Learning for Work 

Our learning for work courses will 

help you build on existing skills and 

knowledge to help you progress in 

the work place. 

Leicester Adult Skills and Learning Service receives a subsidy for most of 

its provision from the Skills Funding Agency (SFA) and our fees policy is 

reviewed annually to ensure compliance with any variations in the funding 

regulations and to support the service’s objectives, as outlined in the 

strategic plan. 

Our tuition fees for qualification courses are aligned to the SFA rates for 

qualifications. 

Fees for qualification courses are calculated based on eligibility and 

circumstances of a learner on the first day of their course. Fees are 

charged under three bands: 

Fee 1: The full fee to be paid by the learner or through a successful 

application for an Advanced Learner Loan (see panel) 

Fee 2: 50% reduction. 50% cost of the course paid by the learner 50% by 

the SFA 

FREE: 100% costs of the course paid by SFA 

The following table shows tuition fee categories for learners who are 

eligible for SFA funded provision or Advanced Learning Loans. Any learner 

who does not meet the eligibility criteria will have to pay the full cost of 

the course.

Advanced Learning Loans 

You can apply for an Advanced 

Learning Loan to help with the 

costs of a course at a college 

or training provider if you’re 19 

or older. 

The course must be an eligible 

Level 3 or 4 course.

Workclubs and Careers Advice 

As part of the Leicester to Work strategy, Leicester Adult Skills and Learning Service offers Workclubs. These are run 

on a weekly basis at various settings across the city. Learners work towards learning outcomes to develop the skills 

required to be able to effectively and independently search for work, including: 

• Searching and applying for jobs using the Internet 

• Setting up and using a Universal Jobmatch account 

• Creating or updating a CV 

• Completing paper application forms 

• Identifying skills and training needed to achieve goals 

• Using email to apply for jobs 

• Understanding the content of a CV 

• Composing and producing a covering letter 

• Identifying realistic work opportunities

Learning for life courses give you 

the basic knowledge and skills in 

English and maths that you will need for 

any job or activity you choose to do. On 

all our courses you will have the opportunity 

to gain a qualification. 

Learning for Life 

English and Maths 

We have courses for all levels from beginners (Pre-Entry) to more advanced 

(Level 2 and GCSE). Our courses will help you to: 

• improve your speaking and listening skills 

• become more confident with your reading, writing and maths 

• develop those skills you need to get a job or help your children 

We offer morning, afternoon and evening classes in a community setting near 

you. All our classes are taught by experienced and qualified teachers. 

Most courses run twice-a-week for 16 weeks and combine Cambridge 

Progression Units and Functional Skills to help you develop your skills. We also 

run once-a-week courses including a flexible roll-on programme and GCSE 

English and maths evening classes. 

We also have a short course designed for learners with dyslexia which explores 

using different learning styles and resources to develop confidence with their 

English and maths skills. 

ENGLISH AND MATHS COURSES ARE FREE 

ESOL (English for Speakers 

of Other Languages) 

English classes for people whose first language 

is not English. 

Our ESOL courses will help you to: 

• improve your speaking and listening 

• develop your reading and writing in English 

• prepare for work in the future 

• learn about life in the UK 

We have ESOL courses for all levels from 

beginners to advanced. We offer morning, 

afternoon and evening classes in a 

community setting near you. Our classes 

are fun, lively and multicultural. All our 

classes are taught by highly experienced 

and well qualified teachers. 

How to Enrol 

Before you join our English, Maths or 

ESOL courses, you will need to come 

and talk to one of our tutors. 

The tutor will talk to you and ask you 

to do some English and / or maths or 

reading and writing activities to find 

out your level and give advice about 

the best class for you.

Thursday at Leicester Adult Education

ESOL Interviews: 

• On the day of the assessment please 

bring your passport and ID Card. 

• ESOL classes are not automatically 

free, but many learners are eligible for 

free courses or reduced fees. Please 

bring any proof of benefits and/ or 

method of payment with you on the day 

of your assessment. In some cases we 

can arrange for you to pay the fees in 

instalments. 

• At the assessment you will be told 

which level you need to study and 

agree a timetable.

REMIT offers community education to adults in Leicester and Leicestershire 

who experience severe and enduring mental health problems. Our main 

base is at the Leicester Adult Education College in the city centre, but we 

have some courses in other venues. The city centre is easily accessed by 

public transport, and free parking is available at community settings; the 

Brite Centre in Braunstone, Fosse Community Centre on Mantle Road and 

at Aylestone Leisure Centre. 

Like any other Adult Education provider, REMIT offers a range of courses 

every week, most of which last for two hours. Most courses are non-accredited, but learners are encouraged to 

progress onto other courses including those which lead to qualifications.

The Leicester People’s Photographic Gallery is a unique resource for 

photographers of all abilities. 

The LPPG is an open and inclusive creative community, welcoming all 

to exhibit or just look around the gallery. We have at least two annual 

exhibitions for our members to display their own work. 

Membership is £10 per year (£5 for concessions). This gives you discounts
