and was intended to dedicate a day to remind nations to seek peaceful
relationships between one another, in hopes that we will never again
be divided. Unfortunately, we know, this was not the case.
Armistice Day to Veterans Day
By 1954, our country survived two more major wars, WWII and the
Korean War. American effort during World War II (1941-1945) saw
the greatest mobilization of the U.S. Army, Navy, Marines and Air
Force in the nation’s history (more than 16 million people); some
5.7 million more served in the Korean War (1950 to 1953). At the
urging of the service organizations, the 83 rd Congress decided to
reinstate ‘Armistice Day’ as ‘Veterans Day’ to honor veterans of all
wars. President Eisenhower signed the legislation on June 1, 1954.
Veterans Day hasn’t always been celebrated on November 11 th . In
1968 the Uniforms Holiday Bill ensured three-day weekends for federal
employees by celebrating four national holidays on Mondays:
Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day and Columbus
Day. This bill assigned the fourth Monday of October as Veterans
Day, despite the disapproval of many states who chose to continue
to celebrate the holiday on its original day.
Celebrating Veterans Day
President Gerald R. Ford recognized that the significance of the actual
date of Veterans Day carried historical and patriotic value to Americans
and veterans who deserved to be honored. So in 1978, he signed a new
law returning Veterans Day home to November 11 th . If November 11 th
falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the holiday is celebrated the previous
Friday or Monday, respectively. This way, Veterans day will be able to
credit the intentions of the Uniforms Holiday Bill while also serving to
those who have a deep association with the holiday.
By holding true to the date, Americans are able to focus on the importance
of Veterans Day, which is to honor and celebrate veterans for
their patriotism, passion for our country and selflessness in serving
for the common good.
10 WAYS TO RECOGNIZE MILITARY FAMILY
APPRECIATION MONTH
The month of November is Military Family Month. This provides
us all the opportunity to celebrate the sacrifices and contributions
that service members’ families have made and continue to make.
As we celebrate the annual November Military Appreciation
Month take the time to honor our veterans, their families and the
sacrifices they’ve made.
“Military families exemplify the courage and resolve that define
our national character. For their country and their loved ones,
they rise to the challenges of multiple deployments and frequent
moves - spouses who care and provide for children in their
partners’ absence, kids who make new friends and leave known
comforts behind. They are the force behind the force, patriots
who support their family members in uniform while enriching the
communities they call home.” The sacrifices and duty involved
in service to the nation often goes unnoticed by those in the
civilian world. Countless moves. Nonstop deployments. Extended
deployments…Over two million children have parents who served
in Iraq or Afghanistan alone. All of us share in the responsibility of
caring for our military families and veterans. These families have
stepped up to the plate at great personal cost and the toll that
multiple and extended deployments take can be very high. Stress
levels sky rocket and spouses and children can struggle when
service members are gone for prolonged periods and some may
even have a difficult time adjusting when the service member
returns. All of these families deserve some recognition and our
appreciation.
Families who not only survive, but thrive - who every day serve
with courage and honor, rate extra kudos. As we celebrate the
annual November Military Appreciation Month take the time to
honor our veterans, their families and the sacrifices they’ve made.
A familiar question is what can you do?
1. SAY Thank you!
2. Write a thank you note to a family for what they’ve sacrificed.
3. Provide job opportunities.
4. Offer workplace flexibility.
5. Offer to babysit. Imagine 6-9 months with no spouse at home
to support you! Yup - let that sink in! Offer to babysit. Often. It can
be a sanity saver.
6. Perform a random act of kindness for the family,
while remaining anonymous.
7. Volunteer your time. Cut the grass.
8. Thank them publicly (on Facebook, Twitter,
Instagram) for their sacrifice.
9. Donate to a veterans’ charity on their behalf.
10. ASK - “How can I help?”
AMERICAN DIABETES MONTH
Diabetes is one of the leading causes of disability and death in
the United States. It can cause blindness, nerve damage, kidney
disease and other health problems if it’s not controlled. One in
11 Americans have diabetes - that’s more than 29 million people.
And another 86 million adults in the United States are at high risk
of developing type 2 diabetes.
The good news? People who are at high risk for type 2 diabetes can
lower their risk by more than half if they make healthy changes.
These changes include: eating healthy, increasing physical activity
and losing weight.
How can American Diabetes Month make a difference?
We can use this month to raise awareness about diabetes risk factors
and encourage people to make healthy changes. Here are just a
few ideas: Encourage people to make small changes, like taking the
stairs instead of the elevator, talk to people in your community about
getting regular checkups. They can get their blood pressure and cholesterol
checked and ask the doctor about their diabetes risk or ask
doctors and nurses to be leaders in their communities by speaking
about the importance of healthy eating and physical activity.
How can I help spread the word?
Add information about preventing type 2 diabetes to your newsletter,
tweet about American Diabetes Month, host a community
event where families can be active while learning about local health
resources, add a Web badge to your website or join the American
Diabetes Association in celebrating American Diabetes Month External
THANKSGIVING FUN HOLIDAY FACTS
Thanksgiving typically means food, family and football. But the holiday
also might be remembered for the birth of another American
tradition, the TV dinner. In 1953, someone at Swanson misjudged
how many frozen turkeys the company would sell for Thanksgiving
role committed to helping a student with his/her academic and
social development. Mentors meet with students one-on-one for
approximately 30 minutes each week. Currently, over 600 mentors
are matched with students.
To become a mentor, you must:
attend a training session (REGISTER); complete a global volunteer/
mentor application; consent to a criminal history record check;
CFISD POLICE COLLECTED DRUGS FOR
DISPOSAL ON DEA’S ‘TAKE BACK DAY’
The CFISD police department station, located at 11200 Telge
Road, served as a prescription drug drop-off site for the Drug
Enforcement Administration (DEA)’s Take Back Day, on October
22 nd from 10 AM to 2 PM.
The Barker | November 2016
The drive-through service in the station’s front parking lot was a
free and anonymous to the community. Take Back Day can help
prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding homes of the potentially
dangerous prescriptions.
The CFISD police station first served as a Take Back Day site on
April 30 th , collecting 22 boxes to become one of the DEA’s largest
collection points that day.
This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health
issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly
susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Rates of prescription
drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of
accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies
show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained
from family and friends, including from the home medicine
cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual
methods for disposing of unused medicines - flushing them down
the toilet or throwing them in the trash - both pose potential
safety and health hazards.
For more information about the disposal of prescription drugs
or about the October 22 nd Take Back Day event, visit the DEA
Diversion website.
