SAFETY AND SECURITY TIPS FROM S.E.A.L. SECURITY:
GIFT CARDS - HOW TO AVOID SCAMS
Purchasing a gift card might seem like an easy solution for
a last minute gift or the hard-to-buy-for. There is nothing to
wrap, the size and color are always right and it’s convenient.
However, the convenience may be undermined by a scam. The
scam is simple: Scammers record the gift card information and
then call the gift card’s toll-free phone number in a few days to
check it’s balance. Once the scammer knows the card is activated
and how much it is worth, they cash it in. Scammers quickly use
the gift card information to shop online - depleting the value of
the card that the purchaser (or its recipient) still possesses.
The same can also be performed in a more sophisticated
fashion - scammers use a small handheld scanner to read the
serial number embedded in the card and then reprogram used
cards with the stolen data. Once activated the reprogrammed
cards can be used in stores, online or even resold sold to
unsuspecting gift card shoppers.
Another variation of this scam includes carefully removing
new, inactive cards from their packaging and replacing them
with used blank cards. The thieves keep the card numbers of
the used card and when the shopper activates it, the thieves
again have access to the money.
TIPS TO PROTECT YOURSELF
While you may not want to substitute cash or a traditional gift
for a gift card, you can take some steps to help protect yourself:
• Carefully inspect the card you wish to purchase; if it appears
tampered with, move on.
• When possible, ask for a card from behind the counter,
instead of selecting one from a rack available to the public.
• Be sure any activation labels or scratch-off areas are intact.
• Do not give your personal information such as a social
security number to the cashier. The store does not need it.
• Immediately after activation, ask the cashier to scan the
card so that you can verify that the amount you requested is
available.
• Keep your receipt as proof of purchase and value.
• If shopping online, only buy directly from the company
issuing the gift card.
• Do not buy from online auction sites as gift cards may be
counterfeit, stolen or valued at less than promised.
• Register the gift card if the service is available.
ADDITIONAL GIFT CARD TIPS
• Ask about or read the fine print for expiration dates.
• Be aware of any usage or dormancy fees.
• Consider fees for both the purchaser and the user.
• Check for purchase exceptions. Can the card be used to buy
anything?
• Is the card also valid for online purchases?
• Treat the card like cash.

BOY SCOUT TROOP 987 WILL BE OFFERING A US FLAG
ROUTE IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD!
The Boy Scout Troop 987 is offering this service to your
neighborhood as a service fundraiser. For $35, the scouts
will place a 3’ x 5’ flag at your residence on the following
national holidays (place approximately sunrise and take away
approximately sundown): Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Flag
Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Patriot Day and Veteran’s
Day. Monies raised through this project will support Scouts of
Troop 987 in activities, such as attending summer camp, going on
regular camping excursions and participating in other activities.
This service fundraiser will also help our scouts build pride in
their community while helping to earn their own way for scouting

We also offer for a one-time fee of $75 to come and place flag
for you and then leave the flag with you and you are responsible

PARKING LAWS WILL BE ENFORCED
As many residents have noticed, cars parking in the wrong
direction on the side of the road has become an increasing
problem throughout the community. The officers that patrol
the neighborhood have been giving warnings for this, but will
begin issuing tickets. Please utilize your driveway and garage and
when parking on the street is necessary, please park in the same
direction as traffic.
Additional parking problems have occurred at the tennis and
clubhouse parking lots. As a result, the Board has adopted a
Common Area Parking and Tow Policy. The Policy has been filed
in the official public records with the Harris County Clerk and
is available by visiting www.crest-management.com, clicking
on Communities and selecting Governors Place. Towing will be
enforced.

MEDICAL EMERGENCY LESSONS
Houston Methodist Emergency Care Center at Cinco Ranch hosted 10 girl
scouts from Brownie Troop 152022, nine parent chaperones and six of
the troop members’ siblings on Tuesday, Oct. 11 th . The scouts had the
opportunity to tour the facility and receive hands-on lessons regarding
orthopedic splinting, basic first aid, vital signs, various pediatric
treatments and other emergency services. The emergency care center
staff even performed a demonstration of an X-ray and CT scan. The First
Aid Badge was awarded to the girls for this visit and each took home a
Houston Methodist lunchbox and an unforgettable experience.

A HOLLY JOLLY CHRISTMAS
The Fulshear Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Fulshear
presents A Holly Jolly Christmas on Saturday, December 3, 2016
in Downtown Fulshear from 5:30 PM to 9 PM. This year’s Holly Jolly
Christmas will include Ice Skating, Santa, Live Music, The Frozen
Sisters, a Live Nativity, along with a Children’s area, Vendor Booths and
a Walking Parade. The event will commence promptly at 5:30 PM with
announcements and a walking parade. Parade entry is free. Vendors and
stores will be set up with food, crafts, clothing and jewelry so you can
get some holiday shopping done! Santa will arrive during the parade and
will visit the children’s area, which will also include a LIVE Nativity Scene
and an Ice skating rink! Live music during the event by Thrive church and
White Stone band. The White Stone Band is comprised of nine Katy and
Fort Bend area worship music veterans with a passion for Funk, Jazz and
R&B. They come together to honor the music of Chicago, Earth Wind &
Fire, Steely Dan, Tower of Power, Steve Wonder and others. Temporary
road closures for the event: All lanes of FM 359 will be closed between
Front St. and Second St. between 11 AM, Saturday, December 3, 2016
and 1 AM on Sunday, December 4, 2016. Front St. will be closed between
Wilson St. and Harris St. for the duration of the event. Detour routes and

JOURNEY TO BETHLEHEM
EXPERIENCE THE NIGHT HOPE WAS BORN
Current - A Christian Church (currentchristian.org) is hosting the
15 th annual Journey to Bethlehem - an outdoor walk-through drama
portraying the birth of Christ. The event will be held Thursday through
Sunday, December 8 th -11 th at Current - A Christian Church, located at
26600 Westheimer Parkway, just south of Interstate 10, Pin Oak exit #740.

A winding trail and experienced guides will lead you through a series of
live action scenes tracing the journey Mary and Joseph took centuries
ago as they were expecting the miraculous birth of Christ. Your travels
will lead you through the village of Nazareth, into the camp of the Magi,
past the Roman census and open-air markets of Judea, ultimately ending
at the simple manger where Christmas began.

NATURE PROGRAMS FOR PRESCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN
SATURDAYS IN NATURE
This program is held on the second Saturday of each month at the
Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary. Arrive anytime between 9 and 11:30
AM. The program ends at 12 noon. A guided nature walk will begin at
10 AM. No reservations required. Donations are encouraged. This is
a “whole family” program; parents or other adult guardians should
participate with their children. Upcoming programs include November:
Tree Walk(Leaf Printing Art). December program on Winter in the
Woods(Nature Ornaments) .
THE TITMOUSE CLUB
The Titmouse Club is a nature program for children ages 2 ½ to 5
sponsored by the Houston Audubon Docent Guild. The program is
offered every Tuesday and Wednesday morning, 10 to 11 AM, from
mid-September until mid-May at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary,
440 Wilchester Boulevard. Each week features a different nature theme
and may include nature talks, stories, hands-on activities and walks in

5-session card can be purchased for $20. The child must be accompanied

Nature Explorers Club is designed for school-age children (ages 6-10,

plants and animals. We will make a craft to take home, go on a nature
hike, dip-net for fish and tadpoles in the ponds and get to know the plants

OWL PROWLS
Houston Audubon Docent Guild sponsors 4 owl prowls for the 2016-17
season. Owl prowls begin with a lively program on owls including an
opportunity to meet live, rehabilitated owls followed by a walk in the
woods in search of wild owls. For more information, to reserve and pay

Owl Prowl dates are December 9, 2016, January 13, 2017 and February
10, 2017. Owl Prowls start at 7 PM, end at 9 PM and begin in the log cabin
at the Edith L Moore Nature Sanctuary. The fee is $12 for adults and $8 for
children (ages 6-17). All prowlers must be at least 6 years of age and there
must be at least one adult present for each two children.
Dress for walking in the woods and the weather. Please park in the
Memorial Drive United Methodist Church west parking lot at 12955
Memorial Drive or the Sanctuary’s small lot at 440 Wilchester. Preregistration
is required and there is a maximum number of participants
for each prowl.
