Adventure Hot Air Ballooning in Goa

There is nothing quite like the uplifting 

sensation of a hot air balloon ride. The 

gentle sway of the balloon borne upon 

the winds, with a panorama, a bird’s eye 

view surroundings of Goa is an amazing 

experience. The 360 degree field of vision 

and the weightless sensation of being lifted 

off your feet, can only be experienced in a 

hot air balloon. 

A fantastic way to experience air balloon 

flight, and a great adventure that is not in 

the least bit physically demanding, hot air 

balloon rides are now available to tourists 

in Goa. 

The ticket for the air ballooning ride would 

be priced at around Rs 9,500 per head during 

weekdays and Rs.9,900 on weekends (pricing 

may change). 

You can look forward to a 2 hours experience 

of the hot air ballooning which includes 

the greeting and registration, briefing by 

your pilot, invitation to help with balloon 

inflation, around an hour’s flight in hot air 

balloon, presentation of certificate signed 

by your pilot (on request), invitation to 

assist with the deflation of the balloon, and 

transport back to your original launch site. 

Hot air ballooning in Goa is completely 

weather dependent. Balloon flights may be 

delayed or cancelled if the conditions are 

unsafe for flying. A decision to delay flights 

or cancel them will only be made by the crew 

at 6.00 am each morning. To find out if the 

balloons are flying, guests with confirmed 

bookings will be informed well in advance. 

The most important aspects of the weather 

are that there must be wind speeds of less 

than 12 miles per hour, reasonable visibility, 

a stable atmosphere and no rain or snow. 

Balloons take between 15-30 minutes to 

inflate, depending on their size. Inflation 

usually commences at 6.15 am with the 

majority of the balloons launched prior to 

7.00 am. The early bird catches the worm. 

Don’t forget your camera to capture all the 

stunning balloons. Bring cash if you wish 

to purchase souvenirs at the balloon field. 

Bring along warm clothing for possible 

chilly mornings. Bringing pets to the event is 

discouraged.

THE STORY OF 

BAGA & 

CALANGUTE

This is a collection of tales from the Baga and 

Calangute area. 

My furthest recollection of Calangute and Baga 

is of me as an eleven year old and an unspoiled 

paradise with beautiful golden sand and tall 

swaying palm tress amidst the warm Sea 

breeze that blasted inland from an incredibly 

blue Arabian Sea. Walking down to to the 

seashore in the morning and looking at all the 

small fishing canoes coming home from a hard 

nights fishing and then strong incredibly built 

fishermen hauling their boats onto the sea 

shore with the aid of black cashew fruit sap 

coated wooden logs and some hard shoving. 

The fresh mackerel actually had a perfume 

like smell unlike i've ever smelled elsewhere 

which I vividly recount. Quite often, i was 

given a few fish to take home, as appreciation 

for my efforts. Watching the sun slowly rise as 

I walked home was an incredible experience 

and later on in life during my party organising 

days, this scene would be something I would 

wait for before finally turning the music off! 

Baga and Calangute were then home to 

the "Flower Power" generation. People 

from Western Europe and the Americas 

flocked here to experience a bit of Nirvana in 

Paradise. The local dope as well as imported 

hallucinogens of various sorts only added to the 

overall experience. It really was quite normal to 

see Chillums and other strange smoking pots 

adorn various balconies along the coast line. 

Nudism was the norm on the beaches and an air 

of absolute Freedom wafted through the whole 

surreal scene. 

The full moon Parties were just incredible and 

used to be the place to go to once every lunar 

month. There were various hippie hangouts 

like Titos in Baga and St Anthony's where one 

could get info on the latest and most happening 

parties. Some of these places later evolved into 

today's most popular discotheques and clubs. 

Experiencing a beach party with tiny bonfires 

lighting up different areas of the sand and 

yet on a beach engulfed by this gorgeous full 

moon still brings back beautiful memories 

of a Paradise now lost. There were various 

travelling troupes from Western Europe and 

America who came to Goa and performed and 

then went back home and turned the music 

world upside down! Legends like The Beatles, 

The Who, Dire Straits, Six Finger Eddy, Goa Gil 

and many others all passed through and some 

even stayed. The Worlds top actors, actresses 

and Models like Richard Gere, Kate Moss, Jade 

Jagger, Matt Damon etc have all visited local 

clubs like Mambos and Titos as have all the top 

Bollywood Stars. 

The one troupe that left a lasting impression was 

the Amsterdam Balloon Company. These were 

a group of exceptionally gifted Troubadors who 

travelled by Bus through Iran and Afghanistan 

and into India in the early 80's. This group 

probably did the most for Goan Tourism by 

putting Goa on the international Party map. 

Their concerts and events in the early 80's were 

the stuff of legends. I remember watching this 

incredible surreal scene of a group of canoe 

borne 12 foot Vikings in flowing robes alighting 

onshore and then walking up the beach with 

their torches of fire and beginning a night of 

Reverie. There was music, rendition of Poetry, 

plays , Joke telling and a lot of smoking, alcohol 

and dancing till the dawn. Then, the creme de 

la creme was the setting alight of this huge hot 

air paper balloon which then gloriously rose 

into the early dawn sky , and then sailed out 

over the calm Arabian sea just before Sunrise. 

One of the most famous Musicians to come out 

of this festival was Remo Fernandes- India's top 

Pop Star. 

I remember the very day trouble began to brew 

in Paradise. I was sitting in the Balcony of my 

beach restaurant and I saw this government 

vehicle draw up and start digging holes and 

then hoisted an electricity pole and then 

another and another and then strung a few ugly 

electric cables right across my field of view. 

My beautiful beach view was now violated and 

I was so aghast at this violation of my picture 

perfect post card like view that this moment 

sort of burned itself into my memory. There 

was worse to come however and we then learned 

that Goa was finally going to be connected to the 

Indian mainland by Train. Goans across Goa 

were traumatised as they felt they were going 

to be flooded by mainlanders. Weird conspiracy 

theories were also floated which only added to 

the whole paranoia and this period in our history 

was very unsettling. Now, Goans have learned 

to live with and appreciate the mainlanders, but 

not without some apprehensions. 

The turning Point in Goa's tourism 

transformation tale came in the year 2000. 

Everyone who was anyone in India wanted to 

be in Goa that year. India itself had begun to 

boom economically and its citizens , charged 

up with ability to splurge , were on the move. 

Goa attracted them like no other place did. This 

was where they could be free of their local social 

norms and even parents. This was a modern 

India unlike any the Goans had ever seen. These 

Indians partied just as hard as any other tourist 

and wanted the same lifestyle as many of the 

other foreign tourists. Today, Indian tourism is 

the life and blood of Goan tourism and we are 

overrun. There's loads of Garbage and uncouth 

behaviour from all. Freedoms we once had are 

now stifled by encroaching Indian norms and 

behaviours and ideas that were once accepted 

are now slowly becoming taboo. However- Life 

in Goa goes on and time brings new Challenges 

as well as opportunities and I am sure we will 

eventually overcome this phase. 

The author has lived along the coastal belt all 

his life and his father- Tito - was the Pioneer of 

Goan Tourism.

Gionee unveils P7 smartphone at Rs 9,999 

The smartphone has 16GB internal memory, expandable up to 128GB, runs on 

Amigo 3.2 user interface on top of Android 6.0 Lollipop operating system and houses 

2300 mAh battery. (Gionee Twitter) 

Extending its successful P series, Chinese smartphone maker Gionee on Monday 

launched its P7 smartphone at Rs 9,999 in India. The budget-friendly smartphone 

features a 5-inch HD IPS display and supports VoLTE and CDMA technology. “Our 

latest smartphone Gionee P7 is a figure of strength and performance,” said Deepika 

Singh, Director, Marketing Communications, Gionee India, in a statement. 

The device runs on quad core 1.3GHz processor integrated with 2GB of RAM, sports 

5MP secondary camera with “screen flash”, 8MP primary camera and has several 

in-built features like text recognition in pictures, GIF creator and intelligent photo 

crop. 

The smartphone has 16GB internal memory, expandable up to 128GB, runs on

Xiaomi Mi’s latest is an electric scooter which can fold in 3 seconds 

The Xiaomi Mi electric scooter has been priced at CNY 1999, which is 

around Rs 19,500. It will be available in China from December 15. 

Chinese tech major Xiaomi has launched its Mi electric scooter. The 

company has introduced it on MiJia crowdfunding platform. The electric 

scooter will be available only in China as of now and it has a very different 

foldable design. The scooter has been priced at CNY 1999, which is around 

Rs 19,500. It will be available in China from December 15. The Xiaomi Mi 

electric scooter is said to have been created by using an aircraft-grade 

aluminium and weighs 12.5 kilogrammes. 

The most interesting and notable feature in the electric scooter is that it 

is foldable. Just press a button and, according to the company, the scooter 

will fold itself within 3 seconds making it much quicker and easier to store. 

The Xiaomi Mi electric scooter reaches a top speed of 25 kilometres per 

hour. The device features an LG 1850 Ev-lithium ion battery which has a 

capacity of 280Wh and can provide and instantaneous high power of up to 

500 watts. The device has a dual braking system. While the back wheel has 

a mechanical disc brake, the front wheel has the E-ABS anti-lock system. 

There is another interesting feature in the electric scooter which is called 

the Kinetic Energy recovery system. This feature converts the kinetic 

energy, that is the energy gained from speed to electric energy which 

eventually results in better battery life. This is not where the features end. 

Xiaomi launched its self-balancing and folding Mi Electric Scooter 

The Mi electric scooter is smart and can be ‘friends’ with a smartphone. 

Consumers to buy a Mi electric scooter will be able to pair it with an app. 

The app is directed towards understanding the cycling habits by reading 

the riding speed and battery life among other things. 

Google’s amazing new keyboard for iPhone now available for Android 

Google Gboard: The new updated keyboard will 

have functionalities like an integrated search, 

tool for emoji search and a few other shortcuts. 

Google’s popular new keyboard called 

the Gboard is now available for Android 

smartphone users too. This feature was earlier 

available only for Apple iOS users. According 

to reports in 9to5 Google and Android Police, 

Google is updating its Keyboard and will 

reportedly add features from the Gboard. The 

new updated keyboard will have functionalities 

like an integrated search, tool for emoji search 

and a few other shortcuts. As of now these are 

only available as Android application package 

(APK) from the company and does not contain 

any details on the release. But reportedly this 

will be a part of Google Play Store soon. Android 

Police, for now, keeps adding the new features 

on the list which are expected. 

GBoard is an interesting feature from Google 

which surprisingly works better on Apple iOS 

devices than on its own Android systems. This 

is even more perplexing,as Apple puts limits

on third party applications. Google, however, 

had promised the keyboard on Android but it 

has been almost half a year. The third-party 

keyboard for iOS made Google search engine 

a part of the interface which is used most by 

the consumer. The keyboard had come to the 

iOS following months of development. When 

it came, it offered a lot of new features which 

were not a part of the iOS keyboard, and that 

distinguishing feature became a hit among 

Apple device users. 

The Google keyboard for iOS used gesture-based 

typing. The users could slide their fingers on the 

screen and Google could guess related words. A 

simple press on the Google logo button would 

let users access the famous web search. The 

keyboard brought particular buttons for images 

and GIF-based searches. These features are 

powered by Google’s own image search. Even 

visually, Google’s keyboard is different from 

the normal Android keyboard. The Android 

keyboard does not have text or picture-based 

searching. 

This keyboard feature was designed to improve 

the number of searches on Google’s website on 

iOS devices. Google has always had a monopoly 

on the online search system, but most of it has 

been PC-based, while it struggled a bit with 

mobile based search.

Моя чудесная жизнь в Гоа. 

Добрый день, меня зовут Диана. Хочу 

поведать вам свою историю жизни в 

райском уголке Гоа. 

Приехала я из далекой России, из городагероя 

Смоленска. В 2006 году окончила 

санкт –петербургскую академию 

управления, экономики и права. С самого 

детства я мечтала жить за границей. 

А во время учёбы, поставила себе цель 

– уехать и жить в теплых краях. И так 

как я- человек целеустремленный и 

общительный, в скором времени моя 

мечта начала сбываться.. 

Первый и колоссальный опыт работы не 

на родной земле, я получила в Турции, где 

я прожила 4 сезона. С отличием окончила 

курсы турецкого языка в Анталии, а также 

занималась изучением английского языка. 

Потом в моей жизни был Таиланд, с 

его экзотической культурой, Греция – 

спокойная и тихая. 

И вот настал тот час, когда мне предложили 

работу в Индии, а именно в Гоа. С детства 

я любила индийские фильмы, такие 

колоритные и восхитительные, поэтому, 

не раздумывая, отправилась покорять 

новую страну. 

Первая неделя нахождения в Индии 

вызывала во мне противоречивые чувства. 

Был страх, стресс, шок, а потом наступила 

любовь к этому замечательному месту. И 

каждый день эта любовь росла и крепла. 

Местные жители так и говорят – ты либо 

любишь это место, либо нет, третьего не 

дано.. 

С 2013 года и по сей день, я работаю в Гоа. 

И эти 3 года – самые лучшие годы работы 

за границей! 

Я работаю в туристической компании 

«Caper Travel», которая принимает русских 

гостей. Каждый день я встречаюсь с 

новыми людьми, общаюсь с ними, делюсь 

впечатлениями о жизни в Гоа. 

Самый часто задаваемый вопрос от 

туристов: “ А где лучше жить на севере или 

на юге?” Скажу вам так, в начале своей 

карьеры в Гоа я жила на юге. Мне там очень 

нравилось - хорошие пляжи, спокойный 

отдых, дорогие отели, много католических 

церквей. Но когда я приехала на север, то 

сделала вывод- после северного Гоа на юг 

я уже не вернусь. 

Для некоторых Гоа- это место встречи с 

романтикой 60-х, свободной и спокойной 

жизнью. Для меня Гоа - это самые 

красивые закаты на берегу моря и место 

исполнения желаний. 

Здесь можно встретить почти все слои 

населения - от офисных работников, 

приехавших прятаться от стресса, до 

молодых людей, бежавших от скуки; от 

еврейских йогов, приехавших повышать 

квалификацию, до парочек с мечтами о 

романтических прогулках на пляже. 

Гоа – это свобода выбора. С одной стороны, 

на юге- роскошные отели на любой вкус, 

а с другой стороны, на севере- клубы, 

рестораны и тусовки. 

Когда речь заходит о комфорте, а 

именно о комфортном жилье, то 

людям, предпочитающим спокойный и 

размеренный отдых, лучше отправится 

на юг. Там отели высочайшего уровня. В 

них вы сможете насладиться сервисом 

и полным уединением, так как отели 

расположены обособленно, без сильно 

развитой инфраструктуры вокруг. 

Северный Гоа зовет тех, кого манит 

колорит Индии. Здесь тоже огромное 

количество больших и маленьких гостиниц. 

Поэтому иностранцы не понаслышке могут 

оценить весь колорит и разнообразие этой 

стороны штата. И окружающая среда 

значительно разнообразнее, чем на юге. 

Здесь, на севере, совершенно другой 

взгляд на мир, на то, что его окружает. 

Думается и дышится здесь совсем подругому, 

с особым шармом. Люди здесь 

дружелюбные и бесконфликтные. 

В свободное от работы время я люблю 

отдыхать на пляже. Близкие и поистине 

любимые пляжи - это Ashvem Beach и 

Morjim Beach. Это спокойные пляжи с 

широкой полосой золотистого песка. 

Любимое место отдыха русских туристов. 

Кстати, Morjim Beach в простонародье 

называют «Индийская рублёвка». Также 

здесь часто можно увидеть влюбленные 

парочки, провожающие закат. 

Я тоже люблю закаты. Здесь они особенно 

красивы и собирают на берегу большое 

количество народу, как местного, так и 

отдыхающего. Люди рассаживаются в 

прибрежных кафешках, сидят на песке 

или стоят на берегу, и все зачарованно 

наблюдают этот процесс. 

В северном Гоа много ночных 

клубов. Ночная жизнь здесь очень 

интересная. Самые любимые 

места для меня - ресторан Титос 

и клуб Мамбо. 

Ресторан Титос- это место, где 

вы на самом деле наслаждаетесь 

вкусом идеальной кухни. Всегда 

качественные напитки, вкусная 

еда и свежие морепродукты. 

Приветливый персонал и 

комфортная 

обстановка, 

заставляют возвращаться 

вновь и вновь в это заведение. 

Место подходит, как для 

большой компании, так и для 

романтического ужина вдвоем. 

Здесь можно посмотреть 

интересное шоу и послушать 

живую музыку. Поистине 

незабываемая атмосфера. 

Клуб «Мамбо»...Это место- мой второй дом. 

Контингент отличный, зажигательная 

музыка и самые вкусные коктейли. Все 

праздники я праздную именно здесь 

и всегда остаюсь довольна. Сервис и 

качество на все 100%. 

Уже декабрь, а это значит скоро Новый 

год!! И у меня конечно же не возникло даже 

вопроса, где его отметить. Прошлый Новый 

год был незабываемый. Сногсшибательная 

вечеринка под открытым небом, самые 

лучшие ди-джеи, море удовольствия 

и позитива. Этот Новый год я также 

отпраздную со своими друзьями в «Титос» 

и «Мамбо», и вам советую посетить 

это замечательное место. Атмосфера 

праздника на протяжении всей ночи – 

гарантирована! 

За приятное времяпрепровождения гостей 

отвечают два замечательных менеджера- 

Ashwin Gaonkar и Lewellyn Rodrigues. Ну 

а создатели этих заведений- настоящие

"Buddha in the City"

MOG Sundays is pleased to welcome psychiatrist, 

integrative medicine specialist and writer, Dr. Shyam 

Bhat, at 11 AM on 18 December. 

He will deliver a talk on Buddha in the City - the 

physiological and psychological benefits of meditation as a 

means of finding peace and clarity against the backdrop of 

technologically expedited urban lifestyles. 

Often named a pioneer of integrative medicine, Dr. 

Bhat is a popular public speaker at schools, colleges and 

important platforms such as Tedx. He has made several TV 

appearances, notably, sitting alongside Deepika Padukone 

during her candid interview with Barkha Dutt of NDTV. 

Padukone's brave and vulnerable testament of her struggle 

with depression and anxiety paired with Dr. Bhat's empathy 

and advice is now broadly regarded as a significant stride 

towards overturning stigma surrounding mental health. 

Dr. Bhat continues to write and speak on interconnections between the physical and emotional spheres to promote psycho-social intelligence in 

communities across the nation. 

He is the recipient of the Norris Brookens Award, a member of Alpha Omega Alpha that recognizes the highest ideals in the profession of medicine 

and a trustee of the Live, Love, Laugh Foundation founded by Deepika Padukone. He is widely published including being featured in The American

The Police Recruit Interview Question 

A new recruit police officer had almost finished his interview, 

and the interviewer asked him the last question which was: 

“You are on duty. A car crashes in the middle of the road with 

two people inside the car, the two people are critically injured 

and the car is badly damaged. 

The ambulance arrives, but it is going too fast and crashes 

into the damaged car. The car blows up and causes the ambulance 

to flip on its side. 

A passer-by, while walking on the sidewalk is toppled, by the 

force of the explosion, into the river beside the road. Unfortunately 

he cannot swim and is drowning in the river. 

Another man runs out of a house screaming, and shouts that 

his wife is pregnant and about to have her baby any second 

now. 

“What would you do in this situation”, the interviewer asked? 

The recruit looks around the office and thinks for a while... he 

replies, “I’d take off my uniform and act like I am part of the 

crowd”!

asked Rakesh Sharma how India looks from space, to which he 

replied, ‘Saare Jahan Se Acha’. So they decided it will be an apt title 

for this film. 

Rakesh Sharma was the first Indian, who traveled in space. Aamir 

will start shooting for this film after completing Thugs Of Hindostan. 

The 51-year old actor is currently gearing up for the release of his 

upcoming biographical sports drama Dangal, which is set to hit the

to acquire local content

big Bollywood studios

T-Series. These tie-ups also

for many titles. Amazon 

India said in an online 

post on the website, “We

The consumer will be able 

to set up Prime Video on

Samsung & Tesla 

tie-up to make selfdriving 

cars: report 

Samsung and Tesla signed a contract in relation to 

ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) foundry. 

ASIC foundry reportedly is a place where firm design, 

manufactures semiconductors according to the 

customer needs and as of now, it is Elon Musk’s Tesla. 

Global electronics giant Samsung is reportedly going to 

provide semiconductors to Elon Musk’s Tesla Motors. 

According to South Korea’s Electronic Times, anonymous 

sources have reported that Samsung will make chips for 

electric car maker Tesla, in order to manufacture selfdriving 

vehicles. Samsung in an attempt to promote new 

areas of growth has reportedly been making efforts to 

boost the automobile sector sales using components like 

semiconductors and displays. The South Korean company 

has said last month that it will buy Harman International 

Industries for $8 billion with an aim to build itself in the 

auto sector. 

According to the Electronics Times report, Samsung and 

Tesla signed a contract in relation to ASIC (Application- 

Specific Integrated Circuit) foundry. ASIC foundry 

reportedly is a place where firm design, manufactures 

semiconductors according to the customer needs and as of 

now, it is Elon Musk’s Tesla. Tesla has also been receiving 

Artificial Intelligence chips from NVIDIA to develop selfdriving

either Samsung or Tesla as of now. 

Tesla has announced that it is planning to begin shipping 

of fully capable autonomous cars, and therefore the plan 

to build its own chips in partnership with Samsung makes 

a lot of sense. According to Tesla’s announcement all the 

electric cars which will roll out of Tesla (including the 

Model 3) will be incorporated into the hardware necessary 

for fully capable self-driving in the future. Tesla in a blog, 

said, “Fully autonomy will enable a Tesla to be substantially 

safer than a human driver, lower the financial cost of 

transportation for those who own a car and provide lowcost 

on-demand mobility for those who do not.” 

According to reports, the self-driving cars will have the 

latest computer which could have the computing power of 

40 computers which are present in the previous generation 

of Tesla cars. These vehicles will feature 8 surround 

cameras which will enable 360-degree visibility, 12 new 

ultrasonic sensors and a radar.

WhatsApp reveals that it's now blocking 

these popular smartphones in 2017 

There was some bad news coming to some 

WhatsApp users at the end of this month. 

The world's most popular messaging 

service had said that numerous devices 

including BlackBerry, Nokia and some 

Android phones would face a permanent 

block from the app. 

However, WhatsApp now seems to have 

had a change of heart. In a recent update 

to firm's blog they are now stating: "We 

are extending support for BlackBerry 

OS, BlackBerry 10, Nokia S40 and Nokia 

Symbian S60 until June 30, 2017." 

This will come as a huge relief to many 

BlackBerry owners who looked like they'd 

soon need to switch to the lastest Android 

or Apple smartphones. Sadly, not everyone 

will be so happy as some phones will still 

lose support in a few weeks time. These 

include: Android 2.1 and Android 2.2, 

Windows Phone 7 and iPhone 3GS/iOS 6. 

WhatsApp understands the news won't 

go down well for many users saying: 

"While these mobile devices have been an 

important part of our story, they don't offer 

the kind of capabilities we need to expand 

our app's features in the future. 

"This was a tough decision for us to make, 

but the right one in order to give people 

better ways to keep in touch with friends, 

family, and loved ones using WhatsApp.

devices, we recommend upgrading to a

more popular than ever, topping the iOS

has just revealed its yearly iTunes and 

App Store download figures and WhatsApp

people with 42 billion messages and 250 

million videos sent every day. Along with

Amazon completes first Prime Air drone 

delivery 

Amazon has completed its first customer 

delivery by drone. 

The company made the used its Prime Air 

service for the first time to deliver goods to a 

customer in Cambridgeshire on December 

7. Amazon founder and chief executive Jeff 

Bezos confirmed the delivery in a tweet. 

Amazon said a new private 

trial – also in the UK – will 

now deliver packages up 

to 2.3 kg in weight in 30 

minutes or less using the 

drones, which it began 

testing earlier this year. 

The initial trial will start 

with two customers, with 

plans to expand to others in 

the local area. 

Amazon’s drones are 

fully autonomous and are 

dispatched from a local 

centre. After customers 

make their order, their 

boxed goods are placed inside the body of

down an automated track before taking off 

vertically. The drones are guided by GPS 

and fly below 120 m to land on ground near 

the customer’s home.

technology by Synaptics can spell 

doom for the famous ‘Home button’ 

The new sensor by Synaptics is called as FS9100 and it could end 

the reign of Apple’s famous Home Button. (Reuters) 

Synaptics has been one of the most innovative companies 

in the tech world, especially when it comes to physical 

interfaces in gadgets. Remember the scroll wheel on 

your iPod? Apart from that, it is also famous for making 

touchscreens and fingerprint scanners for a lot of devices. 

The same company now has come up with a technology 

which will make your smartphones ‘all-glass’ or bezel-less. 

The company has rolled out the first optical fingerprint 

sensor for smartphones which is essentially directed 

to detect fingerprints through a thin glass. This new 

functionality will enable smartphone makers to embed the 

sensor right into the display instead of using a third party 

standalone fingerprint sensor. 

The new sensor by Synaptics is called as FS9100 and it 

could end the reign of the famous Home Button. “Optical 

sensing technology, which is very high performance and 

widely proven in other markets, has many advantages such 

as durability, scratch resistance, and resistance to ESD, 

but optical has not been widely adopted in smartphones 

and tablets due to form factor and power consumption 

limitations,” Les Santiago, Research Director for IDC said 

in a media release. He added, “Synaptics is enabling the 

elimination of the home button which is a critical next step 

to full top-to-bottom, edge-to-edge smartphone and tablet 

displays.” 

This essentially means that we can finally have the 

smartphones we see in futuristic movies, the ones made 

up of all glass. The edge to edge display design has been 

tried by Xiaomi as well but its smartphone Mi Mix still 

has a bezel at the bottom. But with the new technology by 

Synaptics, we can have a full edge to edge display phone. 

Earlier smartphone manufacturers were sceptical about 

using the technology of optical sensors as it would be bulky 

and use more battery, but according to Synaptics the new 

sensor will be very thin and consume a lot less power. 

It is expected that the technology will come in the next 

iPhone, touted to be known as the iPhone 8 as according 

to certain reports, the phone will have an OLED screen 

and will be covered with glass. According to reports, the 

sensor chips will be mass produces in the second quarter, 

next year exactly before the expected release of the Apple 

iPhone 8. But it is not clear if Apple will include this or not, 

and it also has not worked wth Synaptics since the iPod. 

Additionally, Apple reportedly also patented a fingerprint 

sensing tech where users can log in by swiping any part 

of the screen, so the company not even need Synaptics. In 

that case, Samsung might use it as well, starting with the 

highly anticipated Galaxy S8.
