Coaching & Talent Development “Believe You Can” Wins NZRA Outstanding Event Award 2016 In June 2016, iSPORT and Aktive together with our event partners, created, facilitated and hosted a secondary school leadership event - “Believe You Can” - bringing together close to 650 students and principals from 60 Auckland schools. The event attracted an online audience of more than 8000 people. Guest speakers on the day included former All Black’s Captain and iSPORT Foundation founder Richie McCaw, world renowned sport expert and author Dr Ralph Pim, former Silver Fern Temepara Bailey, Olympic gold medallist Sir John Walker and long distance biker Jeremy Scott. Key messages included self-leadership, self-belief, focusing on and developing your strengths, and the value of sport and recreation in developing leadership and character. The “Believe You Can” student leadership day highlighted the power of collaboration and the strength of knowledge and expertise in the Auckland sporting community. Fittingly, it received the New Zealand Recreation Association Outstanding Event Award for 2016. Talent, Leadership, Character Talent, Leadership, Character (TLC) is a framework that uses sport to develop strong, resilient leaders of character that excel in sport, school and life. TLC supports teachers, coaches, students and whānau to learn about the power of teamwork and the importance of moral and performance character. In 2016, the programme’s reach was extended to eight schools: Southern Cross Campus, Onehunga High School, Rutherford College, Mahurangi College, Auckland Grammar School, Mt Albert Grammar School, Westlake Boys High School and Long Bay College. A variety of programme delivery channels have been utilised including full school assemblies, senior management presentations, teacher, coach and parent education and student workshops. The response has been overwhelmingly positive. The development of leadership skills and good character attributes has led to improved performances on the sports ground as well as within the classroom. Many parents have also commented on positive changes taking place in the home environment. In the past year, TLC has impacted 14,556 students, 8 principals, 150 sport coaches and 200 teachers and senior staff. Key highlights: Southern Cross Campus Established a Talent, Leadership, Character award this year recognising a student who has best demonstrated leadership and shown strong character throughout the year in sport and school. This year’s inaugural winner was Uaealesi Funaki. Onehunga High School Using TLC as the driver, Onehunga have developed a culture framework aligning to the school values that all teams in the school can make their own. Auckland Grammar School Joined the TLC programme in 2016 as it aligned perfectly to the Headmaster’s vision of producing quality young men of character. Dr Ralph Pim spoke to a full school assembly and the school has also created a new role overseeing sport at the school, focusing on developing leadership and character. Mt Albert Grammar School “As a school we are benefiting immensely from the relationship with Aktive. Ralph’s work has been quite revolutionary in the school – in many ways a ‘whole school improvement plan’!” – Pat Drumm, Headmaster. Rutherford College Students created an ‘identity’ for the sports programme within the school demonstrating passion and enthusiasm and putting a large amount of effort into the process. Westlake Boys High School Established a significant coach development programme, targeting their senior coaches. This included two workshops per term focused on the key messages of the TLC framework. Mahurangi College A step has been made towards sustainability of the framework going forward, as the College staff led the student development component this year. This allowed for students passionate about sport, music, performing arts and academics to begin to understand leadership and character development. Long Bay College TLC was the core component of their student ‘high achievers’ breakfast this year. Dr Ralph Pim was the keynote speaker to over 80 students who have all achieved in sports or study. 15
