TENNIS MEMPHIS
JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT
Tennis Memphis, a 501 c 3 non profit; our mission “To build a better community through tennis and education”, donations are tax-deductible.
Session 3: January 9 – March 11
The Tennis Memphis Junior Development (JD) program offers progressive and engaging tennis instruction for ages 4-18 for
beginner, intermediate and advanced levels of play. The JD program is designed to provide players with the most enjoyable
experience, as well as the greatest opportunity to reach their full potential, with each level building on the skills developed at prior
levels. We provide a clear "Developmental Pathway" designed to help each child progress from one level to the next. The focus is on
developing a solid technical base in movement and strokes. Participants will learn rules and basic strategy. JD is a
“Red/Orange/Green/Yellow Ball” program based on United States Tennis Association (USTA) 10 & under tennis and R.O.G.Y.
guidelines. Participants will play on 36ft, 60ft and 78ft courts, utilizing age appropriate equipment.
Our positive, experienced, and enthusiastic coaches help children grow as athletes, players, and more importantly as healthy
individuals. In addition to our positive on-court teaching, Tennis Memphis recognizes the importance of sports and specifically
tennis, to teach valuable life skills. Our coaching staff prides itself on teaching and mentoring children on the importance of
sportsmanship, teamwork, positive attitude and respect. Our JD program follows the USTA Player Development coaching
philosophy and concepts which are instrumental in long-term development of outstanding players.
The JD program is excellent for kids who desire to progress and play recreationally or competitively up to middle school, high
school or USTA Jr Team Tennis levels. The Tennis Memphis Junior Academy is the next progression in the Development pathway
that began with JD. Our Junior Academy program is for serious players competing in USTA tournaments with the goal of achieving
State, Sectional, National rankings, and potentially a tennis college scholarship.
JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT PATHWAY
Our 10 and Under Tennis program introduces tennis to children based on age, physical size and
ability. By modifying the court dimensions (36 feet or 60 feet in length), equipment (appropriately sized
tennis racquets and red, orange or green balls), net height and scoring system, coupled with a play
component, children develop better technical and point-playing skills.
s
colo
• Red Groups: 19-23” racquets, 36’ court and a Red transition ball
• Orange Groups : 23-25” racquets, 60’ court and an Orange transition ball
• Green Groups: 25-27” racquets, 78’ court and a Green-dot transition ball
• Yellow Group: 25-29” racquets, 78’ court and a regulation Yellow ball
Our developmental pathway helps students progress through the ROGY pathway. Entry into the pathway
is based on age and skill level rather than athletic ability. Students will start playing at the appropriate
point in the pathway and will have to complete certain requirements to move to the next level.
LEVEL, GROUP, AGES & DESCRIPTION
Junior Development is grouped by age and skill level based within each group within these general guidelines.
CLASSES ARE TAUGHT ON INDOOR TENNIS COURTS.
Beginner players are introduced to the fundamentals of tennis through activities designed to build a solid foundation for long term
athletic development. Activities are focused on developing the ABCs (agility, balance and coordination) all while forming the skills
necessary to serve, rally and score. .
Intermediate players continue to sharpen their ABCs (agility, balance and coordination) while beginning to develop more dynamic
movement and footwork patterns that focus on sending and receiving. Introduction to topspin and underspin on both forehand and
backhand strokes and the different grips used. Ability to intentionally place the ball short, deep and side-to-side is crucial before
graduating to next level.
Advanced players build upon the sound athletic base established in earlier classes. Players utilize control, spin, and positioning to
their advantage while also being able to consistently rally and co-operate with a partner. The ability to maintain proper technique
during points and proficiency on serve is a necessity before graduating to the next level.
