End of an era for leisure centre but the beginning of a new dawn
The end of an era is nigh with the
closure of Rushcliffe Leisure Centre
in the new year, but a new dawn
will begin in West Bridgford when
Rushcliffe Arena opens after a
multi-million pound refurbishment.
Rushcliffe Arena was knocked
down in 2015 and in its place - set
to open in January - is a new stateof-the-art
leisure centre, which
will include a 25-metre six-lane
swimming pool, a learner pool with
family beach, a 120+ station fitness
suite, two aerobics studio, a group
cycling studio, sauna/steam room,
sports hall, squash courts, snooker
room, a six-lane indoor bowls hall
and Cafe Vita.
The new centre received a setback
when it was hit by fire in September
of last year while the old building
was being pulled down. A 17-yearold
boy has since been given
a two-year detention order for
starting the fire.
Councillor John Cottee, from
Rushcliffe Borough Council, said:
“We’re pleased that the culprit has
been caught and sentenced. This
fire did set the building project
back, but we’re pleased that the
new Rushcliffe Arena is due to open
on target in January 2017.”

The Rushcliffe Arena, situated off
Rugby Road, used to be home
to agricultural fields up until
the 1960s, with historical maps
showing this from as long ago as
the 1880s.
In the 1960s it became a landfill
site, before the construction of
Rushcliffe Arena in 1993 with
further expansion in 1995. The
new premises will not only provide
leisure facilities for the local
community, but also offices for the
Borough Council.
Councillor Neil Clarke, Rushcliffe
Borough Council leader, said:
“We’re very much looking forward
to this exciting opportunity to
provide modern fitness and leisure
facilities, whilst at the same time
reducing the running costs of the
council offices by relocating to
modern efficient premises on the
same site.”
Rushcliffe Leisure Centre opened
in October 1976, next to Rushcliffe
School in West Bridgford and it fast
became a popular leisure location.
Its vast swimming pool with room
for both competitive and leisure
swimming saw it become a mustdo
activity for the young and old.

Not only boasting the swimming
pool, the squash courts and sports
hall meant that local residents
could play a variety of sports all
under one roof. Residents have
been fondly looking back at their
experiences at the leisure centre.
John, from Edwalton, said: “My
memories are fantastic ones and
I remember going to a swimming
club on a Saturday morning. I just
remember getting up very early, or
it felt like it at the time, and being
taught to swim. It holds good
memories for me, so it is a real
shame it is shutting down.”

West Bridgford resident, Dawn,
said: “I used to go swimming there
with school and it will be a sad loss
to see it go. I hope the swimming
lessons will continue at the new
site, but it will not be so convenient
for the Rushcliffe School pupils.
“I also used the play table tennis on
a Sunday evening when they had
an activity club for youngsters. You
could do a whole range of sports
and activities - and a whole group
of us used to go up there. I spent a
lot of my childhood there and have
many great memories from fun
times with friends.”

Meet The Pasta Kidz who are causing a stir in West Bridgford

Local professional actress turned
author, Bryony Supper, saw a
dream fulfilled last month as
her debut children's book, The
Inventing Tubes – A Pasta Kidz
& Petz Adventure, was launched
and went on sale at Inspirations on
Central Avenue in West Bridgford.
The Pasta Kidz and Petz
Adventures, which will eventually
comprise 25 unique stories, are
humorous, zany, magical and
chaotic tales that bring together
the pasta-themed Kidz, and
their creative Petz, in unusual
circumstances. Among the

of their own. The songs, music
and humour are told in specially
invented pasta language, which will
engage four to seven year olds in a
fantasy world of friendship.
Prior to beginning work on the
books, West Bridgford-based
Bryony was no stranger to the
spotlight. Having trained as a
professional actress, she went on
to appear in a number of comedy-
-o;based roles in both theatre and
television. It was her natural talent
for comedy that was at the heart of
her Pasta Kidz creations.
Bryony told the Local News: “The
feedback surrounding the launch
has been so exciting. I have done
interviews for press and local
radio, all of whom have been
really positive and supportive of
the book. I’m also booked to do
events in Waterstones book shop
in Nottingham in the new year and
we’ve just completed a project with
