Fenwick Community, 

There have been numerous opportunities to reflect on the 

activities and accomplishments of the previous academic 

year. Among the special highlights were our varied 

activities during Catholic Schools Week, including the 

school-wide afternoon of service orchestrated by our 

campus minister; our involvement with the 250 Beds for 250 

Kids By Christmas, championed by Sister Linda Bessom, SND; 

the Moving Up Ceremony which included members of the 

Class of 2017 eloquently providing their unique insight, encouragement and counsel to 

the underclassmen; and the countless athletic events, performances, ceremonies, liturgies and 

inductions that highlighted the talents and accomplishments of our students. Collectively as a 

school community, we have much to be grateful for and proud of. 

While many familiar faces like Ed Kawczynski, Diane Eromin, Majella Sheehan, and Jim Palin 

continue to make a particular difference in the lives of our students, new ones have emerged 

eager to take a role that will be truly influential. At year-end, we bid a very fond farewell to 

Sr. Geraldine Burns, SND, who for 43 faith-filled years was a remarkable force. Her administrative 

competence, dedication to all things Fenwick, sense of fairness and equality, and tireless 

commitment to Catholic education are unrivaled. It was especially edifying to witness so many 

of her family join with Fenwick alumni, parents, students, trustees, current and former faculty and 

staff, and members of her religious community celebrate at her year-end reception. The remarks 

offered by the renowned Ralph LeDuc were quite memorable for those of us who have been 

privileged to work with her. The scholarship established in Sister Geraldine’s name will serve as 

a lasting legacy of dedication to young people. 

It is truly an honor for me to offer a message of thanks to all of Fenwick’s benefactors this past 

year. I am sincerely grateful to all of you – families, alumni, alumni families, grandparents, 

Board members, faculty and staff, foundations, and friends of Fenwick for your support and 

commitment. I am delighted to present our 2016-2017 Annual Report, which illustrates the spirit 

and growth of this wonderful educational community. Because of you, Fenwick’s tradition of 

excellence remains a vibrant part of the North Shore. Know that your generosity inspires 

intellectual growth, fosters life-long learning, nurtures religious values, creates a caring and

alumni ambassador Program 

For several years, Fenwick has recognized 

that its alumni engagement has not 

realized its potential and often focused on 

class reunions. As part of the institution’s 

strategic thinking and as a 2016-17 Board 

Institutional Advancement Committee 

goal, an Alumni Ambassador Program has 

been initiated to broaden its outreach.

“The program is not seen as a fundraising 

effort” said Mary G. Leary, Class of 1985, 

who is leading the recruitment initiative 

with fellow Board Member Arthur Makar, 

Class of 1968, “but rather as a way to 

engage Ambassadors as class agents, who 

will provide Fenwick with alumni news for 

its website, for other school publications 

and work with the school on class reunion 

and other alumni related activities.” One 

major goal of the program is to celebrate 

accomplishments of the many Fenwick 

alumni who are out in the world doing 

amazing things professionally, personally, 

and within their communities. A second 

goal is to share with alumni the exciting 

activities that are occurring on campus. A 

preliminary meeting of this group was held 

on March 11, attended by 22 alumni 

(representing each decade) who expressed 

an interest in becoming Ambassadors for 

their class or for a particular Fenwick 

activity that they were involved with as 

students, such as a sports team or 

dramatic arts. 

Our Alumni Ambassador program is 

happening at a particularly good time in 

Fenwick’s history for, simultaneously, the 

school is examining its overall fundraising 

strategy and recommendations will be 

provided later this year as they relate to the 

Institutional Advancement department’s 

direction. “Presumably the work of our 

Alumni Ambassadors will be integrated into 

the larger context of the school’s profile, 

building upon Fenwick’s robust enrollment 

growth and student achievement, all 

propelling Fenwick forward,” remarked 

Mr. Makar.

What does it mean to hold a tireless 

commitment to Catholic education? If you 

are among the many fortunate enough to 

spend time, however brief it may have 

been, with Sr. Geraldine Burns, SND, then 

you have the answer. 

The fact that the school has been here 58 

years and Sister Geraldine showed up for 

duty 43 of those years suggests that she 

had a lot to do with building that quality of 

unity and fellowship that thrives within 

these walls, across our athletic fields and 

out into the surrounding cities and towns.

Sr. Geraldine is the living embodiment of 

the value of discipline, the rewards that 

come with steady focus and the 

importance of strong character. Committed 

to her family and her religious order, a 

woman of integrity with a keen mind and 

a fair heart, Sister Geraldine has seen and 

dealt with more than a little of everything 

over the years. She took what came her

know the name of Sr. Geraldine Burns and 

long feel gratitude for her decades of 

dedication and love.

Hundreds of Fenwick’s community 

responded immediately. At a reception in 

her honor at Fenwick in June, upwards of 

$70,000 had already been raised; gifts 

continue to be received by the school 

reflecting the lasting impact Sr. Geraldine 

had upon Fenwick students.

continue her legacy and to help ensure 

that deserving students can take 

Across the long expanse of life, those of 

us eager to learn how to live to the fullest 

and be the best we can be, need to see 

people who demonstrate what it means to 

do the work we're meant to do and be the 

people others follow until they find 

themselves. Sister Geraldine is one of 

those people. And the most treasured 

part of Sister Geraldine's story is that she 

chose to share all that living, 12,000 days 

of it, with the students, faculty and staff of 

Bishop Fenwick High School.

Each year on the last day of senior classes, 

the school gathers together to wish the 

Seniors well at the “Senior Send Off.” In 

return, the Seniors offer advice to the 

under classman on the things that they have 

learned over their four years. The Class of 

2017 chose to offer their fellow crusaders 

10 challenges.

cool. It’s okay to act crazy and embarrass 

yourself, because I’ll tell you something, there 

are definitely other kids in the crowd that want

idea can lead to very big things if we find what 

we love and make it a big part of our lives.”

people who disagree with you, but it should 

never stop you from speaking. The 

community is made a better place when 

questions and debates are happening, 

whether it is about a school policy or a 

government policy.”

mistakes. At the moment these mistakes may 

seem bad but in the end there are always 

ways to make your situation better. Saint Julie 

Billiart, foundress of the Sisters of Notre 

Dame de Namur once said “To be simple is 

to be like a sunflower which follows all the 

movements of the sun and ever turns toward 

it” With that being said I encourage you to 

always aim to grow and to shine during your 

years at Fenwick in any way possible, just like 

a sunflower. I hope that we may all remain 

mindful of our blessings.”

world. Recent renovations, thanks to the 

generosity of our Auction 2017 Fund a Dream 

donors allows enhanced engagement for 

Fenwick students. Educational experts 

recognize the importance of furnishings 

when it comes to delivering to busy and 

distracted students all that is old and new in 

the world.

combined with a demonstration of respect for 

the authors and scholars who capture and 

present ideas for people who come after 

them demonstrate the wisdom of the 

O'Rourke Sisters almost 60 years ago.

Class Gift Tradition at Fenwick 

Class of 2017 achieves 100% 

The transition from senior in high school to alum is a rite of passage that we all 

looked forward to – it represents the beginning of the end of our high school time. 

The first step we took in that journey was by celebrating 100 days until Graduation 

with the traditional Senior Class Breakfast and kicking off our Senior Gift Program. 

The tradition of a Senior Class Gift is our way of “giving back.” Could we match the 

Class of ‘16’s record setting 100% participation? Our legacy was on the line. 

Senior gift is an annual event that lets us join our classmates and the students who 

came before us to leave our mark on Fenwick and lead the way for future Crusaders. 

You can look around the school and see what the classes before us have given — 

from chairs in the auditorium to the courtyard to the water bottle fountain. 

For our legacy we chose to help renovate the library in memory of our classmates 

father, Mr. Scott Hebert. Every time a student here at Fenwick or a visitor enters 

our library, they will see the plaque honoring the list of donors, including the Class 

of 2017 for Mr. Hebert. 

We asked each senior to donate $20.17 in honor of our graduation year. We called 

upon our classmates, and for the second year in a row they responded and 100% 

of the Class of 2017 participated in the Senior Class gift program. This shows our 

commitment to our class and to our school, and more than this, it shows the 

friendship and support among us. 

We are proud to be the newest and youngest alums

Faith in FenwiCk aUCtion 

The Faith in Fenwick Auction held at the Danversport Yacht Club 

enjoys a distinctive tradition that has been supported and 

enlivened by our generous parents, alumni, and community 

partners and is possible with the diligent efforts of a very dedicated 

committee. This year’s event led by our exceptional chairpersons, 

Dan Mahoney P’13 and Beth Fantozzi P’13, ’16, ‘19 offers credible 

proof that Bonitas and Fidelitas – Goodness and Loyalty – abounds 

throughout the Fenwick Family. Support for this year’s Fund a 

Dream – O’Rourke Library renovations which raised over $30,000.
