BE FOOD SAFE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON!
Remember, be “food safe” during the holidays by following the four basic
steps of food safety: Clean, Separate, Cook and Chill.
✓ Clean: Remember to wash your hands with soap and warm water for
20 seconds before and after handling food. Handwashing is one of the
best ways to prevent the spread of foodborne illness. Wash all kitchen
utensils, dishes and countertops with hot water and soap.
✓ Separate: Try to use one cutting board for raw meat, poultry and
seafood and a separate one for fresh produce. Keep fish and seafood, raw
turkey, roasts, hams and other meats and their juices separate from other
side dishes when preparing meals.
✓ Cook: Cook meat and poultry to a safe minimum internal temperature:
turkey, stuffing, casseroles and leftovers to 165°F; beef, veal and lamb
roasts to 145°F; “fully cooked” ham to 140°F and fresh ham, pork and egg
dishes to 160°F. Use a food thermometer. If chitterlings are on your menu,
boil the chitterlings for 5 minutes BEFORE cleaning and preparing them.
Egg products can be substituted in recipes typically made with raw eggs,
such as eggnog, custard or key lime pie. Be sure that eggs and products
containing eggs are thoroughly cooked when serving those at higher risk
for foodborne illness.
✓ Chill: Chill food promptly. Keep the fridge at 40°F or below to prevent
bacteria from growing. Custard pies and other egg dishes should always
be kept cool. Put leftovers in the refrigerator within 2 hours. Remember
to never defrost food at room temperature. Remember, be “food safe” for
the health of you and your family. Happy eating!

SAVE MONEY THIS HOLIDAY SEASON!
Shop smart and you can enjoy the holidays without putting yourself in the
poorhouse. Here are tips to help you make the most of your time and money:
1. Decide how much you can spend. Set your holiday budget before you
go near a store.
2. Make a list and check it twice. Armed with your budget, make a list of
all the people you want to buy for. Then go over the list and decide how
much you can spend on each. You shouldn’t have to buy something for
everyone.
3. Pay cash. Set a limit, take that money out of your credit union or bank
and when that (money’s) gone, it’s over.
4. Think of credit cards as short-term loans.
5. Put yourself on your shopping list. There are things you would not have
bought for yourself that you end up, on impulse, buying (for someone
else. The best antidote is to give yourself a little splurge, too.
6. Allow enough time for all your holiday preparations. Whether you’re
shopping, baking or wrapping presents to send cross-country, budgeting
your time can end up saving you tons of money.
7. Don’t overlook the value of intangibles. Do you want to give someone
a gift but don’t have the money? If you’re already baking cookies for
your family, making an extra batch as a present for a neighbor is fairly
economical. Want to help a friend who’s got a lot on her plate? Offer to
baby-sit, walk the dog or take an elderly relative for an outing. The cost is
next to nothing, but the gift is priceless.
8. Send e-cards. They’re free -and don’t require postage.
9. Just say “no” to toy lust. If your kids still believe in Santa, help them
draft real-world wish lists. In the post-Santa years, set some financial
boundaries and give them some choices.
10. Look for meaning over glitz. A thoughtful gift can be anything as
simple as a set of dice (message: life’s a gamble) to a few beautiful bottles
collected for minimum cost at various flea markets or antique marts
11. Take a vacation. Resorts and cruise ships are hurting for business
which makes this a great time for a luxury getaway.

12. Remember the reason for the season. Whether you
celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah or Kwanzaa, keeping
the holiday’s spiritual message front and center is
a good antidote to the holiday gimmies. “Instead of
spending weekends leading up to Christmas in the
mall, it would be a lot better gift to spend your time
with your family,” says Howard.

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER
• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should
be placed in their permanent beds not later than
this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, superphosphate
or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep
flowers picked for more bloom.
• Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this
month.
• Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs,
spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with
a fertilizer such as 13-13-13; Louisiana iris with cotton
seed meal and manure.
• Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep
moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify
again.
• Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs,
speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch.
• Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily
damaged.
• Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds.
More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

Southwest Houston’s own brand new women’s flat track roller derby

JOURNEY TO BETHLEHEM
EXPERIENCE THE NIGHT HOPE WAS BORN
Current - A Christian Church (currentchristian.org) is hosting the
15 th annual Journey to Bethlehem - an outdoor walk-through drama
portraying the birth of Christ. The event will be held Thursday through
Sunday, December 8 th -11 th at Current - A Christian Church, located at
26600 Westheimer Parkway, just south of Interstate 10, Pin Oak exit #740.
Thursday, December 8 th and Friday, December 9 th , 7-9 PM, Saturday,
December 10 th , 5-9 PM and Sunday, December 11 th , 5-8 PM.
A winding trail and experienced guides will lead you through a series of
live action scenes tracing the journey Mary and Joseph took centuries
ago as they were expecting the miraculous birth of Christ. Your travels
will lead you through the village of Nazareth, into the camp of the Magi,
past the Roman census and open-air markets of Judea, ultimately ending
at the simple manger where Christmas began.

LIVING WORD LUTHERAN CHURCH
LIVING WORD TO PRESENT “BETHLEHEM’S CHILD”
Living Word invites the Katy community to its presentation of
“Bethlehem’s Child” on Sunday, December 11 th at 8 AM, 9:30 AM and
11 AM in the church sanctuary. Let us inspire and prepare you for the
celebration of the birth of our Lord with both familiar Christmas carols
and newly-composed pieces. The cantata will feature the Living Word
Choir and a chamber orchestra.
CHRISTMAS WORSHIP AT LIVING WORD
Living Word would like to invite the community to join them on Christmas
Eve to celebrate the birth of Christ. An early Christmas Eve Worship service
featuring contemporary music will be held at 2 PM. At 4 PM, children ages
2 years through 3 rd grade (and their families) are invited to a Christmas Eve
Interactive Worship service. This interactive service will allow children to
“live” the story of Christmas. Candlelight Christmas Eve Worship services
featuring traditional music, the choir, bell choir and a brass ensemble will
be held at 7 and 10 PM. Prelude music will begin 30 minutes before the
start of the Candlelight Worship service. On Christmas Day, worship will

THE TITMOUSE CLUB
The Titmouse Club is a nature program for children ages 2 ½ to 5
sponsored by the Houston Audubon Docent Guild. The program is
offered every Tuesday and Wednesday morning, 10 to 11 AM, from
mid-September until mid-May at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary,
440 Wilchester Boulevard. Each week features a different nature theme
and may include nature talks, stories, hands-on activities and walks in

AFTER SCHOOL NATURE EXPLORERS CLUB
Nature Explorers Club is designed for school-age children (ages 6-10, K-5 th )
who are interested in investigating the natural world. Each month we will
explore a different ecology topic, focusing on our own native plants and
animals. We will make a craft to take home, go on a nature hike, dip-net
for fish and tadpoles in the ponds and get to know the plants and animals

OWL PROWLS
Houston Audubon Docent Guild sponsors 4 owl prowls for the 2016-17 season.
Owl prowls begin with a lively program on owls including an opportunity
to meet live, rehabilitated owls followed by a walk in the woods in search
of wild owls. For more information, to reserve and pay online go to www.
houstonaudubon.org. Owl Prowl dates are December 9, 2016, January 13,
2017 and February 10, 2017. Owl Prowls start at 7 PM, end at 9 PM and
begin in the log cabin at the Edith L Moore Nature Sanctuary. The fee is $12
for adults and $8 for children (ages 6-17). All prowlers must be at least 6 years
of age and there must be at least one adult present for each two children.
Dress for walking in the woods and the weather. Please park in the Memorial
Drive United Methodist Church west parking lot at 12955 Memorial Drive or
the Sanctuary’s small lot at 440 Wilchester. Pre-registration is required and
there is a maximum number of participants for each prowl.

December 2 nd - Ring in the season with the 97 th Annual Mayor’s Holiday
Celebration and Tree Lighting in the heart of downtown Houston. The
spectacular event is a holiday tradition of music, Santa, fireworks and
family fun. A towering Holiday Tree, glowing with energy efficient LED
lights, shimmering ornaments and a stunning star topper will light up the
streets of downtown Houston this holiday season. The event takes place
in Hermann Square at City Hall from 6 to 8 PM and is free and open to the

holiday street festival, based on 19 th century Victorian London, features

Costumed vendors peddle their wares from street stalls and rolling carts
laden with holiday food and drink, Victorian-inspired crafts, clothing,

vocalist Amanda Hart Bassett in performing a variety of seasonal music,
from pops to classical. This performance is made possible through the

Branch Library.
• BOOK CLUB - The book clubs will not meet in December. They will
resume their regular schedule in January.
Weekly CHILDREN’S PROGRAM
• Toddler Time - Tuesdays at 10:15 AM, offers caregiver/child activities,
stories and songs for older babies, from 12 to 36 months of age. Toddler
Time will take place on December 6 th only.
• Story Time - Wednesdays at 10:15 AM, 3 to 6 years of age, presents
stories, movies and participate in age-appropriate craft activities. Story

AMUSEMENT PARK ADVENTURES - Wednesday, December 28 th , 1-2:30
PM, Meeting Room. Teens in grades 6 through 8 are invited to attend
this special LEGO® event presented by Snapology. Teens will use their
imaginations and creativity to design an amusement park. Using LEGO®
TECHNIC® bricks and other building materials, they will transform their
designs into a colorful recreation of roller coasters and other exciting
rides! Seating is limited and reservations are required. This special teen
event was made possible by donations given in memory of Cindy Ruggeri,
who passed away in 2015 after a brief illness. Ruggeri was a beloved
member of the FBCL family for many years.
