Explore…
Dorrigo
Some say Dorrigo is the Mid North
Coast’s best kept secret. This
friendly town is just half an hour
from Bellingen and situated on the
edge of the Great Dividing Range
escarpment, approximately 1,000
metres above sea level. Highlights are
the drive there via Waterfall Way, one
of Australia’s most scenic roads, and
the nearby rainforest walks, lookout
points, waterfalls, birds and wildlife.
On the east side of the town, the
Dorrigo plateau drops away into the
World Heritage-listed Gondwana
Rainforests of Dorrigo National
Park. To the west lies gently rolling
farmland.
RAILWAY MUSEUM
What’s in-a name?
There is continued debate about the origin of the name
Don Dorrigo, or as it is now more generally called, Dorrigo.
For many decades it was believed that explorer and settler
Major Edward Parke named the region after a Spanish
General named Don Dorrigo until a local researcher
suggested the Spanish General never existed.
The name Dorrigo is now more commonly thought to have
derived from the Aboriginal word, dondorrigo, meaning
“stringy-bark”.
Accessible and
Unforgettable
Dorrigo National Park
provides everyone the, even
those who are wheelchair
bound, the opportunity
to experience the unique
rainforest environment.
European settlement in Urunga
(Bellinger Heads) began in the
1840’s when the search for red
cedar extended up the coast from
the Macleay Valley. There was just a
natural outlet to the sea in those days
with the entrance being approximately
half a mile south of the present break
wall. It was not until 1909 that Bellinger
Heads was renamed Urunga. A
number of sawmills operated in the
area, with timber transported from
the mills to the wharfs at Urunga for
transport to Sydney and England.
There are still a number of older
buildings to see in Urunga and visitors
can pick up a Heritage Walk brochure
Welcome to Dorrigo
National Park
Dorrigo National Park
is one of the oldest
parks in New South
Wales and comprises nearly
12,000 hectares of diverse
forest and grassy plains and
is part of the Country of the
Gumbaynggirr Aboriginal
people. The park protects
the biological diversity and
pristine beauty of a remnant
sample of the extensive
rainforests that once covered
most of the Dorrigo Plateau.
In the mists of a distant past,
primitive rainforests grew in a
warmer, wetter world we call
Gondwana. As that landmass
drifted north and slowly
broke apart, these Gondwana
rainforests became our most
visible living link with the
ancient, pre-human world - an
irreplaceable record of life
on our planet. They were the
cradle for the evolution of
most of Australia’s modern
plant and animal species
and therefore provide a
window into both the past and
the future.
Protecting a precious area
of this Gondwana rainforest,
Dorrigo National Park is
perched on the dramatic
eastern escarpment near the
town of Dorrigo. By road, it
is 60 kilometres south-west
of Coffs Harbour and 125
kilometres east of Armidale.
The park’s Skywalk and
boardwalks make it one of
Australia’s most accessible
World Heritage sites.
The plants and wildlife of
Dorrigo National Park include
many rare and threatened
species found in few other
places in the world. These
include the rarely sighted
spotted-tailed quoll, the
red-legged pademelon, the
brush-tailed phascogale
and the long-nosed potoroo.
The most commonly seen
mammals are pademelons,
wallabies and possums.
The rainforest is also a bird
watchers’ paradise with
the sub-tropical rainforest
providing rich habitat for
ground-dwelling birds that
feed on the abundant animal
life within the leaf litter. Fruitfeeding
birds occupy the
canopy of the rainforest, often
undertaking long-distance or
local migrations to ensure a
year-round food supply.
Perhaps one of the most
popular birds in the park is
the superb lyrebird fooling
visitors by mimicking many
other birds and offering a
spectacular courtship display
for those lucky enough to
encounter this treat.
The gateway to the park
is the Dorrigo Rainforest
Centre providing easy access
both to the Skywalk and the
start of tracks leading to the
rainforest and spectacular
waterfalls. Travellers will find
helpful staff at the information
counter, in-depth displays in
the exhibition space and a
rich source of literature for
sale in the shop.
Whether you’re a long-term
local or a visitor to our patch,
make sure you take the
time to explore this ancient
rainforest wonderland. You
won’t be disappointed.
Great produce is our thing
The Bellingen Shire Local Food Trail is an inspiring, online guideshowcasing the
local farmers, producers and suppliers in the region. Follow the guide to uncover
the unique food available in the area such as Biodynamic Agriculture Australia,
Bellopy Organic Market,
The Bellingen Brewery and Blackwood Apple Farm.
The guide is aimed at increasing the awareness and
appreciation of local food sources and recognises the
excellent work done by community groups creating
local markets, community gardens, edible streetscapes
and saving seeds. Buying local means that we are
reducing our reliance on fossil fuel transport and have
the freshest and most nutritious food available.
An iconic local brand
Chai Tea is a 20 year old, wholly
Australian owned company. Located
deep in the forest, on a community/
land sharing co-operative in the
Bellingen Shire. They operate
completely “off the grid”. What this
means is that not only is the Chai
Tea Co. run exclusively on solar
power, but so too are the homes of
all the members of the team.
For the last twenty years the Chai
Shed has operated in the same
way it does today; solely on the
ecologically safe, renewable
resources of solar power and
human energy. This makes the Chai
Tea Co. an innovator, both in our
commitment to the Environment and
in bringing Chai, and the authentic
flavours of India to Australia.
Please come and visit us. A Bellingen tradition for over 15 years.
You will be made to feel very welcome!
From little things...
Bellingen Shire is a trove of wonderful homemade success stories. The ethos for many local businesses is to support
community and to foster best practice environmental standards. Kombu Wholefoods and Amelia Franklin Fairtrade Coffee
are two examples of locals leading the way.
Kombu Wholefoods
A decade ago Kev and Lowanna Doye began the thriving
Bellingen-based organic grocery and healthy living store,
Kombu Wholefoods. “We live in an area blessed with almost
ideal growing conditions, which means all of us on the Mid
North Coast should be able to enjoy abundant and affordable
fresh local produce,” Kev said.
“The Bellingen Shire, in particular, is almost unique in that it
runs from the coast, through subtropical valleys and then up
onto the colder tablelands. That diversity gives us not only a
wide range of produce but also an extended growing season.”
Kombu stocks a wide range of chemical free and organic local
produce and also has a dedicated produce coordinator to
ensure a range of the best local and regional commodities are
always available.
Lindsay’s Oyster Barn & Seafood
John Lindsay has been growing oysters on the beautiful
Bellingen River for over 30 years and is now the largest
supplier of locally grown, delicious oysters on the Coffs
Coast. John is a local character, with great stories to share.
The family business has developed an excellent reputation
for quality and price.
The rooms of yesteryear have been
combined to create large hotel suites
sooth guests resting from the region’s
many outdoor activities.
So put your feet up at the Heritage
Hotel Dorrigo after a day in and around
Dorrigo and enjoy fabulous food at
reasonable prices. Or why not stay for a
while?
There’s no better base to
explore the wonders of the
nine national parks on
the Dorrigo Plateau
and the charm of the
township than the
Heritage Hotel Dorrigo.
* TripAdvisor, June 2016
What guests tell tripadviser.com.au
about Heritage Hotel Motel Dorrigo:
“This is the best pub accommodation
I have ever stayed in!”
“Our verandah room was huge with two
sets of doors opening onto the wide verandah
overlooking the main centre of this
quaint country town. The room was clean
and warm as were the public areas. Good
meals are provided in the bistro at reasonable
prices. A continental breakfast was
included in the room tariff. I recommend a
night or longer at this hotel for the experience
of a beautiful little hinterland town.”
“Very spacious hotel suite for our family of
five. Comfy beds, nice bathroom. Bistro
food was delicious, thanks Chef. We
stopped here on our way to Tamworth,
visited the waterfalls on the way.”
When Hotel Dorrigo was opened in
1925 it was renowned as the most
modern country hotel in NSW.
Today guests are welcomed by the
architectural charm and fit-out, and
warmed by the comfort and modern
amenity of its accommodation.
You’ll find the Heritage Hotel Dorrigo’s
accommodation and service as comforting
as a warm embrace.
