Giniel de Villiers Gazoo Racing
Cars:
In the vehicle category, the South Africanbuilt
Toyota Hilux bakkies did quite well
despite their normally aspirated petrol
engines struggling with a loss of power
at high altitudes where the turbodiesel
Peugeots had a blast.
Three Hilux bakkies finished in the top
nine – the Spaniard, Nani Roma, was
fourth, Giniel de Villiers and his German
navigator, Dirk von Zitzewitz was fifth
(they had navigation issues and a few
flat tyres) while the Zimbabwian, Conrad
Rautenbach and his Jo’burg navigator,
Rob Howie, was ninth. Rautenbach won
the best rookie as he competed in his first
ever Dakar.
The race was won by six time
motorcycle winner, Stephane Peterhansel
(Peugeot) who took his seventh victory
in the car category at his 28th Dakar!
His team-mate and multiple World Rally
Champion, Sebastian Loeb came in
second and former multiple motorcycle
winner, Cyril Depres took third.
The Neil Woolridge built Ford Ranger
was 20th.
In the truck category, the Pretoria
technician, Sean Berriman, was in the
MAN assistance truck that completed the
race in 36th place.
What a race! Great entertainment for
the start of the year! Seldom has there
been so much hype around this event.
Roll on 2018!!
