Sunderland finished third and remained the leader while both Joey and Vince moved up a few places. Stage 9: Then Stage Nine was cancelled. With only three days to go, Barreda took Stage 10 (a long 750 kilometres with 450 racing kilo’s). By now Sunderland must have realised that a first Dakar victory was on the cards and he played it safe to finish 12th. Crosbie was flying and a 33rd place resulted in him moving into the thirties (38th place). It was a tough day for Joey who injured his knee ligaments during the first half of the Dakar and had to strap it every day. He fell twice and damaged his front wheel, but still finished 98th. What a stage the penultimate stage was! Barreda took the victory of this 760km stage (300km special stage). But there was bad news for Evans who found himself stuck in fesh-fesh (the thick, powdery dust) and ended up having his bike run over by a car! He managed to roll out of the way and was unscathed. His bike was badly damaged with the exhaust flattened and pressed into the rear tyre; the front fuel tank was broken off and the fuel spilt out and his navigation tower was damaged. He lost an hour fixing it as best as he could and slowly got going again Later he came across an abandoned bike – the rider had been airlifted after he crashed and broke his arm – and Joey ‘borrowed’ parts to fix his bike. He got to the finish at 2:15am. You can’t take these South Africans anywhere! What a story he has for his grandkids one day! Barreda took yet another victory with Sunderland finishing fifth – and keeping his overall lead. Vince was 28th and moved to the 35th place on the overall standings. With a long 722 kilometres to go – and only 64 to race – it was time for the last day of the 2017 Dakar Rally and the riders started in the reverse order. Joey was late for the start but finished his Dakar Dream in 93rd place overall while Vince was 36th overall and 16th in the Rookie Class. Sam Sunderland became the first Britt to win the Dakar Rally – it was also the first time that he has completed the Dakar Rally. Sunderland’s been in the fray for a while now, and has shown flashes of brilliance in the past, but hasn’t actually finished a Dakar until this year. You have to hand it to him – that’s finishing in style. Taking his KTM 450 to task for a total time of 32 hours, six minutes and 22 seconds, Sunderland beat teammate Matthias Walkner by more than half an hour overall to claim victory. Walkner finished second, his first finish after three tries. The privateer KTM rider, Gerard Farres, was third and rounded off an all KTM podium. Adrien van Beveren (Yamaha) was fourth with Barreda Bort (Honda) rounding off the top five. This is KTM’s 16th successive Dakar win. Of the 144 motorcycles who started the race, 110 reached the Rest Day and 97 made it to the finish line. Three Ladies finished in the motorcycle category with the Spaniard, Laia Sanz (KTM) finishing 16th. Her seventh meadal. Nani Roma’s wife, Rosa Font, completed the Dakar for the third time in 80th and the Russian Anastasiya Nifontova (Husqvarna) was 75th in her first Dakar. The Estonian, Toomas Triisa (who came here to race the Roof two years ago), won the Malles-Moto category and finished 30th overall.
