November 2016
Dear Friends,
It’s that time again when we reflect on our
accomplishments over the past year and highlight the
many ways in which we have advanced our Jewish
Community Center’s mission. As the nucleus of the
Syracuse Jewish community, the JCC often transcends its
mission by becoming a necessity in the lives of many in
our community.
This past year we continued to support hundreds of
local working families with quality childcare through
our Early Childhood
Development Program and
After School Program. At
the other end of the age
spectrum, our support
of area seniors remains stronger than ever. Our hot,
nutritious and delicious senior kosher meals served up
five days a week have developed quite a following. The
JCC’s Neighborhood Advisor Program continues to grow
and help more seniors remain living independently in
the community. This year also was a milestone for our
Family Sports & Fitness Center as we renovated many
areas of our facility and replaced nearly all of our exercise
equipment.
How wonderful it is that nobody need
wait a single moment before starting to
improve the world.
– Anne Frank
We’ve been able to achieve all of these things—and
more—thanks to the wonderful support from our
community, and the many dedicated members and
I care about the Sam Pomeranz Jewish Community Center of Syracuse and its future. I also identify with and understand
the importance of the JCC to Jewish life in this community. I would like to make the following contribution*:
q Pillar $1,000
q Founder $500
q Supporter $250
q Patron $100
donors like you. As we once again kick off another endof-year
campaign, we ask that you help us further our
mission of providing quality programs and services
rooted in Judaic traditions and teachings. Please
remember that when you give to the JCC, you provide
a gift that lasts throughout the year. Your generous
donation will positively impact the lives of many Central
New Yorkers, while also helping the JCC to maintain its
key role in our community.
As we close out another successful year, help us continue
our long tradition of serving the diverse needs of our
friends and neighbors. Please make a tax-deductible
contribution to the JCC today. Your end-of-year gift
will help ensure that our essential programming and
services continue moving forward throughout the
coming year.
Supporting Your Center
Your continued financial
contributions, gifts, grants and
endowments allow us to serve
you, your family and the larger
community six days per week,
year round. Funds raised are
critical to daily operations, special
programming, future development
and improvements, and
scholarships and financial aid.
Matching gifts
Many companies in the Syracuse area have
matching gift programs, which encourage
charitable giving by their employees.
Under these programs, companies match
gifts—often dollar for dollar or even two
dollars to one—that individuals make to
nonprofit, tax-exempt organizations. Your
gift to the JCC may qualify. Please check
with your company to determine eligibility
requirements.
Tribute cards
To commemorate special occasions,
including births, birthdays, graduations,
anniversaries, marriages, Bar or Bat
Mitzvah, or to celebrate and honor the
memory of a loved one, the JCC welcomes
tax-deductible gifts to one of our many
endowment or special funds. (See the
tributes on page 34.) The JCC will
send an acknowledgement card to the
individual (or next of kin) in whose name
the contribution is made. Tribute cards
recognize someone special and help the
JCC. For more information, contact Erin
Hart at 315-445-2040, ext. 112.
End-of-Year Donation
Designate your United Way
donation to support the JCC
If you participate in the United Way
Community Campaign where you work
or as an individual donor, please consider
designating all or part of your gift to the
JCC of Syracuse. This can easily be done
on the back of your pledge card. Your
generous contribution to the JCC through
the United Way donor program will go a
long way in supporting your JCC.
Volunteer
An agency such as the JCC is dependent
on the enthusiasm and willingness of
members of the community who volunteer
their time and talent. Volunteers are
invaluable in bringing vital perspective,
experience, community and manpower to
complement those of our staff members.
Public support is imperative to the JCC of Syracuse’s survival. The center depends
on these donations for a full 7% of its annual budget. We recently mailed out
our end-of-year campaign letters
requesting your generous support.
For your convenience, a copy of this
letter is reprinted on page 3 along
with the form to use for making a taxdeductible
end-of-year contribution if
you haven’t already done so. No gift
is too small and all donations to the
JCC are greatly appreciated!
Senior Adult Dining Program
Our Bobbi Epstein Lewis Senior Adult
Dining Program (see page 22) offers
seniors a hot, nutritious kosher meal
five days a week at a very affordable
price. It’s our way of “giving back” to
local seniors who form the foundation
of our community. You can help
keep this valuable program going by
making a contribution or becoming a
sponsor of our monthly senior newsletter.
For more information, contact
Erin Hart at 315-445-2040, ext. 112.
Jewish Federation of CNY
The JCC of Syracuse is a beneficiary
agency of the Jewish Federation of
Central New York. The JCC receives
funding from the Federation and
works in close partnership with it to
provide the Jewish community with
essential programs and services.
JCC families and members can help
by giving generously to the Jewish
Federation of CNY campaign.
Free JCC teen daytrip December 11
Local teenagers looking to explore and
celebrate their Jewish heritage will have
an opportunity to do just that during
an upcoming road trip to Philadelphia.
The Sam Pomeranz Jewish Community
Center of Syracuse, in collaboration with
area synagogues, will host a “JCC Teen
Initiative” excursion for students in grades
8-12 to the National Museum of American
Jewish History on Sunday, Dec. 11, 2016.
The bus will depart at 8 a.m. from the JCC
of Syracuse and return to the JCC around
10:30 p.m.
This free outing includes roundtrip
travel, museum admission, a guided tour
and a kosher lunch and dinner. There are
only 35 spots available on a first come,
first served basis. The registration form is
available from the JCC by calling 315-445-
2360 or visiting www.jccsyr.org. The “JCC
Teen Initiative” daytrip is sponsored by the
Joseph Elman Family Fund for Holocaust
Studies at the Jewish Community
Foundation of Central New York.
“We are very excited to coordinate
this trip and give local teens a chance
to connect with the history of Jews in
America,” said Marci Erlebacher, JCC
PJ LIBRARY IN CNY – A JEWISH COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP
of Syracuse executive director. “With
so much to do and see at the museum,
this is a wonderful opportunity for our
young people to appreciate who they are
and discover their place in the Jewish-
American experience.”
Leading the “JCC Teen Initiative”
excursion and traveling with the teens
will be the JCC’s Mick Hagan, director
of children and teen services. Hagan
heads up a number of JCC teen programs
throughout the year, including summer
camps and the annual high school Battle of
the Bands held each January.
The National Museum of American
Jewish History, located on Independence
Mall in Philadelphia, Pa., was established
in 1976 and is the only museum in the
nation dedicated exclusively to exploring
and interpreting the American Jewish
experience. With more than 25,000 objects,
the museum is the repository of the largest
collection of Jewish Americana in the
world.
Set aside
the status quo
and grow
By Rabbi Evan Shore
Many associate Chanukah with the
miracle of olive oil, potato latkes and
dreidels. However there is a philosophical
dimension as well. This idea may be found
in the manner that the Chanukah lights are
lit each night.
On the first night of Chanukah we begin
with one candle and add another each
successive night. On the last night of
Chanukah, eight candles are lit. This
process is described in the Talmud as
maalin meen hakodesh vein moreedein,
we strive to ascend in holiness and not
descend.
This idea is very important in our daily
lives. Additionally, it is an important
teaching tool for our children. In general,
Judaism frowns upon the status quo. In
our lives, we are expected to grow in
some way every day. Some growth may
be remarkable while at times in very small
increments.
Our job is to look at ourselves daily
and attempt to build upon our past
experiences and forge ahead with a
clear resolve to continue growing. This
growth may be in many forms, religious
observance, family relationships, character
building, maturation and the list goes on.
This year when we see the glow of the
candles each night of Chanukah may they
be a source of inspiration and motivation
to all of us that each day brings the chance
to make ourselves a little better, kinder
and closer to our Jewish roots.
programs and events. PJ Library in CNY is a
HOW YOUNG CHILDREN LEARN
Much of what children learn and do in
an early childhood program doesn’t come
home in a backpack. Young children
learn best through hands-on and direct
interactive experiences. This type of
learning happens through play and
exploration.
The Jerome and Phyllis Charney Early
Childhood Develop Program uses the
Creative Curriculum paired with the NYS
Early Learning Guidelines, using a Reggio
Emilia inspired approach to learning.
The Reggio Emilia Approach is an
innovative and inspiring approach to
early childhood education which values
the child as strong, capable, resilient and
rich with wonder and knowledge. Every
child brings with them deep curiosity and
potential and this innate curiosity drives
their interest to understand their world
and their place within it. These are the
guiding principles that we stand by when
educating children:
Children are capable of
constructing their own learning
They are driven by their interests to
understand and know more.
Children form an understanding of
themselves and their place in the
world through their interactions
with others
There is a strong focus on social
collaboration, working in groups, where
each child is an equal participant, having
their thoughts and questions valued.
The adult is not the giver of knowledge.
Children search out the knowledge
through their own investigations.
Children are communicators
Children are encouraged to use language
to investigate, explore and reflect on their
experiences. They are listened to with
respect, believing that their questions and
observations are an opportunity to learn
and search together. It is a continual and
collaborative process. Rather than the child
asking questions and the adult answering,
the search is undertaken together.
The environment is the third
teacher
The environment is recognized for
its potential to inspire children. An
environment filled with natural light, order
and beauty. Open spaces free from clutter,
where every material is considered for its
purpose, every corner is ever-evolving to
encourage children to delve deeper and
deeper into their interests.
The space encourages collaboration,
communication and exploration. The space
respects children as capable by providing
them with authentic materials & tools. The
space is cared for by the children and the
adults.
The adult is a mentor and guide
Our role as adults is to observe (our)
children, listen to their questions and their
stories, find what interests them and then
provide them with opportunities to explore
these interests further.
The Hundred Languages of
Children
Probably the most well-known aspect of
the Reggio Emilia Approach is the belief
that children use many, many different
ways to show their understanding and
express their thoughts and creativity.
There are one hundred different ways
of thinking, of discovering, of learning.
Through drawing and sculpting, through
dance and movement, through painting
and pretend play, through modeling and
music, and that each one of these Hundred
Languages must be valued and nurtured.
The Reggio Emilia Approach
emphasizes hands-on discovery learning
that allows the child to use all their senses
and all their languages to learn.
The NYS Early Learning Guidelines
focuses on all areas of development
for children birth to five years old.
The guidelines provide teachers and
families with an understanding of child
development and where children are on the
developmental continuum. There are five
domains in the guidelines: Physical wellbeing,
health, and motor development;
social and emotional development;
approaches to learning; cognition and
general knowledge; and language,
communication and literacy.
HAPPY CHANUKAH
December brings with it Chanukah, the
“Festival of Lights,” and our classroom
Chanukah parties that have become a
favorite ECDP tradition! Our Chanukah
parties will be held on Friday, Dec. 23 for
rooms 6, 7, 8, A, B and 2. The boys and
girls will be eating potato lakes and jelly
doughnuts. Songs will be sung, dreidels
will be spun, candles on the menorah will
be lit and stories of brave Maccabees told.
Each child will also receive a specially
decorated goodie bag filled with a dreidel,
Chanukah stickers and chocolate gelt to
take home.
If your child will not be scheduled to
attend our program on Dec. 23 for the
Chanukah Party, you may pay for extra
time if space is available. Otherwise,
parents may bring in their child and
STAY WITH THEM for the duration
of the party. NYS licensing regulations
requires a specific student/teacher ratio be
maintained at all times in every classroom.
Ratios vary according to age. Thank you
for your understanding and cooperation
with this matter.
PJ LIBRARY
The JCC has partnered with the PJ Library
(PJ for pajamas) which visits our program
monthly. Children are encouraged to wear
their pajamas to school on PJ Library days!
The PJ Library coordinator reads stories,
sings songs and plans activities with the
children. The program offers free, highquality
Jewish books and music each
month to children ages six months to eight
years all across North America to parents
raising Jewish children.
WINTER VACATION CAMP
The Early Childhood Development
Program will be closed for winter break
Dec. 26–30. There will be a vacation camp
offered for our working parents who need
extended-day and full-day child care Dec.
26–30. The teachers who will be caring
for children that week may NOT be your
child’s regular teachers.
The winter vacation camp is subject to
minimum enrollment. The fee is $50 per
day. Please look for the registration form
in your child’s mailbox. We cannot accept
registration forms after Dec. 9 due to staff
PRESCHOOL BOOK FAIR
You’re invited! We look forward to seeing
you at our annual Scholastic Preschool
Book Fair which will be held Jan. 9–20
Childhood wing of the JCC.
Our book fair is the perfect way to
update your home library at half the cost!
Many of our parents love to purchase
books for their child’s classroom. To make
this easier for you, please look for the
specially marked book bins at the checkout
which contains the wish list of books
for classroom libraries. Your child will
be able to place a special sticker inside
the book that lets the teacher know who
purchased it for the classroom. Please note
that purchasing a book from the wish bin
is optional and not required. The Early
Childhood Development Program greatly
appreciates all wish bin books that are
purchased.
PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES
Communication between parents and
teachers is an important part of our
program. During the school year teachers
are making observations and documenting
learning to guide instruction and promote
success in all areas of development. We
look forward to sharing it with you during
the parent-teacher conferences that will
be held Jan. 9–20. Please look for the
While the word “draft” can be used in
relation to a poorly insulated home or
most people associated the word draft
with compulsory military service. Well,
this is the “draft” that will be the focus
Manlius, N.Y. resident Mel Rubenstein.
War, a presentation by Mel and Mady
Rubenstein, will be given on Sunday, Dec. 4
at 1 p.m. at the JCC of Syracuse. The
event is free and open to the public. Light
refreshments will be served.
Rubenstein’s book, The Peacetime
Draft During the Cold War (2009), is a
compilation of contributed stories by local
men about their military service during the
period between the Korean and Vietnam
wars. The Dec. 4 presentation will delve
into many of the book’s stories with many
historical photos of the time. Also, several
Plant a tree in Israel or elsewhere worldwide—no travel required
315-445-2360 | www.jccsyr.org
If you’ve ever wanted to make our world a
little greener—whether right here in New
York or in a desert region such as Israel—
the Sam Pomeranz Jewish Community
Center of Syracuse can help. And, you
don’t have to travel far to make it happen.
The JCC of Syracuse recently kicked off
a fundraiser to have trees planted here in
the United States and at various locations
around the world such as Israel, Africa
and Asia. Those looking to support this
initiative may purchase a “Plant a Tree”
card from the JCC. Then simply go online
according to the instructions on the card
to have a tree planted at one of more than
35 reforestation sites around the world.
Each card costs $18 or you can buy five and
get one free.
“Plant a Tree” cards may be purchased
over the phone or in person from the
JCC’s main entrance receptionist, Jerome
and Phyllis Charney Early Childhood
Development Program or Neulander
Family Sports & Fitness Center. Donors
may choose to have their tree planting
donation benefit the JCC’s After
School Program, Early Childhood
Development Program, Sports &
Fitness Center, PJ Library in CNY or
Seniors Department. Tree donations
also may be designated as a tribute in
honor or memory of someone special.
“We’re really pleased to be rolling
out this type of fundraiser,” said JCC
of Syracuse Executive Director Marci
Erlebacher. It’s a first for us and a
great way for our supporters to help
out their chosen JCC program while
making a positive impact on the
environment.”
As a dry desert region, Israel has
limited trees and no natural forests.
Thus all forests must be handplanted,
which Israel has done quite
successfully. In less than 60 years Israel
has become one of only two countries
with a net gain in its number of trees.
