Gardening tips for mid-late Winter by Phoenix Gardening If you’ve managed to make an early start on your winter jobs mid - winter is a time for more indoor jobs. So you can pick the sunnier days to venture outside. Indoor jobs then, well we can order plants and bulbs and write up some labels replacing any faded ones, or just give it a tidy up. You can also think about any improvements you’d like to make in your garden, look at what’s worked and what hasn’t, maybe you’d like to add some or more seasonal colour. What can we do outside? Force rhubarb, if you have some plants in the greenhouse or conservatory give them a weekly check and take off any dead leaves. If you have a pond and it starts to ice over keep a patch of water open. One way to do this is use a pan of boiling water and melt a hole in the ice. One person I knew used to put a football in the pond to keep a nice circle open. Late winter if you haven’t got that digging done by now better finish it off. Mind you on some heavy wet clays and a hard frost you could find it rock hard. One reason why on heavy soils it’s good to get in early, if it’s not too wet. On the veg garden you can apply manure or fertilisers if appropriate, on beds and borders you can put down a layer of mulch with some feed. Both let the winter gradually take the organic matter into the soil along with the goodness ready for the spring. Mid - Late winter is also a good time to sow bedding plants for summer for a lot of tender plants it would be too early to sow now even indoors as they would come on too fast but those that need a longer growing period like Begonia’s should be fine.
