26 | December 8, 2016 | The orland park prairie Life & Arts opprairie.com Orland Park resident organizes toy drive for 15th year Brittany Kapa, Assistant Editor Don Ade retired from the Chicago Police Department in 2000, and the Orland Park resident went looking for a part time job to keep busy during the day. Ade contacted the Orland Park Police Department and lucked out in finding a position in the evidence room. Then, Chief Tim McCarthy approached Ade about starting the Orland Park Law Enforcement Organization — a place for retired police officers to come together. For the past 15 years, Ade has been having monthly meetings with the organization, and November is by far the biggest meeting. Held at the Orland Park Civic Center, the group has the biggest turnout during November because of the toy drive Ade holds. The toys collected during the Nov. 17 meeting, along with those in the donation box at the Orland Park Police Department, will be delivered to excited students Dec. 9 at Blair Early Childhood Center in Chicago. “I always think it’s better to give than receive,” McCarthy said. “It’s such a worthy cause. Everyone is really looking forward to this meeting in November. There’s a social aspect to it, of course. It’s the biggest meeting we have every year.” Between 75 and 100 people show up for that November meeting, and every one of them brings a toy. Ade, and a few others volunteers from the organization, bring the donated toys to Blair themselves, along with a special guest. Santa Claus spends half the day handed out the donations from members. “There’s about 130 [students] at the school, and each class comes in at one time,” Ade said. “There’s only 6, 7 or 8 [children] in a class.” Blair provides small class sizes for children who suffer from multiple disabilities, and multiple families at the school cannot afford Christmas presents for their children. That is why the members of OPLEO like to get involved. “All of them have seen the dark side through their law enforcement careers,” Mc- Carthy said of the OPLEO members. “I know they like the idea of helping out these kids during Christmas. It brings a little smile to a kids face and helps them out at a time of year when they wouldn’t get a toy under their tree.” It is that feeling of helping those who really need it that Ade said keeps him motivated holiday season after holiday season. For those who wish to donate a gift for the children at Blair school, a box located in the lobby of the Orland Park Police Department, 15100 S. Ravinia Ave, will be accepting gifts until Thursday, Dec. 8. Business Briefs Culver’s of Orland Park’s holiday toy drive to benefit Advocate South Suburban Hospital, South Suburban Family Shelter Culver’s celebrates this holiday season by giving back to the community. Throughout the Chicago area, more than 30 restaurant locations will be hosting toy drives for local hospitals. As a third-year initiative, Culver’s continues its tradition of spreading holiday cheer. Culver’s of Orland Park has partnered with Advocate South Suburban Hospital and the South Suburban Family Shelter for its drive that will see all toy donations personally delivered to the pediatric unit by team members in mid-December. Until then, the restaurant will be collecting new, unwrapped gifts for all ages. To donate, visit Culver’s of Orland Park at 9130 W. 159th St. Orland Park woman among those honored for marketing, public relations The Illinois Society for Healthcare Marketing and Public Relations honored marketing, public relations and communications professionals from across the state at its annual Conference and Pinnacle Awards Presentation in Galena. Silver Cross Hospital received 10 Pinnacle Awards, including Best of Show for Silver Cross Healthy Community Commission’s partnership with Warren Sharpe Community Center’s Green Sprout Urban Farm. The Commission provided $30,000 in funding to educate area youth about agriculture, healthy food choices and entrepreneurship, as well as increase physical activity along with supporting the Warren- Sharpe Community Center’s food pantry. An additional $3,500 was donated to sponsor 15 children and 5 adults to travel to Washington D.C. to tour First Lady Michelle Obama’s White House garden in 2015. Each year, ISHMPR sponsors the Pinnacle Awards to recognize excellence and achievement in healthcare marketing and public relations. This year’s program included 100 entries in 25 project categories, submitted by hospitals and healthcare systems from across the state. Entries were judged on their own merit by the Carolinas Healthcare Public Relations & Marketing Society, in accordance with established criteria for project planning, implementation and overall results. The Silver Cross Marketing Team and Community Relations includes Karen Helman, manager of marketing and community relations and an Orland Park resident. The team received a total of 10 awards. The POTCF is a nonprofit organization that provides comfort and distraction from painful procedures to children and teens diagnosed with cancer by providing a toy, gift or gift card in 50 hospitals nationwide. Nowhere else in the nation does such a program exist. CEO Colleen Kisel founded the organization in 1996 after her then 7-year-old son Martin had been diagnosed with leukemia in 1993. Kisel discovered that giving her son a toy after each procedure provided a calming distraction from his pain, noting that when children are diagnosed with cancer their world soon becomes filled with doctors, nurses, chemotherapy drugs, surgeries and seemingly endless painful procedures. Martin celebrated his 23rd anniversary of remission from the disease earlier this year.
