Record-setting Rainbow Gala
19th Annual Rainbow Gala Raises more than $2 million
Gala Honorees, Leo W. Gerard, International President, United Steelworkers and John P.
Surma, chairman and chief executive officer, United States Steel Corporation, teamed up to
help raise more money for JDRF than any previous honorees in the Western Pennsylvania
Chapter’s history.

More than 750 guests had the
opportunity to bid on one-of-a-kind live
auction items, including a private tour of
the U. S. Steel Edgar Thomson Plant, a
Goodyear Blimp Ride for four that sold
twice, a Harley-Davidson Motorcycle and
an exciting Pittsburgh Penguins package
where the lucky winner will ride the
Zamboni during a game. In all, the live
auction raised more than $179,000
toward the total.
Many guests were inspired to participate in Fund A Cure after listening
to Dusty Elias Kirk, president of the JDRF board of directors,
passionately tell why she became involved with JDRF. All Fund A Cure
donations go directly to support diabetes research and this year raised more than $179,000
toward the total.
The 2011 Rainbow Gala was chaired by Carol Oxenreiter and co-chaired by Mary Jo Elliott
who, along with a very active committee, worked for months to create this spectacular
evening. George Stewart, Managing Partner at Reed Smith
LLP Pittsburgh Office, chaired the outstanding corporate
committee and Julie Lichtenstein and her committee assembled
over 400 items for the silent auction.
