hen Paul Caldwell started Confederate Stills<br />

of Alabama, he saw the venture as more than<br />

Wthe manufacture of distillery equipment. It also<br />

gave him an opportunity to pay tribute to his heritage.<br />

“One of the things that got me intrigued about<br />

distillery was my great-granddaddy’s discharge papers<br />

from a prisoner of war camp in Illinois,” the Winterboro<br />

native said. “His name was Henry Jackson Davis. He<br />

was my grandmother’s daddy. I’ve been to his grave<br />

down around Alexander City. He died in 1923 or 24.”<br />

Davis walked home from the Union internment<br />

camp, where he’d been imprisoned as a member of the<br />
