A week-long event dedicated to learning in virtual spaces
Event Report

Live Online showcased 30 virtual learning sessions over 5
days. There were 5 Spotlight On sessions with guest speakers
from GroupM partners such as Xaxis, The Exchange Lab and
Kantar, and from external partners such as Mediaocean and QA
Training. We also offered every session in the MSA curriculum
as a virtual classroom, some training primer webinars, Skype
drop in sessions and Yammer learning community jam sessions.
The event was a huge success, not just in terms of registrations
(1117), but because we managed to connect with 255 people
across the group to raise the profile of MSA and remind them of
the importance and the benefits of getting systems and
processes right, first time. Our secondary goal was to introduce
our virtual classroom, where costs to deliver are reduced but
more importantly, the sessions are easier to attend. There’s no
travel involved so we’re able to place greater focus on fewer
approaches and the tools with the biggest impact on
performance improvement. We offer the same courses, but in
shorter modules, which translates into less disruption of day-today
activities and a chance for learners to apply their new skills
between modules.
We learned many new things ourselves during Live Online (turn
to page 13 to find out more) but our survey results confirmed
what we already knew… that when designed and delivered well,
learning in a virtual room can be as enjoyable and as effective as
attending a face-to-face class.

EVENT FEEDBACK
“
Brilliant!
Loved the pacing
of the presenter
and the
interactivity of
the session. Really
enjoyed it.
These should be
mandatory within
a new starter’s
first 3 months
A lot more
professional than
many other
webinar sessions.
The content was
great and very
clearly explained
Really good to get
an early overview
of Prisma ahead
of next year's
release
Very interesting.
It makes more
sense now!
Really helpful
overview, looking
forward to the
other sessions this
week.
Really useful to
have a bitesize
intro into what
TGI can do in
terms of insights
for targeting
customers.
This was really
helpful, seeing the
visuals made
quite a
complicated
process make
more sense.
REFLECTIONS ON LEARNING IN VIRTUAL
SPACES
“
Good to have
bite-sized
learning
opportunities
and not having
to spend an hour
away from your
desk!
Short, sharp and
informative.
It was quick,
interactive and I
learned.
I like how
interactive it was
compared to
usual webinars.
Great way to
train without
extended time
OOO!
Great
communication
and very
engaging
(ensures nobody
drops off!)
Interactiveness
meant I was less
likely to drift off
or get distracted.
Very good
speaker,
explained
everything very
well and got
people involved.
Very clear, great
presenters. Well
judged in terms
of length and
depth of content.
Tech and
interaction
worked well
Comments that will shape our future events…
“I started writing
questions [in the
chat box] but the
presentation had
moved on.”
“Wasn't very clear
where the
handouts are
saved, couldn't see
them!”
“More sessions like
that would be great!
And longer than 30
minutes :)”
“The distinction
[between the new
starter sessions]
wasn’t clear from the
event flyer”
“Show dial-in
details in the
session
window.”
“Had trouble getting
the computer audio
working but was fine
using my mobile.”

WHAT DID WE LEARN FROM LIVE ONLINE WEEK?
• Over subscribe: Our no-show rate was higher than usual, but we
expected that and over subscribed each session to allow for it;
meaning we still had healthy attendance numbers despite half the
registrants not showing up. We’ll definitely over-subscribe again.
• Pick a good date: Our event clashed with Diversity week and the
launch of Xaxis Academy, which may have contributed to the high noshow
rate. We’ve joined the comm’s group to avoid similar clashes in
future.
• Get deeper feedback: We kept the feedback survey questions to a
minimum to encourage more people to respond. In offering a great
prize draw for filling in a feedback form, engagement was high and
we could have asked more. We’ll do this again and ask more
questions on the form.
• Run more special events: We spent a lot on marketing and comms for
the event, with no prior knowledge that it would work. Our
registration and attendance numbers tell us it’s a worthwhile
investment to have an ‘event’, with lots of promotional activity, it
worked much better than the drip-feed approach of regular emails
inviting sign-up for a our weekly sessions.
• Offer more Spotlight On… sessions. We used this new format to
introduce existing resources, like GB TGI survey data, and future tools
like Proteus, Prisma and Radia. Most people liked these short, fastpaced,
interactive webinars, but some expected them to be in-depth
training sessions, and therefore found them too brief. We’ll continue
to offer Spotlight On… sessions, maintaining the title and branding to
ensure attendees join with the right expectations.
