North
“Knaves and foul weather come out of the North”
Devon Proverb quoted by Ted Hughes
The idea of the North may conjure up thoughts of a cold, dark, bleak and empty
landscape. Yet there are several designated “Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty”
in Northern England. These areas can lack the sublime wildness found in certain
more rugged places, but on the other hand, neither do they possess the gentle
pastoral idyll of the Southern English countryside. The landscape can appear stuck
between these two extremes. Even in the most isolated locations the hand of Man is
very much in evidence. Photography may be thought of as producing an objective
record of the landscape, but in fact images are very much shaped by our
preconceptions and concept of beauty. By taking photographs we not only explore
the land, but also the actions of others and our own thoughts.
