Directors Report The Centre for Advanced Macromolecular Design (CAMD) focuses on the synthesis of polymers for advanced applications. This broad research field encompasses the development of new polymerization techniques to create polymers/polymeric nano-objects for applications mainly in the areas of advanced materials, health and energy/environment. The year 2015 was another successful year for CAMD in terms of research output. The centre has been highly productive, publishing 56 papers or book chapters in leading international journals, including high impact publications such as papers in Chemical Reviews and JACS. CAMD also hosted numerous visitors throughout the year, including several internationally renowned researchers who gave presentations as part of the CAMD lecture program. Strong international links are also reflected in a range of publications with collaborators from around the world. CAMD researchers were active in attending conferences and giving seminars, including a one day workshop entitled Polymer Research in NWS Symposium organized by CAMD researchers at UNSW in November 2015. The year 2014 witnessed significant change in terms of personnel. Dr Stuart Thickett took up a position at the University of Tasmania. Dr Peter Roth left CAMD for a position at the University of Surrey in the UK. Our longstanding Centre Manager, Dr Istvan Jacenyik, accepted a position at Macquarie University. We thank them for their hard work at CAMD and wish all of them well in their future endeavours. Several new staff also joined CAMD – Dr Damia Mawad was appointed Lecturer at the School of Materials Science and Engineering (Faculty of Science) at UNSW, and joined CAMD shortly thereafter. Her research is mainly concerned with polymeric biomaterials applied in tissue engineering and drug delivery. Dr Robert Chapman arrived at CAMD as a Vice Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work mainly on the development of macromolecular therapeutics able to control cell behaviour through clustering of cell receptor proteins. In closing, we would like to thank all the members of CAMD for their hard work, and we also gratefully acknowledge the ongoing support from the School of Chemical Engineering and the School of Chemistry.
