Max Lapthorne max@lockportlegend.com New year, new me. That is the mantra commonly thrown around this time of the year, as we all attempt to better ourselves by sticking to our New Year’s resolutions. Some people set specific goals for themselves, such as losing weight or getting a promotion, but my New Year’s resolution isn’t as cut and dry. My goal for this year is to get out of my comfort zone more often and be more welcoming to new ideas and opinions. While I don’t consider myself to be exceptionally close-minded, I think one of the most important things people can do is be willing to accept a point of view that conflicts with their own. And I am a creature of habit, so getting out of my comfort zone isn’t usually on my day-to-day agenda. But, I’m hoping I’ll push myself a little more to experience things I wouldn’t normally in 2017. There’s a wide range of New Year’s resolutions for us to choose from, and I’m sure most of you have your own —big or small — that you plan on sticking to this year. In this week’s news cover story on Page 3, we take a look at how people in Lockport are accomplishing the most common resolution of all — getting in shape. Gyms always get more crowded at the beginning of the year with everyone starting their resolutions, and Lockport is no different. Challenge Fitness is even offering discounts for those who are looking to get started working out. A discounted membership and the desire to be a better person in the new year is often enough to get people to the gym in January, but the struggle comes with consistency. Year-round gym-goers often joke about the influx of members in the month of January, but it inevitably dies down because people struggle to break their previous routine and create a new one. There is definitely no shame in that, because it is difficult to make a change and have it stick on the first try. If we’re willing to accept a change in our lives, be it small or large, we will be able to facilitate not only New Year’s resolutions, but all sorts of positive changes. Making New Year’s resolutions is a way for us to prove to ourselves that we’re capable of changing for the better, and it doesn’t really matter what the resolution is. So, best of luck to all of you with your resolutions, I hope you stick with them to the end and can turn around this time next year and make a new one. “So the other day fellow scribe Mark Gregory was writing a story and did a word count afterward...
