Dear Members of the
Bishop Fenwick Family,
It is with great pride that I share this Annual Report with
the Bishop Fenwick community. This report outlines
the generous investment made by so many in support
of our mission as a Catholic, college preparatory school.
During the past year, lives have been touched by the
generosity and consideration of many. Our educational
mission is nurtured and strengthened as we steward
our resources in benefit of the needs of our students. From spiritual formation and
service opportunities to academic excellence, athletic achievements, and student
involvement in an array of activities, each Crusader is challenged to find and develop
a personal relationship with God, family, and the school community. Each day,
extraordinary students interact with devoted faculty and staff members who guide
them and develop connections that will last a lifetime. Your support has helped to
foster these wonderful interactions. Thank you!
Last year, we asked for your support and our alumni, parents, and friends responded
with generosity. Your contributions to The Fenwick Fund directly impact the quality
and scope of the educational and extracurricular opportunities we are able to provide.
They helped to make it possible:
• to continue to put our students first;
• to offer financial assistance to qualified students;
• for our dedicated and accomplished faculty to engage and challenge students;
• to update our technology and improve facilities;
• to ensure a rigorous academic curriculum that includes a variety of Advanced
Placement and dual enrollment college level classes.
Know that your thoughtful and unselfish generosity is enormously appreciated and is
the source of significant encouragement. I ask for your prayers and continued support
as we embark upon another exciting year. I look forward to joining you at the many
initiatives and events that are planned. May God’s blessings be with you always.
Sincerely,
Fenwick: Updated
Over the past 6 months we have been working to clearly
communicate all the great components of a Bishop Fenwick
education. Specifically, we have worked to respect our history,
articulate the benefits of the full Fenwick experience, make clear
how our students, ever mindful of our faith filled mission, are able
to achieve academically, continuing on to great colleges and
successful and meaningful lives and careers.
To that end, we revamped our logo, keeping the components of
the original shield, but making it more modern and creating the
tagline, “Where opportunity and achievement meet.” We feel this
captures what makes us Fenwick. Our students are able to take
advantage of so many opportunities within the school, to achieve
their “personal best.”
Making a Difference
The Fenwick Fund
Gifts to the Fenwick Fund support our students and school community in direct and
impactful ways. Financial Aid, Merit Scholarships, Sponsor a Student and Achievement
Awards are a number of the ways the Fenwick Fund directly affects individual students
like those below while Event Sponsorships, Fund a Dream, Reunion Giving and other
unrestricted gifts support the school community in a more comprehensive manner.
The generosity of the Fenwick community sustains the legacy to provide a collegepreparatory
education based on academic excellence and faith-based values of
compassion, leadership, service and justice. As true as it was in 1959, this mission
continues today with vibrancy as depicted below.
much fuller than I ever
couldn’t have anticipated
how my high school
grow because of the supportive and tightknit
to get involved in
anything else, but at
Fenwick I got to ex -
I got to do track which was probably the best
Bishop Fenwick was the
place for me because of
the small class sizes and
a profound impact on
my life. They all cared
about what I had to say
consistently ask me about my high school
beyond the classroom.
Crusader Pride
Over the course of their time at Bishop Fenwick, students on average participate
in a minimum of five extra-curricular activities. Close to 80 % of our student body
participates in Fenwick’s athletic program which consistently qualifies for post
season play. Healthy competition challenges our students to discover their
strengths, develop new talents and refine many skill sets. Our playing fields
reflect not only our student’s athleticism, but their respect, integrity and honor.
Of special distinction this year was our Girls Varsity Basketball Team who won the
Massachusetts Division 3 State Championship. GO, CRUSADERS!
A Chat With
Peter andruskiewicz, ‘75
The impact more than four decades later Fenwick
had on Peter Andruszkiewicz ’75 is constantly
revealing itself. Peter remembers
cutting lawns, and toiling at Herman’s Sporting
Goods Store in the Northshore Shopping Center
(where one of his favorite teachers, Mr. Palin
- yes, that Mr. Palin - also worked) to supplement
the funds that his family happily sacrificed
to afford Peter and his brother Paul ’78 the
best possible education. As a Crusader, he was
a three season athlete. Hockey was his favorite,
and he remembers the 1973-1974 season,
coached by John Gillis and Bo Tierney with
special fondness.
After graduating from Fenwick, he went to
Springfield College and worked in the local
tanneries over summer breaks to earn money
for his college tuition. It was at Springfield
where he met his wife, Danielle, and receiving
his degree and with the mentorship of his father-in-law,
began a career in the healthcare
industry. More than three decades navigating
the dynamic and shifting demands of that industry
saw Peter and his family moving up and
down the east coast, until returning closer to
his roots at Blue Cross, Blue Shield, Rhode Island,
where this past June he retired as CEO.
Upon speaking to Peter about his career, he related
two things that
stood out: the impact the
Kaiser Model (a business
model that integrates a
nonprofit healthcare plan
with its own hospitals and
clinics) had upon his thinking
when, as CEO, he
helmed a patient-centered
philosophy at
BC/BS, which dovetailed
perfectly with the understanding
of how important
it is to serve others, an understanding
he first gained
at Bishop Fenwick. Proud
of fostering his company’s
commitment to providing quality patient centered
healthcare, Peter furthered challenged
his staff to make a difference in Rhode Island
lives, which resulted in a program called Blue
Across Rhode Island. Now in its fifth year, over
75% of the work force engages with non-profit
agencies around the state to help accomplish
tasks that would other wise not have been completed
in a single day. This program continues
to be one of the largest single company volunteer
events in Rhode Island. To spend a day
giving back to the community is not a novel
idea, but Peter and his team brought the concept
to Rhode Island, and the Ocean State is
better off because of it.
In the midst of this personal and professional
goal, Peter made the surprising admission that
the most important decision he ever made was
to “drop out” and take his family with him! An
opportunity for a sabbatical presented itself, so
he and Danielle homeschooled their four children
Molly, Peter Jr., Grace and Eily (aged 6
through 13 at the time) for two years. Their
friends told them they were “out of their minds.”
Undaunted, Peter and Danielle built the curriculum
where travel was integral to their approach.
The family planned a journey that
(L to R) Eily, Grace, Peter ’75, Molly, Danielle and Peter Jr.
the Class of 1966
Bishop Fenwick's Class of 1966 celebrated their 50th Reunion this fall.
Surrounded by fans in Donaldson stadium, they witnessed the undefeated
Crusaders’ third win of the season, 21–6. The class, joined by Coach Alex Kulavich
and Mr. Ralph LeDuc, took to the 50 yard line during halftime to celebrate this
milestone to the applause of the assembled fans. Numerous members of the
1965 Varsity Football team were in attendance, deemed one of the most
dominating football teams in Fenwick history. That year the team went 8 – 0, won
the Eastern Massachusetts Class C and Catholic Central League titles, shut out
its first four opponents and allowed only thirty four points for the season. The
weekend continued with a class party on Saturday, followed by a Sunday Brunch,
Prayer Service and Tour at Bishop Fenwick High School. Congratulations, Bishop
Fenwick High School Class of 1966.
Betsy McGinnity
Class of 1968,
Bonitas et Fidelitas
Betsy McGinnity’s life and career could serve as a case study for daily implementation of the
core values that Fenwick faculty, administrators and students have imparted on each other
for over a half-century.
As a Fenwick student Betsy was involved on the student council, yearbook and as a member
of the girls basketball team. She also won the pie eating contest – female division – during
senior week. Post-Fenwick, Betsy received her undergraduate degree at Trinity College in
Washington, DC, and earned an MEd in Special Education with a focus on multiple disabilities
from the University of Washington in Seattle. After teaching in Washington State, she returned
to Massachusetts to assume a position with Perkins School for the Blind, where she has spent
the past 36 years.
As Executive Director of the school’s Training and Educational Resources Program, Betsy
manages the coordination of services, directly impacting on the lives of the visually impaired.
Thousands of lives are enhanced annually through this Perkins program. Part of her
responsibilities include coordinating the National Deaf Blind Equipment Distribution Program
which is helping many of her former students gain access to 21st Century Communication,
including cell phones and the internet.
So, what does all of this have to do with Fenwick? Betsy reflected on this question: “As students
we were engaged around issues of social justice, for example, volunteering and preparing
packages for the needy during the holidays. When I began to think about career choices, my
experience with the Sis -
ters of Notre Dame from
grade school through
college focused me on
employment that would
be for the greater good.”
Betsy Is an example of the
graduate generated by
the Fen wick Experience: a
woman with a lifelong
commitment to the good -
ness and loyalty we were
taught in and out of the
classroom.
“My experience with the Sisters of Notre Dame from grade school
through college focused me on employment that would be for the
greater good.”
A few words from
Dan Dunn ‘74
Bishop Fenwick
Board of trustee President
It’s been four decades and Bishop Fenwick is still a large part of my life. As students, Fenwick
challenged us to achieve. The faculty, led by the Sisters of Notre Dame, fostered a spirit of
scholarship, faith, and service to others. That experience shaped us and helped me to achieve – in
my further education, in my career, with my family and in the community. Scholarship, character,
faith and service remain as core tenets of Fenwick today.
Choosing a high school was easy – Fenwick just felt right. Affording tuition was the challenge for
my family. Someone was watching over us those many years ago. A benefactor generously
supported my education at Fenwick and that of my two younger brothers. We will forever be
grateful for that support.
It is gratifying to be involved at Fenwick today. I joined the Fenwick Board of Trustees six years ago
and have watched the school grow and remain vibrant. Families continue to choose Fenwick. Our
students and faculty inspire us and achieve success in many ways – in the classroom, through the
arts, on the athletic field. Our graduates attend top colleges and universities. Campus ministry
encourages Fenwick’s young men and women to be involved and to serve others – and they do.
Giving back to Fenwick is a priority for my family. We join many of you in supporting the school. For us,
we have established a fund at the school in memory of our father, Alfred Dunn, to afford improvements
in technology and other building needs. We participate with others in the Sponsor a Student program
– contributing toward tuition for a local scholar while enrolled at Fenwick. It’s wonderful to see these
students thrive at Fenwick – experiencing much of what we did many years ago.
Thank you for your many gifts to Bishop Fenwick. They make so much possible – with both student
scholarships and enhancement to programs and facilities. For those of you who have not recently
connected with the school, please do so. Our students will thank you. You will thank yourself.
Class of 2016 senior Gift
Each year the senior gift program at Bishop Fenwick asks seniors to help leave a
class legacy by making a donation in the amount of their class year – in this case
$20.16.
This year, the goal of the senior gift was to install a new, environmentally friendly
water filtering unit near the dining hall.
For the first time ever, there was 100 % participation in the program thanks to the
efforts of Senior Gift Chairs Michael Gallant and Paige Vigneron. The collective
actions reflect the Class of 2016’s commitment to their class and school
community.
During commencement, Gallant and Vigneron shared “Fenwick has had a
profound impact on our lives and the lives of all students, past and present. In
just four short years, we've learned the importance of living the Fenwick motto
of Goodness and Loyalty, and of never settling for anything less than our absolute
best. We know that we'll take all that we've learned in the classroom, on the
playing fields, on the stage and at our service experiences with us as we begin
the next step of our journey.”
Thank you, Class of 2016.
A Chat With Peter andruskiewicz, ‘75
Continued from page 6
crisscrossed the nation, and included the British Isles. The family logged 13,500 miles,
visiting 27 states and 13 National Parks. What an educational adventure!
Now retired and living in Fort Myers, Florida, Peter, ever mindful of the formative lessons
he learned at Fenwick about service to others, supports his alma mater’s community on
many levels. A generous and
thoughtful benefactor, in 2007,
Room 214 was dedicated as the
Peter and Danielle Andrusziewcz
Technology Learning Center. A
recent visit to the school allowed
him to meet students and witness
the Fenwick Mission – to educate
in a Christ-centered environment
– which is still as vibrant
today as when he was a student.
His support reflects the goodness
and loyalty that is the hallmark of
our alumni tradition. We are lucky
to have him.
Peter, a standout hockey player at Fenwick, is excited about the
upcoming season on the heels of last year’s Division 1 tournament
appearance. Photo: Stephen Young ’16
Under the direction of co-chairs Carl Menici ’69 P’09 and Michael Craffey
P’12, ’15, ‘18 along with their talented committee, over $56,000 was
raised to support scholarships and financial aid for deserving Bishop
Fenwick students thanks to the generosity of our golfers, sponsors
and donors. Our students are clearly the winners from their philanthropy!
The Fenwick Mission of providing excellence for every student
– regardless of his/her financial need – make the funds raised through
the Golf Classic a reality and for this we are most grateful.
