Trains became an important part of the parish even before there 

was a parish as the first railroad arrived about 1850, some fifty 

years earlier -- their tracks a trail to a history that helped introduce 

us to the world. 

Numerous “dummy tracks” soon branched east and west from the 

main line to dairy country and rich forests for harvesting timber. 

Most towns had “spurs” alongside the main tracks where farm 

produce, grain, cotton, and cattle were loaded to await pick-up by 

freight trains. Nearly two-hundred ice-cooled cars of strawberries 

were shipped a day in a good season. The fastest passenger train 

stopped briefly in Manchac to take on barrels of seafood for Chicago. 

Independence had a cannery and Hammond, a shoe factory. 

Businessmen flocked to the Casa de Fresa Hotel across from the 

Hammond depot and the Gateway Hotel across from the Ponchatoula 

depot. Amite’s Ponder Hotel housed businessmen but, as 

halfway point to the state line, also gained fame as the place to 

dine and relax. 

The railroad advertised our parish for clean air and pure water, 

a healthy place to live, work or vacation, naming Arcola, Fluker 

and Tangipahoa for hunting and fishing, and Roseland for its 

Cherokee roses and mild winters for Northerners. Resorts and 

country homes to tempt New Orleanians as well. Natalbany, as 

several others, had sawmills. 

So many trains ran a day that Osyka, Mississippi, folks attended 

movies in Kentwood and anyone in the parish could spend the 

day in New Orleans and be back before bedtime. 

With several depots burned in the Civil War and less passenger 

traffic, the few rebuilt are worth a visit. Amite’s houses a Council 

on Aging site and until recently the police department as does 

Independence’s. Ponchatoula’s is home to the Country Market 

with handcrafted items and tasty goodies. 

The Hammond depot houses the Clerk of Court’s office, the 

Chamber of Commerce and is the only Amtrak train stop in the 

parish with nearly 14,000 passengers a year. On the National Historic 

Register of Historic Places, it still has a part of 

the traditional depot waiting room.

Ponchatoula has a “town” within a town? 

In 1922, the country’s demand for virgin cypress brought in Louisiana 

Cypress Lumber Company, so large, that the area became 

“Millville” – now the location of Industrial Park and many acres 

nearby. 

Employing so many people, the company built numerous cypress 

houses for some of them: small and medium cottages for regular 

workers, larger homes for superintendents. Naturally bug-proof, 

the houses stand today as beautiful monuments to those times and 

“gold mines” to their residents who’ve bought and updated them. 

Our town locomotive was only one of L.C.’s engines to cross 

U.S. 51 before daylight to the Illinois Central Railroad tracks and 

onto spurs throughout the swamps, returning after dark with cars 

filled with timber for milling. 

Plant steam whistles served as clocks for miles around, blasting 

at seven, noon, and knock-off time. 

Workers were paid in “brozenes” (tokens) used in the commissary 

which stocked groceries, clothes and everyday items. The 

mill provided a drugstore as well as its own doctor. 

While there is no “Millville” sign as such, you’ll know you’ve 

started your four-mile-plus circling tour by seeing names like 

Millside Restaurant, Millville Baptist Church and Mill Gardens 

subdivision or the original “roundhouse” Louisiana Cypress 

retail store by the Electric Train Depot on 51 South.

Big Red Barn 

The Big Red Barn is housed 

in an adorable cottage in 

downtown Ponchatoula. It’s 

not red, it’s not big, and it’s 

not a barn- but it is a lot of 

fun! Open the front door, and 

enter our cheerful play room, 

filled with toys. The play 

room is used for songs, stories, 

rug time, and free play. 

Through a pair of French 

doors is our art room. The 

room is filled with light and color and is perfect for the myriad 

of creative art activities that The Big Red Barn has to offer. We

Chappapeela Sports Park 

The Hammond Area Recreation District No. 1 was created 

by ordinance of the Tangipahoa Parish Council in the mid 

1990’s that includes most of the corporate limits of the 

City of Hammond and the Seventh Ward, bordered on the 

west by the Tangipahoa/ Livingston Parish Boundary, bordered 

on the east by Tangipahoa River, and shares a border 

on the south with Ponchatoula Area Recreation District.

Collinswood School Museum 

The Collinswood School Museum actually had it’s beginning 

around 1876 when it was constructed specifically as 

a one room school house. 

Mr. Collins constructed 

the school house on his 

estate, approximately one 

mile west of Ponchatoula, 

to assure an education for 

his son. He then hired and 

boarded a teacher and offered 

educational training 

for other children in the 

area. The school operated 

in that fashion until around 

1908. Grades 1 through 6 

were taught in the single 

room.

Columbia Theatre 

The Columbia Theatre for the Performing 

Arts, which is located at 220 E. Thomas St. 

Hammond, LA, 70401, is owned and operated 

by Southeastern Louisiana University. 

It is a historic theatre (circa 1928) that was 

completely renovated and reopened its doors 

in 2002. The theatre presents a mix of classical 

and contemporary concerts, dance, and 

theatrical events year-round, including its 

October festival, Fanfare, and provides the 

area with a first class setting for entertainment. 

The renovated theatre boasts a main 

830-seat performance hall, a conference 

area, and administrative offices.
