ways our neighbors can help us, we just
need an easier way to connect with them.
(MG) MESSAGE FROM
THE BOARD
The Board is in need of residents to volunteer to help
judge the Holiday Lighting Contest. It has been the
same people judging for many years now. If we cannot
get enough new volunteers to judge, we will not be able
to have the contest this year. Please call 281-500-7126
and let us know if you can help out.
(MG) Homeowners Association Monthly Board Meeting
The next monthly homeowners association Board
Northmead Village
(NM) BUILDING YOUR COMMUNITY: INSPIRING WORDS
“In any community there’s a strong pull home. People want to
return, see their community get better economically and socially.
You can build those community-grown opportunities for the
kids who’ve graduated from college to return home, to provide
businesses and support things going on. It’ll only happen through
education.” - Denise Juneau
(NM) INTRODUCING THE BOARD AND VOLUNTEERS
We thought it would be a great idea to introduce our residents to Northmead
Village Community Volunteers and Board Members. This month, we would like
to introduce Northmead HOA Board member, Tony Ashford.
Tony has lived in the Copperfield area for fifteen plus years and likes staying
active in his community to make it a safer place to live. He is presently on two
Boards, Northmead Village Community Association and is the chairman of
the Crime Watch Committee. He works with our contracted HCSO officers to
promote security and crime awareness, monitors the Contract Law Enforcement
Agencies’ performance and to maintain a neighborhood Crime Watch program.
Tony invites you to the next Crime Watch meeting on December 20, 2016, at
6:30 PM at the Copperfield Community Center located at 15409 Willow River
Drive (next to Labay Jr. High). All Copperfield residents are welcome to attend.
(NM) VOLUNTEERS - HOLIDAY DECORATIONS CONTEST
A Christmas Decoration Contest Committee is forming so if you are interested,
please send in your contact information. We are also putting together an
Easter Egg Hunt Event so sign up for that committee if you want to get
involved. What better way to meet new people and make new friends than
to work on the projects that make our community better? Please contact
grahammanagement@sbcglobal.net if you can volunteer to help with planning
and/or at the events.
Crime Watch Meeting - December 20 th (see below for details)
Christmas Decoration Contest - Judging will be the week of December 19 th -23 rd
(NM) NORTHMEAD HOLIDAY LIGHTS CONTEST
Northmead Village will give 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd prizes to each of the three sections in
Northmead. Judges will be looking at the houses the week before Christmas
and the winners will be announced in the January Newsletter. So, let’s see
some awesome creative holiday home decorating this season!
Holiday Lights Trivia - Inventors, Thomas Edison and Edward Johnson (1880
&1882) and Albert Sadacca (1917) - Thomas Edison, the inventor of the first
successful practical light bulb, created the very first strand of electric lights.
During the Christmas season of 1880, these strands were strung around the
outside of his Menlo Park Laboratory. Railroad passengers traveling by the
laboratory got their first look at an electrical light display. But it would take
almost forty years for electric Christmas lights to become the tradition that we
all know and love.
(NM) CRIME WATCH - COPPERFIELD CRIME WATCH
The next Crime Watch 2016 Meeting Date is December 20 th at 6:30 PM in the
Copperfield Community Center.
The Crime Watch Committee wants to remind you to Lock Your Car Doors!
This one helpful rule seems so simple and yet is so often ignored. A thief
looking for a car to steal is more likely to go for the vehicle whose owner was
kind enough to complete his first step for him and has given him open access
to everything inside.
Don’t Leave Valuables in Sight - Smash-and-grab thieves typically aren’t
criminal masterminds who craft clever schemes to swipe your stuff. Most are
casual opportunists. They see something they like and break in and take it. So
keep your valuables out of sight.
Help make Copperfield a safer place!
• Save the Sheriff Dept. phone number on your mobile phone! 713-221- 6000.
• Be aggressive in calling in all suspicious behavior and/or suspicious vehicle activity.
• Tell your friends and neighbors! The stronger we are as a community in
fighting crime, the safer we can make Copperfield.
Watch for School Zones! There are TWO School zones on West Road.
• When driving in school zones, watch out for student pedestrians.
• Slow down and watch for children congregating near bus stops.
• Look for children who might dart into the street without looking for traffic.
• Know and obey the laws concerning traffic and school buses in Texas.
NO right on Red at Pebble Lake and West Road.
This is a designated NO RIGHT ON RED intersection for protection of the
oncoming traffic that cannot be seen by drivers waiting on Pebble Lake.
Meetings - 4 th Tuesday at 6:30 PM
Forest Heights Pool Meeting Room
(WC) HELPFUL HOLIDAY CRIME WATCH TIPS
As the hectic, holiday season approaches and the crime rate increases, it pays to remember the following:
• Be alert and aware of your surroundings at all times. Keep packages and purchases hidden
in the trunk of the vehicle or out of easy viewing sight. Remember others could be watching
as you exit stores or the mall - so do not load your vehicle until you are finished shopping and
are ready to depart.
• Label all outdoor Christmas displays with your name, address, phone number and email
address. In the event decorations are stolen and recovered, you will get your items back.
• Make sure Facebook and other networking sites are filtered so only those you want to read
messages receive them. Cyber-savvy thieves are beginning to stalk social networking sites.
Individuals who post photos of expensive gift items and post vacation plans become easy targets.
• Use the Sheriff Department’s Vacation Watch if going out of town over the holidays. Log onto
Copperfield.org, select Westcreek Village, then select Westcreek Crime Watch website and
finally select Vacation Watch forms. After downloading form, mail or fax the form at least 5
days before the watch begins.
• Most importantly, always lock your vehicles, doors, windows and set your alarms.
• If you see something suspicious, say something by calling the Sheriff Deputy’s non
emergency number 713-221-6000 #6.
BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA - COPPERHEAD DISTRICT
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found
in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant
in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting
helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership
skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.
The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities
that allow them to:
• Try new things.
• Provide service to others.
• Build self-confidence.
• Reinforce ethical standards.
Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals
while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high selfesteem.
As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure
can be resisted and the right choices can be made.
Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting
through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help
our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area
Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5
to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing
units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Our Units typically meet weekly.
Many of our units are supported by the local Elementary Schools including:
Birkes, Copeland, Duryea, Fiest, Hemmingway, Holmsley, Horne, Jowell,
Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Postma, Robinson, Sheridan, Tipps, Walker and Wilson.
Other Community groups include: Autumn Creek Baptist Church, Beck and
Masten Automotive, Cornerstone United Methodist Church, Copperfield
Church, Crossbridge Church, Cy-Fair Kiwanis Club, Deerfield Village HOA,
LDS Bear Creek and Copperfield Wards, Middlegate Village HOA, Peace
Community Church, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church and Thornton
many service members are reluctant to expose personal vulnerabilities to
professional counselors. Give an Hour provides services that are separate
from the military establishment, offering options to service members who
might otherwise fail to seek or receive appropriate care.
Give an Hour is a nonpartisan, nonprofit national network of mental
health professionals providing free counseling services to returning
troops and their families. Give an Hour offers services to veterans of the
wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and their family members. Family members
are loosely defined to include married or unmarried partners, parents,
siblings, aunts/uncles—anyone connected to the veteran who is suffering
a psychological effect related to the veteran’s service.
Banyan Counseling Network has an office located near the North Cypress
Medical Center and is trained to provide individual and family counseling.
Family support groups are also currently forming. People interested in
receiving services through Give an Hour are encouraged to call 281-855-
1982 or log on to www.banyancounseling.com, (click Military Families
link) or www.giveanhour.org to determine availability or to locate another
provider in your area.
