STARS IDIOMAS
A Stars Idiomas nasceu do sonho de dividir conhecimento, sonho projetado e
executado pela professora Fabiana Lopes Nunes, graduada em Letras (UFG) e especialista
no ensino e aprendizagem da língua inglesa (UEG). A professora Fabiana possui
experiência de mais de 10 anos como professora de Inglês e residiu quatro anos na
Europa (República da Irlanda), onde além de estudar Inglês também se formou em técnico
de enfermagem e trabalhou como intérprete e enfermeira. Fabiana conhece bem as
professores formados e bem treinados.
God is good all the time all the time God is good.
Next Witness: Will The Yellow Smiley Face Take The Stand?
http://esl-bits.net/listening/Media/2015-03-13/Emojis/default.html
RACHEL MARTIN, HOST:
Emojis can be a whole lot of fun - you
know, those little pictures on our phones
that seem to express sentiments when
words fall short. Sometimes we need to
punctuate our thoughts and phrases with a
sad cat, floating hearts, maybe an alien
had. Not so complicated when they appear
in our personal email or text, but emojis are
now popping up in an odd place -
courtrooms. These odd little images have
been entered as evidence in a handful of
cases in just the past few months. Here to
help us make sense of this is Dalia Topelson
Ritvo. She is the assistant director of
Thanks so much for talking with us.
DALIA TOPELSON RITVO: My pleasure.
MARTIN: So, Dalia, can you walk us
through one of these recent examples,
when and how emojis were entered as
evidence?
TOPELSON RITVO: Yes, probably the
most recent and high-profile case is a
federal case against the person who ran an
online market for drug trafficking called Silk
Road. And essentially, I think the
prosecution started reading emoticon at
the end. So it didn't say something like
smiley face or frowny face. And the defense
pretty much said this was not an accurate
record of the evidence that was being
presented. So the judge actually found that
the emojis should be read into the
testimony and the jurors should have the
ability to read the texts or online messages
themselves so that they could see the
emojis in context.
MARTIN: But some of these things are
41 37 STARS IDIOMAS
just random, just strange images that seem
completely unrelated to the text. How do you
deal with those in a courtroom situation
because you don't want the lawyers to be telling
a jury what a certain emoticon means because
they would be then kind of swaying their
opinion of that?
TOPELSON RITVO: I think that's correct. And
I think potentially or the ideal situation would
be that if I wrote a text, and my text was
admitted as evidence in trial, then the attorneys
could ask me what I meant by that. This is also
the same thing that happens, you know, for
instance, when slang is introduced into
evidence. Not everybody uses the same words
in the same way. And it's up to the attorneys in
presenting their cases to be able to clarify that
in a way that gets to the actual meaning
intended by the speaker. And, of course, if it's a
little alien head, you know, I can't out of context
say what that would mean with respect to a
certain portion of text.
MARTIN: But I do hear you saying that this is
not trivial, that these things matter.
TOPELSON RITVO: I would say it would. I
think as these types of communications
become more ubiquitous and potentially a
richer source of evidence in disputes, I think
these types of mechanisms to indicate tone or
intent couldn really come to play at trial,
especially in criminal cases where the intention
of a person may really be at issue.
MARTIN: Dalia Topelson Ritvo. She is the
assistant director of Harvard Law School's
Cyber Law Clinic. Thanks so much for talking
with us, Dalia.
TOPELSON RITVO: Thank you.
RACHEL MARTIN, HOST:
Every year, millions of commercial honey
bees hit the road headed to farms around
the country to pollinate crops. Occasionally,
there are mishaps like the one that took
place this past week in Delaware when a
tractor-trailer carrying hundreds of
beehives tipped over on the highway.
We wondered - how do you go about
wrangling almost 20 million angry bees?
Deborah Delaney is an entomologist at the
University of Delaware, and she was on the
scene of that accident. She joins us to
explain what she saw. Deborah, thanks so
much for being with us.
DEBORAH DELANEY: Oh, thank you so
much for having me.
MARTIN: So you're a bee specialist, and
when something like this happens - which
apparently it does from time to time - your
phone ends up ringing. You traveled to the
scene, as we mentioned. What was the
situation when you got there? Paint us a
picture.
DELANEY: Well, when we arrived, it was
probably around 9 o'clock. And I believe the
accident occurred quite a bit earlier, at least
three hours earlier. So it was dark. There
were about four other beekeepers there
with smoke and clouds and clouds of angry
bees, completely disoriented bees clinging
onto every possible surface and just a heap
of colonies overturned.
MARTIN: So how do you even begin to get
the bees back into the hives and back onto a
truck? Can you walk me through it?
DELANEY: It's tricky. I wish I had a pipe so I
could, you know, whistle a beautiful melody
to get them all to go back in, but it's not that
easy.
MARTIN: (Laughter) It doesn't work that
way.
DELANEY: When they're that disturbed and
agitated, if you come near them, they're going to
sting you. And they're trying to get into your suit
and your veil. So we're just using smoke. Any big
pallet that we could find in the wreck, we would
pull down and lay on the ground. And then any intact,
deep boxes - which are the main brood
chamber where the queen should be, and also
her young and eggs - we would try to recover that
and put that on the pallet. They could then load
that onto another truck with a forklift, and take it
back to a holding yard to assess the damage for
later.
MARTIN: What about the finances of this,
Deborah? For a beekeeper to lose that many
beans, how much money does that mean?
DELANEY: I would be crying, I think. What I've
heard is that it was valued at about a quarter of a
million dollars. It was about $250,000, and that
was including the money that he would have
gotten from the pollination contract.
MARTIN: This isn't the first time an accident like
this has happened. Is this just part of the deal of
transporting bees? You have to factor in a level of
risk or are there certain safety precautions that
can and should be taken, do you think, to prevent
this?
DELANEY: I know that they're getting more
efficient with how to load them securely, making
sure that the load is balanced and equalized on
the truck. And I know that certain people, some
migratory beekeepers are even looking into plans
of building and making trucks where the bees are
actually kept inside of a more climatized
container unit. We're going to definitely see
advances in this area.
MARTIN: Deborah Delaney is assistant professor
of entomology at the University of Delaware,
talking to us about catching bees. Thanks so
much, Deborah.
