West Bridgford girl Amelia is named a top fundraiser in Nottingham
Ten-year-old Amelia York from
West Bridgford has been awarded
the title of a ‘Top Fundraiser’ for
raising over £500 during this year’s
Cycle Live Nottingham event for
the charity, When You Wish Upon a
Star (WYWUAS).
The charity awards were held by
WYWUAS and Perfect Motion to
recognise charitable cyclists. It saw
Amelia and two other fundraisers
awarded cycling jerseys for raising
over £2,500 between them.
Amelia, a Year 5 pupil at Greythorn
Primary School, said: “Three years
ago I lost my granddad to cancer
and ever since then I’ve been doing
fundraising activities in his memory.
I wanted to help WYWUAS because
illness is horrible for everyone
especially families and children and
I just wanted to make a positive
difference for anyone going through
a difficult time.”
Cycle Live Nottingham 2016
marked the end of Amelia’s
fundraising campaign, during which
she took part in an incredible trio of
events including a mile swim and
an 11-mile run. Altogether Amelia
raised £516.46 for WYWUAS and
was recognised as the charity’s
third-highest fundraiser.

Jo York, Amelia’s mother, said:
“We are so very proud of Amelia.
She has such an amazing sense
of empathy for someone so
young. She’s done a lot of charity
fundraising already and all of it has
been her own choice. She definitely
has her own mind and has big
aspirations for changing the world
when she grows up.”

Awards were also presented to
Alain Mengoli and Sean Barrett,
who raised £912 and £656
respectively for the charity.

Dance student Oscar reaches final of prestigious competition
Former Leonard School of Dance
student Oscar Ward has reached
the final of the prestigious BBC
Young Dancer Competition.
Oscar, who is now a third year
student at the world-renowned
Ballet West School in Scotland,
beat hundreds of talented young
dancers from all over the UK to be
one of only five finalists.
The grand final is due to be
screened towards the end of
January next year.
Oscar is also travelling to Sydney
in Australia to take part in the

Bussell Bursary to enable him to
attend the competition.
The judges for the competition
will be David McAllister, artistic
director of the Australian Ballet;
Kevin O’Hare, director of the Royal
Ballet and Francesco Ventriglia,
artistic director of the Royal New
Zealand Ballet.
Helen Leonard told The Local
News: “Oscar attended Leonard
School of Dance in West Bridgford
from the age of six and he always
wanted to dance.
“His hard work, determination
and perseverance are now
being rewarded with these really
amazing opportunities.”
