opprairie.com Life & Arts the orland park prairie | December 8, 2016 | 23 ‘Fury Road’ Black & Chrome results as mixed as its cover art Bill Jones, Editor In the optional introduction for the Black & Chrome Edition of “Mad Max: Fury Road,” director George Miller offers an explanation for draining the bombastic orange tones from the best film of 2015 (no matter what the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said). And, really, it has a lot to do with another film. Miller said he first got the idea to do a Mad Max film in black and white after seeing a cheap color print of “Road Warrior” while the composer was referencing it on a soundstage. He loved the way it looked and actually thought that might have been a better way to release the film. Clearly the idea stuck in his head, and it is easy to understand why. In the brief moments black-and-white footage of “Road Warrior” is shown during the introduction, it does look really cool. For moments in “Mad Mad: Fury Road,” it looks really cool, too. But “Fury Road” was not the best of the Mad Max films to drain of its color; it just happened to be the one successful enough to afford Miller the opportunity to try it. The experiment is worth it. “Fury Road” proves interesting in this format, especially for die-hard fans. And there are certain instances — especially when the camera is shooting up at characters against the sky — that it looks absolutely brilliant. But Miller took such care with the colors of “Fury rating: R | genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi | run time: 120 minutes Road” that it absolutely wowed in color. And it feels like something is lost in the explosions, in the character designs and in the postapocalyptic landscape in the Black & Chrome edition. Certain action elements — most notably the frenetic introductory scenes — also feel less engaging, and the upped pacing of the early chase sequence does not translate well to the format. The biggest disappointment, though, may be the box art. The edition offered a great opportunity to do some “Black & Chrome” art with the box, but instead it seems Warner Home Video opted to play it safe, to make sure potential buyers know they also get the color version with the new set. But the “Two- Film Collection” branding does not seem completely honest, and the split cover looks like something out of the bargain bin, rather than a special edition. All of that said, while it is not the definitive edition of “Fury Road” and not worth another purchase for longtime fans, for those who have not picked up the film yet, getting it in a package that includes both formats is a no-brainer.
