorful pictures,
hand-drawn flags and handwritten
notes.
Throughout November,
hundreds of students in the
New Lenox School District
122 thanked veterans for their
service and wished those
serving a happy Thanksgiving
and a merry Christmas.
A handful of those students
from kindergarten
through fifth grade had the
opportunity to meet Doug
Bobrowski, also known as
“Dougie Stylz” from US99,
and share the letters they
wrote to veterans.
The letters were “colored
with love,“ said Lori
Motsch, principal at Spencer
Trail Kindergarten Center.
“It’s a great way for
5-year-olds to feel connected,”
she said.
Students from Spencer
Trail, Spencer Pointe and
Spencer Crossing met up with
Bobrowski to read their letters
aloud. He recorded their voices,
and they were aired Nov.
16-18 on radio station US99.
Bobrowski said the impact
of the event really struck
him when he met a 26-year
veteran who received some
of the letters from schools
in the Chicago area and later
had the opportunity to meet
some of the students who
had written the letters.
“[The students] are really
making a difference, and we
really appreciate it,” he said.
Bobrowski’s goal each
year is to collect 10,000 letters
for the troops.
“Pointe alone has written
over 600 letters,” said Kim
Gray, principal at Spencer
Pointe Primary School. “We
asked our parents to write
letters too, so we had a good
amount of parents write letters
and send them in to school.”
FROM THE LOCKPORT LEGEND
Lockport art shop a dream
come true for owner
Leanne Wargowsky and
her family went out for dinner
in downtown Lockport
one night in September, and
parked on State Street outside
a vacant storefront with “for
rent” signs in the window.
The Joliet woman had
been looking for a space
where she could fulfill her
lifelong ambition of opening
her own art shop, but
little did she know that less
than two months later her
dream would become a reality.
Wargowsky’s 13-yearold
daughter, Katie, texted
the phone number on the
“for rent” sign to her mom’s
sister, Laura Trento, and the
wheels were set in motion.
“I called the number,”
said Trento, of New Lenox.
“I said, ‘I’ve got nothing to
lose,’ and that’s where it started.
I called, talked to the owners,
and I called Leanne back
and said, ‘this might work.’”
Wargowsky and Trento
opened Creative Wings Art
Shoppe earlier this month,
and held a ribbon-cutting ceremony
Nov. 12 to formally
announce their presence at
1011 S. State St. Wargowsky
has wanted to own an art shop
for as long as she can remember,
and recalled that as a
child she watched oil painter
William Alexander on PBS.
“I would sit with my crayons
and try to do what he did
with oils on the screen,” she
said. “So my love of art has
been a lifelong passion. I’ve
worked in health care to pay
the bills, and always had this
dream not quite knowing if
we could make it, but here
we are.”
b.kapa@22ndcenturymedia.com
I
don’t know about you,
but I didn’t figure out
what I was good at until
well after high school. Last
Friday, I was able to travel
up to Evanston to cover
the first day of the IHSA
state swimming and diving
finals.
I got to thinking on my
two-hour commute about
how much time and energy
these young athletes spend
on their sport and how for
those elite few this will play
out very well for them in the
future.
I recently had the
opportunity to talk with a
young woman named Emma
Ruchala.
Ruchala is an Andrew
High School senior competing
in the state finals for
diving; this is the for the
fourth time she has attended
state during her high school
career.
Part of my interview with
her included asking questions
on how many hours a
day and how many days of
the week she practices. The
answer is a lot. It’s more
time than I spent on any one
thing in high school besides
homework.
I wasn’t an athlete in high
school, and I didn’t figure
out what I was talented at
until well after. So, you
can imagine my amazement
when I found out
that a 17-year-old had this
much drive and dedication
to one thing — and at such
a young age. It’s amazing
what student-athletes can
accomplish by 16, 17, even
18 years old.
Now, think about your favorite
sports players, in any
sport, really. The ones that
come to mind for me are
Michael Jordan, Jonathan
Toews or perhaps a more
recent Chicago hero, Kris
Bryant.
They all put all of their
time, energy and dedication
into what has made them
great. There are interviews
with Jordan about his
struggle with basketball
early on; Toews left home
at just 15 years old to play
hockey (he now has three
Stanley Cups and two
Olympic gold medals); and
Bryant was just named the
2016 MVP for the National
League.
Ruchala finished fourth
on the first day of the state
finals in the semi-finals
portion. Happy and cheerful
on her accomplishment,
she talked to her friends,
and after a bit, she turned
her attention to me.
Her last dive of the day
didn’t go as planned, but
that didn’t seem to matter
to her. Tomorrow is another
day, with another chance to
improve.
Without the stress that
adult life puts on these
young athletes, they are able
to focus on what matters to
them. And why can’t we,
adults, do the same?
So, let us challenge
ourselves to strive for better
and to put our efforts into
something that makes us
truly happy — even if it’s a
small win.
Without even knowing he
teacher was told he had won
the Illinois Drafting Educators
Association R. Tim Phillip
Award for 2016 for being
one of the best Illinois drafting
educators.
“It was pretty exciting,
and obviously it was a bit of
a surprise,” Brown said.
Each fall, one teacher from
around the state is chosen to
receive the IDEA’s award.
Brown was nominated by a
former student teacher, Ryan
Altenburg, and he formally
received his award at the end
of last month at the IDEA
Fall Conference in Bloomington.
“I owe where I’m at right
now with my career [to
Brown],” said Altenburg,
who student taught under
Brown in the fall of 2013.
“He’s been a great role model
to me.”
Altenburg, who now
teaches at Bolingbrook High
School, said he adopted
many of Brown’s principles
into his own classroom. He
has even admittedly “stolen”
some of the projects
the LTHS teacher has his
students complete, which
has led to some of his own
students landing jobs in the
field.
“He helped me understand
that it really is just about
helping the kids discover
what they’re good at and
where they want to take it,”
Altenburg said.
Lincoln-Way Area Chorale en route to Carnegie
Amanda Stoll, Assistant Editor
The Lincoln-Way Area
Chorale will have a lot more
on their plates than usual
this year around Thanksgiving.
They just wrapped sharing
their “Holiday Memories,”
an annual holiday concert
that was held on Nov. 20
at Lincoln-Way Central
High School. Now, they
are getting ready to fly to
New York to perform at
Carnegie Hall the following
weekend.
“Two years ago, we did
a performance of Handel’s
‘Messiah,’” said Lincoln-
Way Area Chorale Director
Gregory Day. “That caught
the attention of Carnegie
Hall, and they’ve invited us
to come out to perform.
“It’s my job to have them
collectively gather their talents.
I channel their abilities
and come up with the sound
that we want for a finished
product.”
Two years ago, Day —
who gives much of the
credit to the chorale — was
inducted into the International
Symposium for Choral
Directors and Choral
Composers.
“On the certificate it says,
‘for taking a community
choir and raising them up to
a professional level,’” said
Day, who spent 35 years
teaching in public schools.
During his retirement, an
opportunity to direct the
choir came up, so he applied
and was chosen.
“I’ve tried to take what
was already a very good,
musically-sound group and
make them even better,” he
said. “We’ve been reviewed
by people from all over the
country, and the one thing
that always pops up in reviews
is, we are noted for
our blend, our balance, our
dynamic contrast and our
musicianship.”
This collection of
qualities is not the only
thing that makes the group
unique, however. The group
is made up of more than
100 members, ranging in
age from recent high school
graduates to those well into
their 80s.
“This is a group made up
of people who come from
all walks of life,” Day said.
“They share one thing in
common: the love of music
and a wonderful talent for
it.”
Throughout the past five
years, Day’s goal has been
to “channel this talent and
turn them from 108 individuals
into one voice.”
Some of the choir members,
such as Andrea
Thompson and Evelyn
“Evie” Goltz, have been
with the choir since day one
– 22 years ago, – while others
have joined as recently
as last year.
Goltz remembers more
than 70 people turning out
for the first practice.
“[We thought] this might
be a one time thing,” she
said. “The thing that was
so remarkable about this, it
was one little article in the
paper sponsored by the Mokena
Park District, and that
many people showed up,
so the next year we formed
a board… and we were off
and running.”
The group has been performing
concerts in the
spring and winter for most
of the 22 years, but their
upcoming performance at
Carnegie Hall will be a first.
“It’s going to be a great
experience for all of us,”
Thompson said.
Collin Mohney – who
hopes to pursue a career in
vocal performance – is one
of the youngest members of
the choir. He describes the
opportunity to perform at
Lincoln-Way Area Chorale member Michelle Newcomb
sings during a Nov. 7 rehearsal for the chorale’s Holiday
Memories concert at Lincoln-Way Central.
Accompanist Jason Randall plays piano during a rehearsal
for the Lincoln-Way Area Chorale’s Holiday Memories
concert.
Carnegie Hall as “surreal”
and said the chorale allows
people to live up to the potential
they have.
“There are people around
me that I’m learning from,”
he added. “There people
that are very, very good
in this choir. It’s probably
one of the best places to
extend the growth in my
singing right here in this
choir.”
Performing some of the
music from “Handel’s Messiah”
two years ago was
good groundwork for them
going into the performance
at Carnegie Hall, where
they will be singing part one
of the oratorio.
The Lincoln-Way Area
Chorale will be one of
two choirs performing for
the sold-out show in New
York the Sunday after
Thanksgiving, just one
week after their annual
Christmas concert.
During the Christmas concert,
they will be performing
four excerpts from Handel’s
“Messiah” as well as
Christmas favorites such as
“Carol of the Bells” and “O
Come, All Ye Faithful.” Vocal
Latte, a vocal jazz group
that will be doing a madrigal-style
performance, will
perform after the intermission.
Nate Jackson and some
of his guitar students from
Lincoln-Way Central will
Chorale, leads the chorale during a Nov. 7 rehearsal at
Julie McMann/22nd Century Media
Members of the Lincoln-Way Area Chorale sing during a
rehearsal for their Holiday Memories concert.
also be performing during
the second half of the concert.
Already looking forward
to their spring program,
which is scheduled for April
20, Day said it will be titled
“Swing, Swing, Swing”
and will consist of chorale
music during the first half
and big band swing during
the second half.

LW East student awarded scholarship for writing
Amanda Stoll, Assistant Editor
As a sophomore at Lincoln-Way
East High School,
Kate Wardenburg already
knew she wanted to attend
Washington University.
“I’ve loved Wash U.
for a long time,” Wardenburg
said. “Being here is a
dream come true, probably
even better than I’ve ever
thought.”
While her major is currently
undeclared, which is
common for freshmen at the
school, Wardenburg plans to
major in biology with a minor
in writing. She has many
interests and talents and is
still weighing the possibility
of adding a second major
or minor in either music or
film.
Her interest in writing led
her to apply for and receive
a $3,000 Howard Nemerov
Writing Scholarship this fall
as a freshman.
Washington University
has nearly 12,500 students
enrolled and awards only 10
Howard Nemerov scholarships
per year. According to
the university’s website, the
scholarships “are designed
for students with a true dedication
to writing and exceptional
writing talent.”
The scholarship is much
more than just a financial
achievement for Wardenburg,
who will be attending
weekly writing seminars
with the other scholarship
recipients. The scholarship
is renewable for four years,
which will give her the opportunity
to meet many visiting
writers, as well.
Although the scholarship
and writing seminars are
still new for her, Wardenburg
says she can tell she’s
already learning and branching
out with her writing.
She has recently been trying
to write poetry, something
she’s never really done until
now.
“One of my main goals is
to write things that matter
and are meaningful and important,”
Wardenburg said.
“I feel like that’s one of the
main reasons for writing, to
make something meaningful
that people can relate to.”
Wardenburg said her
classes in high school helped
develop her love for writing.
Her basic honors English
course with Richard Kolimas
during her junior year
helped to grow her love for
good writing.
During the class, Wardenburg
said she learned “the
qualities of good writing,
and [the class] exposed us to
really great poetry and arguments.
I learned a lot from
it, and I wanted to become a
better writer.”
She also spent time each
summer during high school
attending Interlochen Arts
Camp in Michigan. She took
a creative writing and story
structure program her first
summer, screen writing the
following two summers and
digital filmmaking her final
summer.
After graduation, Wardenburg
hopes to attend medical
school, but she wants to continue
writing.
“My main goal [in the
writing program] is to become
stronger as a writer,”
she said. “I want to keep it
in my life, because it’s one
of the things that I love to
do. I think this program will
help me find ways to do
that.”
At school, Wardenburg
stays busy with theater and
singing. She joined an a
cappella group called Mosaic
Whispers, and she preformed
in a production of
“Heathers” last weekend.
She played Heather Chandler,
one of the main characters
in the musical.
Wardenburg was involved
in a lot of theatrical productions
throughout middle and
high school, in addition to
being involved in madrigals,
choir, vocal jazz choir, and
honors and women’s choir.
She’s been home to Frankfort
twice since starting
school this fall, and she plans
to come home for Thanksgiving
to see her family; Her
parents are Ross and Julie,
and her younger siblings are
Sam and Gwen.
Andrew High School senior wins art scholarship
F. Amanda Tugade, Editor
Seventeen-year-old Samantha
Jankosky knows that
the key to having good sound
consists of adjusting the mic
levels, understanding how
sound travels through an auditorium
that seats hundreds
and conducting a series of
tests.
These technicalities are
crucial to a production, and
Jankosky, an Andrew High
School senior, has spent the
last few years learning the
tricks of the trade. In May of
2016, Jankosky was named a
recipient of the Palos Women’s
Fine Arts Scholarship.
The scholarship is sponsored
by the 2016 Palos Park
Women’s Club, and three
students from Consolidated
High School District 230
are selected. The two other
students awarded are Frank
Rodriguez from Stagg High
School and Amer Hasan
from Sandburg High School.
For Jankosky, the scholarship
gave her the opportunity
to attend a couple programs
throughout that summer.
One of the workshops was
held at the University of St.
Francis in Joliet.
“They taught me how to
use an editing design program
called ProTools, and
they taught me basically
how to play an instrument
within a week because I’ve
never played an instrument
before,” she recalled of her
lessons. “Learning sound is
kind of difficult for someone
who doesn’t sing or doesn’t
play an instrument; so, that
was a lot of fun.”
The other class focused
more on taking center stage
when it comes to giving direction
to others.
Jankosky said “Learning
to Lead,” a two-day camp at
Lewis University in Romeoville,
hosted several group
activities that allowed her
to branch out and enter her
senior year with a different
set of confidence, especially
since she is now the sound
chief, the stage manager and
the senior representative for
the drama club. To add, she
is also an officer for the National
Honor Society.
In October, Dolores
Barnes, who runs the scholarship
portion of the Palos
Park Women’s Club, invited
Jankosky, Rodriguez and
Hasan to attend a luncheon,
to meet other club members
and to present how they
have used their scholarships.
Barnes explained further
students are nominated by
their teachers for this scholarship,
and the committee
takes those recommendations
in consideration, and
Jankosky credits auditorium
director Lisa Gonwa.
Barnes shared Jankosky
was chosen because of her
drive, and her teacher wrote,
“she consistently strives for
excellence in her work,” her
go-getter attitude and her desire
to tell a complete story
with sound. And the purpose
of the scholarship is to help
students like Jankosky “further
their education in these
areas,” realize their potential
Andrew senior Samantha Jankosky (second from left)
stands with auditorium director Lisa Gonwa, her mother
Robyn and Dolores Barnes of the Palos Park Women’s
Club. Jankosky is the recipient of the 2016 Palos Women’s
Fine Arts Scholarship. Photo Submitted
and harness their passions,
she added.
When asked to reflect on
the luncheon, Jankosky admitted
she was nervous giving
that speech in front of
the women’s club.
“When I was up there, my
mouth was getting dry, but
apparently, they said I was
very enthusiastic, and they
can tell that I do theater,”
she joked. “It all went by so
fast.”
Three months into her senior
year, Jankosky said she
is excited to close out her
high school theater career
with taking part in as many
productions as possible.
“We just did a show called
‘Almost, Maine,’” she
shared. “That was my 12th
show, and we’re doing one
right now called, ‘You’re in
Town.’ And we’ll be doing
‘Hairspray’ in the spring. So,
I’m hoping to finish 15 by
the time I graduate.”
Like most high school students,
Jankosky is focused
on studying, applying to colleges
and planning for life
post-high school. While she
hasn’t officially settled on a
decision yet, she has considered
majoring in psychiatry
and minoring in theater.
“I love science and math,
and I love behind the scenes,
making the show happen and
making people happy.”

The Dish
Restaurant stations bring variety to Mariano’s
Max Lapthorne
Contributing Editor
Although Mariano’s in Orland
Park is best known for
its grocery selection, those
looking for a quick bite to
eat can take a quick left turn
after walking through the
doors to grab some sushi, a
Sicilian pizza or beef brisket
sandwich.
Mariano’s boasts roughly
a dozen food stations, where
patrons can stop to order a
meal. They include including
Oki Sushi, Todd’s BBQ, a pizza/sandwich
station, a hot bar,
a bakery, an oyster bar and a
deli. Diners also can supplement
their meal with a glass
of wine from the wine bar.
“We see ourselves as a
dining destination, whether
you’re grabbing lunch to go
or you’re going to sit here
and enjoy it or come here for
dinner,” said Amanda Puck,
director of strategic brand
development at Mariano’s.
One of the most popular
spots for patrons at Mariano’s
in Orland Park is Todd’s
BBQ, where chef Charlie
Cobbs smokes roughly eight
beef briskets per day to meet
the demands of customers.
On an average weekday,
Todd’s BBQ sells 50-60
smoked beef brisket sandwiches
($9), and that number
doubles on the weekend,
Cobbs said.
Each brisket is smoked
in-house for 12 hours at 200
degrees, and the sandwich is
served with a choice of Kansas
City extra rich, Texas
sweet heat or Carolina tangy
sauce.
The signature side dishes
for the smoked beef brisket
sandwich are braised greens
including kale, julienne carrots
and red wine vinegar
The caprese Napoletana pizza ($5.99) is another popular
offering at Mariano’s.
cooked at a low temperature
for 2-3 hours for texture; and
Todd’s baked beans, which
feature calico beans, pinto
beans, brisket burnt ends,
pimentos, molasses, brown
sugar and a hint of paprika.
“The beans got so popular
[when] we were doing them
here at Todd’s that they now
carry them at the deli section,
as well,” Cobbs said.
Customers have started
buying the beans by the gallon
since they have become
available at the deli, Cobbs
added. He also said the
pulled pork sandwich has
drawn positive reviews from
customers.
“It’s like the brisket, but
it’s tender. ... You’ve got the
sweet, the fat and you’ve got
the smokiness of the bark all
mixed in together,” Cobbs
said. “People really love that
on the sandwich.”
An option at Mariano’s
other than the smoky barbecue
items at Todd’s include
a $10 sushi lunch combo at
Oki Sushi that comes with a
choice of spicy salmon rolls,
negihama rolls or California
rolls. It also features a small
seaweed salad and miso
soup.
Having sushi, barbecue
and pizza stations all right
next to each other makes
Mariano’s a dynamic location
for customers who either
are not sure what they
would like to eat or who
want to pick up food for the
whole family.
That is a goal, according
to Puck.
“We love to offer our customers
a variety, in general, so
when you go to our produce
department, you’re not going
to find 10 apples; you’ll find
20,” Puck said. “When you
come to our restaurant side,
you’ll find dozens of options
that you can choose from.”
The idea of providing customers
with a full-fledged
eating experience is something
that was part of the
The most popular item at Todd’s BBQ in Mariano’s in Orland Park is the smoked beef
brisket sandwich ($9), which often is served with baked beans ($3) and braised greens
($3). Photos by Max Lapthorne/22nd Century Media
plans for all Mariano’s since
the first location opened in
Arlington Heights in 2010,
Puck said.
“Bob Mariano really had
a vision for the stores to be
part of a lifestyle,” she said.
Mariano’s focusing its
attention on its restaurant
offerings has gone well, especially
at its Orland Park
location.
“We’ve grown this part of
our business as an area of focus,
because our customers
really have been responsive
to it,” Puck said. “We’re really
built on that premise of
convenience but also really
a great commitment to culinary
offerings.”
Customers can expect the
current food stations to remain
intact in the future, but
Mariano’s intends to explore
ways to improve its culinary
experiences.
“We keep changing and
evolving and growing and
getting inspired,” Puck said.
“We’re always evolving the
stations. So, maybe our next
Mariano’s when you come in
will have something new.”
Note: Mariano’s also has a
location in Frankfort, but food
options vary by location.
Brian Rady is a junior at
Tinley Park High School
and is the current top
bowler with a 195 average.
How did you get started
in bowling?
I started when I was really
little, probably like 6 years
old. I kind of grew up with
it, my brother would take me
bowling a lot.
What do you love about
the game?
First off I love it because
I’m really good at it. It’s really
calming, and kind of fun. It’s
a great way to pass the time.
What’s the most
challenging part of the
game?
Sometimes it’s figuring
out a different oil pattern,
and staying consistent with
my release, form, and how
you throw the ball is pretty
hard too.
Who is your favorite
professional bowler, and
why?
Wes Mollot, my coach
always talks about him, and
how perfect his release is.
I want to be like that. Me
and him have the same kind
of style. We have the same
form and same release.
What’s your favorite
after school snack?
Pretty much pizza or
chicken, I don’t eat a lot.
If you could be any
superhero, who would
you choose?
Batman. He’s just my favorite
superhero, he’s really
cool. He doesn’t have any
powers, and does it all on his
own.
If you won $1 million,
what would be the first
thing you would buy?
I’d probably buy a nice
house or nice car.
What’s a goal for your
future?
I would really like to travel
Photo Submitted
to different places around the
world. South America would
be nice. I’ve been learning a
lot about some countries in
South America in my Spanish
class, and it looks nice
and beautiful to go visit.
Who’s your biggest role
model?
I’d have to say my bowling
coach Ron Armour. He
taught me everything in
bowling; he taught me everything
from my approach
and throwing the ball. He
teaches me so life lessons
too. He’s just a great guy.
Who are your favorite
bands or artists right
now?
I like the kind of rap style
like Lil Durk, Eminem and
Lil Bibby.
Boys bowling
Lincoln-Way East checked by Sandburg in first season loss
Frank Gogola
Freelance Reporter
Lincoln-Way East boys
bowling dropped its first
conference match in its
toughest challenge of the
young season.
The Griffins lost 1,999 to
1,846 to Sandburg on Nov.
17 at Orland Bowl as the
Eagles remained undefeated
in their quest for a return trip
to state. For East (2-2), the
loss was a reality check after
it knocked off Andrew and
Lockport.
“We’ve had a few early
tests, and it’s kind of given
us an idea to get to that next
level and have a state-bound
team that what we need is
we need five guys to score,”
East coach Mike Foster said.
“We have a relatively young
team, even with four seniors
on the team, so there’ll be
that learning curve.”
East came up short in both
games and lost by 153 pins.
It lost 1,025 to 972 in the
first set and 974 to 874 in the
second set.
Sandburg rolled 55 strikes
to East’s 41. The Eagles
picked up 77.8 percent (42
of 54) of their spares, while
the Griffins picked up 73.4
percent (47 of 64).
Foster said East struggled
making adjustments to the
lane’s oil pattern based on
ball type, lining up, or the
speed and curve of the ball.
The Griffins entered the
Sandburg match coming
off wins over SouthWest
Suburban Conference foes
Andrew and Lockport, both
state qualifiers last season,
after they dropped their season
opener to Joliet West.
Andrew finished eighth at
state and returned one starter,
while Lockport finished
tied for fourth and returned
two starters.
“This is a strong win for
us,” Sandburg sophomore
Cameron Crowe said. “Lincoln-Way
East is a solid
team. We know they beat
Lockport, and Lockport is
always a strong team.”
Sandburg (4-0) was a
different type of challenge
for East because it was almost
as deep as last season.
Crowe, an individual conference,
regional and sectional
champion, and senior Tommy
Hayes were starters on
last season’s team that finished
sixth at state. Seniors
Brandon Goeringer and AJ
Svatos were alternates on
that team, while the fifth
starter, junior Alex Zylo, averaged
about 200 pins last
year. Crowe, Hayes and Goeringer
came into the East
match averaging more than
215 pins per game.
Junior Colton Marks
bowled a team-high 435 pins
for the Griffins. His 233 pins
in the first set of 10 frames
and 202 in the second set
were the two highest games
by an East bowler. His 11
strikes were a team high.
The Griffins got 389 pins
(193, 196) from senior Justin
Lavin, 361 (201, 160) from
sophomore DJ Armbrecht
and 338 (177, 161) from
senior Spencer Hein. Senior
Jason Demma bowled a 168
in the first game and was replaced
by junior Julian Banzon,
who bowled a 155 in
the second game.
Sandburg was led by
Crowe’s 442 pins (225,
217). Hayes was the only
other Eagle to go over 400
combined pins with a 410.
Hayes bowled a team-high
229 in the second game after
closing his first game (181)
with three strikes in the 10th
frame.
Sandburg got 389 pins
(225, 164) from Zylo, 381
(212, 169) from Svatos and
377 (190, 187) from Goeringer.
Crowe called the win a
“grind-it-out game” for a
team that’s taking it one
game at a time but is focusing
on making it back to
state with the goal of a topthree
finish.
“Sandburg’s a great team,”
Foster said. “Up and done
their lineup, they have some
great bowlers. A good, early
test. Throughout our conference
we’ll see some good
teams, so all season long it’ll
be a test for us.”
Tinley Park Village officials honor local youth football team
Brittany Kapa, Assistant Editor
It’s not a story you hear
often: football players going
12-0 to win the Super Bowl.
What’s more unheard of is
going on a two-year stint
winning two Super Bowls
and 24 games collectively.
The Tinley Park Bulldogs
junior varsity white squad
did just that Nov. 6 against
the Orland Park Pioneers to
take home the 2016 River
Valley Youth Football championship
title. Tinley Park
Village Board members honored
the team for their accomplishments
at their Nov.
15 regular meeting held at
Village Hall.
At the meeting, Trustee
Brian Younker ushered the
boys into the room. Younker,
a former Bulldogs coach,
took a moment to recognize
the team’s feat. The
32-member team consists
of boys ranging from 11 to
13 years old, and altogether,
they entered the room with
their heads held high. Some
of them could not contain
their excitement and hand
smiles on their faces.
“This team allowed the
fewest points of any team at
all four levels, which consisted
of 78 teams in the
River Valley football conference,”
Younker said, noting
the team only allowed 28
points against them in the
entire season.
“It’s great to see you guys
be successful, because as
I understand it, this is the
second year for some of you
in an undefeated status,”
Mayor Seaman added. “That
deserves a lot of recognition,
but what also deserved
recognition is the effort that
you all put in to getting it
right, and doing a team job
together.”
Eleven of the 32 boys had
been a part of the Bulldogs
team last year, who won
the 2015 lightweight Super
Bowl championship.
Head coach Ken Anderson
and offensive coordinator
Eric Tanquilut shared in
their boys’ excitement and
said credit their season’s
success to their players’ hard
work, dedication and overall
trust in each other.
The fact that the boys
knew each other so well before
the season even started
seemed to make all the difference
in Tanquilut’s mind,
whose sons are also on the
team.
“The core of our players
have been playing together
since they were 7 years old,”
Tanquilut said. “The familiarity
with the coaching staff
... helped a ton. There wasn’t
a lot of learning on the field
as we went into camp. When
you’re out there not thinking
anymore and just doing, it
puts you at a head start and
at an advantage when you
get into the season.”
Anderson, a Frankfort resident,
has been coaching the
Bulldogs for 12 years, and
he is not only proud of what
his team accomplished but
expressed he was glad they
got more out of the season
than just a championship.
“It’s not just winning and
losing or playing a game, but
it’s the life lessons that you
take from it,” Anderson said.
“Our motto is ‘hard work
pays off,’ and at the end of
the day, our hard work led to
an undefeated championship
season.”
Tanquilut’s sons, Jake, 13,
and Josh, 11, were both on
the team this year. Josh, having
more maturity than his
years would suggest, recognized
the importance of the
2016 season, especially for
his older brother.
“Every single game I think
that it’s bigger for Jake than
it was for me,” Josh said.
The team’s final victory
wouldn’t come easy, and it
proved to be a good lesson
for those 32 boys. The Orland
Park Pioneers scored
on the Bulldogs just two
minutes into the game, and
the Bulldogs would fight the
entire game to get the score
tied up. The game ultimately
would go into overtime.
Tied 14-14, the Bulldogs
knew it was a now or never
type of situation. Jake would
ultimately run the ball in for
the final touchdown, just
three plays into overtime.
The Pioneers would also
get a chance to come back,
but the Bulldog’s defensive
lineup proved to be too
much. Fans rushed the field,
and both the coaches and
players alike couldn’t believe
they had just won their
division Super Bowl.
“I remember watching
that last play in overtime,
and I couldn’t embrace the
feeling that we could actually
win this,” Jake said.
“When I found out we won,
I just went nuts.”
Anderson gave 11-yearold
Kyle Thomas – a firsttime
junior varsity quarterback
– credit where it was
due, as he was impressed at
how he handled himself on
the field and his level of talent.
“We had a really hard
working group of kids, they
played hard for each other,
and they were very unselfish,”
Anderson said. “When
you have that combination,
you’re going to be successful.”
Anderson and Tanquilut
noted that they wanted to
stress the importance of
not only how hard the team
worked all season long, but
what they boys get out of
that kind of experience.
“Teamwork, taking responsibility
for one another,
and knowing that even if
you’re not the breakout start
of the game you’ve contributed
to the team’s overall
success,” Tanquilut said.

T-Bolts turn growing pains into a positive jive
Ryan Esguerra
Freelance Reporter
“Learn how to be better
each and every game.”
That was the mantra
Bobby Matz, head coach of
the Andrew girls basketball
team, instilled in his team
coming into their crossconference
game against
the Crete-Monee Warriors
on Nov. 15 held at Andrew’s
court.
The Thunderbolts (0-
1, 0-0) came into the new
season looking to improve
on their record from last
year – a record that ranked
them near the bottom of
the Southwest Suburban
Conference. Although the
Warriors (1-0, 0-0) were able
to walk away with a 45-32
victory, Matz said his young
team is well on its way to
realizing its potential and
continuing to work out a lot
of their nerves.
“It looked like a first
game of the season,” Matz
said of the season opener.
“We dug ourselves into a
hole by being soft and nervous
with the basketball, in
the first half especially. It’s
a game you hate to lose, but
it’s a game you learn from.
“Kudos to Crete-
Monee. They pressured us
while worked their post
player into the game; that
beat us.”
The Warriors jumped out
of the opening tip to an 11-3
lead behind an aggressive
defense and superior post
play. A pair of 3-pointers
right before the end of the
first by Andrew junior Kayla
Langowski cut the lead
down to 11-9 going into the
second.
That lead ballooned for
the Warriors in the second.
A stifling three-quarter
court press disrupted the
Thunderbolts’ offense and
held them to only three
points on the quarter. Both
teams went off to the locker
rooms, and the Warriors
were in the lead, 19-12.
“We looked a little intimidated
by their aggressiveness
in the first half,” Matz
said. “We had to go out and
match their intensity if we
wanted to stay in it.”
The beginning of the
second half started strong
for the Thunderbolts. They
opened up the third quarter
with a 6-2 run that would
put them within three
points. It was then that the
Warriors would go on to
a run of their own to open
the lead back up to eight to
close out the third.
For the remainder of the
fourth quarter, the Thunderbolts
would not come near
the eight-point lead. The
Warriors’ Sharmarne Hale
led her team to victory, finishing
the game with a team
high 14 points.
“I thought we settled in
during the second half,”
Matz said. “We got some
turnovers, made a few good
baskets, and I think that
gave the girls some confidence.
What hurt us, however,
was that we just ran
out of energy.
“Just when we were about
to take the lead, we would
lose a couple possessions
and be down by eight again.
That’s a lot to overcome.”
Langowski led the Thunderbolts
with team-high 14
points, and sophomore Andrianna
Sanchez registered
8 points.
The 2015 campaign was a
down one for the Thunderbolts;
last year, the team only
claimed five wins in the season.
This year – and with the
return of five players – Matz
Andrew’s Kayla Langowski tries to navigate through two
defenders in the Nov. 15 game against Crete-Monee.
said he expects his team to
improve as they continue to
compete and gain game experience
as a team.
“When things are up
against you, successful
teams come together to support
each other,” Matz said.
“There are a lot of little
things in basketball that
simply have to be learned
by playing. I think our girls
will get to that point as we
go on here.”
Despite the first loss, the
season has just begun. A
sight of optimism follows
the young, budding and
growing Thunderbolts
team, which competed in
the Lincoln-Way Central
Invitational tournament,
which began Friday, Nov.
18.
“We already challenged
our girls to win 10 more
games than we did last
year,” Matz said. “This
is a new year and a new
group of kids who have a
completely different set of
strengths. There is no reason
we shouldn’t get after
15 wins this year.”

Girls Basketball
Titans unable to box out Stagg in first game
Frank Gogola
Freelance Reporter
Dec. 3 was a low point
for Tinley Park girls basketball
last year. The Titans
allowed a season-high 96
points in a 66-point loss
to Argo. They’re hoping
not to see such a lopsided
outcome this season. Tinley
Park plans to do so by
relying on a renewed defensive
effort early in the
season since the offense is
a work in progress, as evidenced
by the 53-28 seasonopening
loss to Stagg on
Nov. 14.
“Our short-term goal is
to keep teams under 50
points,” Tinley Park coach
Michelle Beary said. “We
generally don’t have a consistent,
well-rounded group
of shooters. So, we push for
our defense to keep teams
under 50 points just to keep
it within a competitive
point. Fifty-three is not a
horrible place to start.”
The Titans never led
against Stagg, trailing 5-0
and getting as close as a
7-7 tie. They held Stagg to
a fewer number of points
each quarter: 17 in the first,
15 in the second, 12 in the
third and 9 in the fourth.
Tinley Park shot 11-of-36
(30.6 percent) from the field
with 23 of their 28 points
coming from the starters.
The team has been implementing
a new offense and
hasn’t spent as much time
shooting in practice as
Beary would’ve liked.
The Titans struggled
against Stagg’s full-court
press and lost the rebounding
battle.
“I learned we have a lot
of work to do still,” Beary
said. “We still go into panic
mode. We still revert back
into some bad habits. While
we can verbally say where
we need to be and where we
want to be, physically doing
it against pressure is what
we have to prove.”
The Titans are coming off
a 4-25 season with a regional
quarterfinal defeat. They
lost four seniors, including
starter Rebecca Bragg (7.7
points and 4.5 rebounds per
game, both team highs),
from a team that averaged
36.5 points per game.
They bring back three
players who started all 29
games last season. Junior
Vejune Sidaugaite (9 points
vs. Stagg) leads all returners
in points (7.7), rebounds
(3.9) and assists (1.6) per
game.
Senior Bess Deltgen (3
points) led the team with
23 steals and was second
with 29 assists. Junior Lottie
Deltgen averaged 3.3
points. Sophomores Sam
Tuuk (8 points) and Kayla
Serafini (3 points) rounded
out the starting five.
Tuuk shot a team-high
29.1 percent from the
3-point line in 26 games,
and her 4.5 points per game
is second among returners.
Serafini played on the freshman
team last year.
“I foresee them being the
same starting five,” Beary
said. “But, every day we tell
the girls it’s a new competitive
day and it’s anyone’s
position. We’re looking for
girls to step up all over the
place. Those five are our
most consistent daily in
practice.”
Sophomore Praise Wright
(2 points) and senior Gianna
Politano came off the bench
on varsity last year. Wright
and Politano averaged 1.8
and 1.2 points per game, respectively.
Senior Madison Kirsch
returns to the Titans after
taking the past year off. She
last played on junior varsity
as a sophomore.
Juniors Kamya Moultry
(3 points), Kassidy
VanMerkestyn, Destiny
Wright, Hanah Remes, Piper
Jones and Allison Mayer
played on junior varsity last
year.
Mayer was out with a
concussion and didn’t play
against Stagg. Beary expects
her back in early December,
with the offense
and defense having taken
steps forward by then.
“A lot of our goals are
skill-based not recordbased:
being able to score
more points, being able
to hold teams under 50,”
Beary said. “A lot of teams
crushed us last year, putting
up 60, 70 points. They
recognize that when we put
all those bigger concepts together
the wins will come.”
Championship last weekend.
The two-day competition
– which was held Nov.
18 and Nov. 19 at Evanston
Township High School –
brought on a surge of celebration
for Ruchala who
closed out her high school
diving career.
The 17-year-old Tinley
Park resident placed fourth
overall on the first day of
the diving event; her score
boasted a 308.60.
“I’m pretty happy with
how I dove,” Ruchala said,
reflecting on her performance.
“I wish I would have
done [better] by eighth dive
better, but overall, I’ve been
doing well. My legs could
have been tighter, and I need
to get my somersault going a
little more.”
Ruchala’s happy disposition
didn’t seem to waiver,
even after Saturday’s finish.
Ruchala fell just short of her
goal to win the state championship
during her final year
at Andrew. She finished fifth
with a total score of 437.80.
Jessie Creed, sophomore our
of New Trier, ended up taking
the top honor with a total
school of 462.55.
“It was an awesome career
and I had a lot of success,”
Ruchala said Saturday after
it was all over. “I’m so happy
with how everything turned
out, but I have to thank my
family for all of its support
throughout the years.”
A quick recap
The rest of the Friday and
Saturday event brought happiness,
disappointment and
heartbreak for its competitors,
including Lincoln-Way
Township High School and
Sandburg High School.
Lincoln-Way East were
disqualified in the opening
200-yard medley relay
on Friday but later rose to
the challenge, advancing
Makayla Varga to Saturday’s
final 100-yard butterfly
event. Varga came in 11th
place in the consolation race.
Teammate Michaela Mitchell
also came in 11th in same
event.
Lockport freshman Lindsey
Merk was tied for 15th
place in the 100-yard backstroke
event and missed
the opportunity to advance
to Saturday’s event. Merk
moved forward to the championship
race for the 100-
yard butterfly and scored
third.
Lincoln-Way West’s Caitlyn
Schreiber placed in two
championship races and
took 12th in the 100-yard
freestyle; she earned fifth
win in the 50-yard freestyle.
