Ramadan in our lives, I hope this brings the best of things to all in<br />
our Muslim community, everyone should try to get maximum benefit<br />
from this month.<br />
As we all know that PLA elections are approaching, it becomes the<br />
ethical duty of each professional to get involved actively through<br />
participation as member and vote for genuine representatives.<br />
Pakistan <strong>Librarian</strong>s Welfare Organization has been enthusiastically<br />
engaged in delivering ideas, information and professional knowledge through different<br />
workshops, seminars and events to help library professionals for their learning and research.<br />
This issue of newsletter would give you an update on the happenings, events and news in<br />
the LIS circle during April-June <strong>2014</strong>. If you are not already a member, please join. If you<br />
are already associated, please consider getting more involved. In order to meet the challenges<br />

President’s Note..<br />
I am delighted that Muhammad Shahid Soroya – Secretary General PLWO has added<br />
another feather in his cap. Now he has become Dr. Muhammad Shahid Soroya. He<br />
worked hard and made his place not only in practical librarianship but also in academics.<br />
So he has secured the well-deserved Ph. D. degree. I, personally as well as on<br />
behalf of all team members of Pakistan <strong>Librarian</strong>s Welfare Organization, congratulate<br />
him on this marvelous achievement<br />
Muhammad Asif Munir<br />
Elections of Pakistan Library Association (PLA) are onset. <strong>The</strong>y demand sensible<br />
approach. We should proactively participate in the process whether we contest these<br />
elections or not. It is our moral duty to support people who have potential to deliver.<br />
Now it is time to motivate other professionals to take membership of the association<br />
and fulfill professional duty by participating in elections. I believe that change can be<br />
brought through democratic process.<br />
In last, I would like to appreciate the efforts of PLWO team members who worked in<br />
organizing 2 nd PLWO annual dinner and musical night. Team members of PLWO<br />
Federal Branch deserve special appreciation and I urge that we all should spare a<br />
little more time from our busy lives to work voluntarily for our professional fellows.<br />
We can only excel through hard work, dedication and sense of responsibility.<br />
We need to carry on by every means in all situations. So keep your heads high with<br />
pride and continue progressing.<br />

PLWO 2 nd Annual Dinner and Musical Night <strong>2014</strong><br />
An Unforgettable Event<br />
Pakistan <strong>Librarian</strong>s Welfare Organization (PLWO) always strives for creating get together opportunities<br />
for LIS community in Pakistan. We have set an example of holding annual dinners embellished<br />
with musical and mashaira nights. Keeping the tradition alive, PLWO arranged 2 nd annual dinner on<br />
Saturday, April 26, <strong>2014</strong>. Two well known singers were inviteto amuse the audience. <strong>The</strong> venue of dinner<br />
was Royal Palm Country Club, Lahore. <strong>The</strong> club is one among the finest venues of the country.<br />
More than 300 members of LIS community attended the dinner. Many dignitaries also participated in<br />
the event. Dignitaries include Mr. Javed Iqbal – Cartoonist, Prof. Dr. Mehmood H. Butt, Ex-Vice Chancellor,<br />
Allama Iqbal Open University, Mian Misbah ur Rehman, Chairman Lahore Gymkhana, Prof. Dr.<br />
Muhammad Amin Athar, Registrar University of the Punjab, Lahore, Dr. Waqar Ch. Director<br />
(Economic News Service) Associated Press of Pakistan, Dr. Kamran Abid, Additional Registrar, University<br />
of the Punjab, Lahore, Dr Muhammad Ramzan, Director Library, Lahore University of Management<br />
Sciences (LUMS), Lahore, and Ch. Muhammad Hanif, Chief <strong>Librarian</strong>, University of the Punjab,<br />
Lahore.<br />
<strong>The</strong> singers Aijaz Ahmed and Saima Mumtaz entertained the audience through the music and received<br />
a lot of appreciation. Participants enjoyed a lot and were also happy to meet their peers from all across<br />
the Pakistan in the beautiful evening.<br />
<strong>The</strong> formal ceremony started with the recitation from holy Quran followed by a Naat Sharif. Mr. Muhammad<br />
Shahid Soroya – Secretary General PLWO performed his role as stage secretary.<br />
In his presidential address, Mr. Muhammad Asif Munir, President PLWO emphasized on learning<br />
through peers and said that such events provide ample opportunities of learning. He also thanked the<br />
PLWO team on organizing this excellent event. He also thanked to the participants who travelled from<br />
far off places of the country to show their presence in the event.<br />

Prof. Dr. Mehmood H. Butt praised PLWO team for this volunteer work and encouraged to proceed<br />
with more vigor and energy. He said that professional associations play an important role in awareness<br />
of rights among the professionals. So the PLWO is doing right thing in realizing people about<br />
their rights. He also appreciated the efforts of the organization in reviving Pakistan Library Association<br />
(PLA).<br />
Very famous personality of the gathering, Mr. Javed Iqbal Cartoonist appreciated the PLWO management<br />
for gathering librarians from the whole country on this magnificent feast. He showed his<br />
delight on being part of this community. He urged PLWO to carry on similar programs in future as<br />
well.<br />
Dr. Muhammad Ramzan, praised the team PLWO for organizing the dinner and musical night. He<br />
encouraged librarians to implement new technologies in their libraries and become proactive learners.<br />
He also made an important announcement that he is formally merging Foundation for Authentic<br />
Information and Research (FAIR Information) into Pakistan <strong>Librarian</strong>s Welfare Organization<br />
(PLWO).<br />
I am very much thankful to all the participants of this wonderful event. I am indebted to Dr. Muhammad<br />
Ramzan and Ch. Muhammad Hanif for their continuous support and encouragement. <strong>The</strong>y<br />
are very generous all the time and always supported us on every initiative we took.<br />

National Seminar on World Book and Copy Right Day<br />

Pakistan Library Association (PLA) in collaboration with Pakistan <strong>Librarian</strong>s Welfare<br />
Organization (PLWO), Punjab University Library and Information Science Alumni Association<br />
(PULISAA), Quaid-i-Azam Library and Pakistan Library Automation Group (PAKlag) organized<br />
National Seminar on World Book & Copy Right Day on 23rd April <strong>2014</strong> at Quaid-e-Azam<br />
Library, Lahore. Minster for Education Punjab, Rana Mashood Ahmed Khan was the chief<br />
guest in this seminar.<br />
In relevance with the world book and copy right day the Education Minister announced<br />
various digital library projects. He admired the efforts of Pakistan Library Association in this<br />
regard as well. DG Public Libraries Punjab Zaheer ud Din Babar, President PLA Ch. Muhammad<br />
Hanif, President, PLA Punjab Dr. Muhammad Ramzan , Chairperson DLISPU Prof. Dr.<br />
Kanwal Ameen, President PLWO Asif Munir, Secretary General PLA Shahid Soroya and other<br />
immanent personalities attended this seminar to support the importance of books and copyrights<br />
. This seminar was followed by oath taking ceremony of new elected council of PULISAA<br />
(Punjab University Library & Information Science Alumni Association). This wonderful seminar<br />
on World Book & Copy Right Day was immensely covered by print and electronic media.<br />

3-Days National Symposium on<br />
“Social Science Research”<br />

Symposium Participants Group Picture<br />
Pakistan <strong>Librarian</strong>s Welfare Organization (PLWO), Federal Branch in association with Riphah International<br />
University, Islamabad organized a 3-day National Symposium on “Social Science Research” from June 20 to 22<br />
June, <strong>2014</strong> at Conference Hall, Riphah International University, Islamabad.<br />
Symposium was well representative event attended by large number of librarians, information professionals,<br />
scholars and researchers from different organizations, NGO‟s and universities. <strong>The</strong> symposium was the continuation<br />
of PLWO‟s commitment to work for the capacity building of librarians and information science professionals<br />
and to facilitate researchers in their research work. <strong>The</strong> broad objective of symposium was to equip researchers<br />
with cutting-edge techniques of modern day research.<br />
Acknowledgments<br />
PLWO owes to acknowledge the support provided by Information Services Department, Riphah International<br />
University, Islamabad. PLWO especially thanked all speakers at the event who conducted 12 sessions as well as<br />
the participants who actively participated in this national symposium.<br />
Introduction of programme<br />
Zaheer Ahmad, Secretary, Pakistan <strong>Librarian</strong>s Welfare Organization_Federal Branch, welcomed the participants<br />
and said such large number of participants testified to the importance of National Symposium on “Social Science<br />
Research”. Dilating upon the format of programe, he said that there would be a total of 12-sessions and hoped<br />
that all speakers would conclude their sessions within the confines of timeline. While introducing the topics, he<br />
said sessions are planned to brainstorm on research issues which are being faced by social science researchers.<br />

In keynote address on “social science research methodology” Dr. Anis Ahmad, briefly discussed the differences<br />
between methods and methodology in research process. He emphasized that such events are the way forward to<br />
produce good results in research.<br />

Resource Persons<br />
Mr. Muhammad Shahid Soroya Chief <strong>Librarian</strong>, ITU, Lahore<br />
Muhammad Shahid Soroya, while opening the session, gave introduction of social science research<br />
and overall understanding of the concept. He briefly discussed the scientific research methods and<br />
scientific research process. In his 2nd session, he guided the researchers about the critical review of<br />
literature. Commenting on this theme, he said researchers should review all relevant literature critically<br />
and also cite it in research work properly to authenticate research outputs. He added that thorough<br />
review of literature, viewing all prior work relevant to the research topic and proper citation<br />
will authenticate the research outputs.<br />
Dr. Muhammad Ramzan Director LUMS Library, Lahore<br />
He conducted 5-sessions in the national symposium. In his first session, he delivered detailed lecture<br />
on critical thinking in social science research. While commenting on the selection of topic, he said<br />
researcher should be careful while selecting the topic because right selection of topic leads to right<br />
result. He added that topic should be narrowed down to address specific problem. He involved the<br />
participants practically during this lecture and assigned them to select a topic of your research. In<br />
his 2 nd and 3 rd session, he briefly discussed qualitative vs quantitative research methods and highlighted<br />
guidelines for research tool development. While addressing in 4 th sessions, he discussed on the<br />
ethics of research, their implication on the overall research process. He was of the view that only<br />
honest person would contribute valuable and authenticate research outputs. He discussed in detail<br />
how to avoid plagiarism. Participants also learnt how to use TURNITIN to determine originality of<br />
text of research work.In the last session, he highlighted guidelines about the art of writing research<br />
papers, publishing and presenting papers in conferences. During and after all presentations, he also<br />
conducted mock sessions to answer different questions raised by participants. He praised the enthusiasm<br />
of learning displayed by participants. All sessions of Dr. Muhammad Ramzan were highly<br />
acknowledged from researchers and they were of the view that we are now in position to start research<br />
work properly.<br />

He discussed advance searching techniques to search relevant literature on the specific topic. In this<br />
inter-active session, participants learnt that how to make online searching skills more effective. He<br />
also briefly discussed CRAP test for Authentication of Data and its Sources.<br />
Mr. Salman Bin Naeem Research Scholar, Ph. D<br />
He delivered his lecture on choosing appropriate statistical test for quantitative data analysis by<br />
explaining level of measurements i.e. nominal, ordinal, interval and ratio. He explained types of variables<br />
and the difference between research questions and hypothesis. In his 2nd session, he discussed<br />
sample size determination in social science, research level of significance. In addition to this, he also<br />
explained various module of G* power by explaining alpha value, effect size, sample size for one tail<br />
(s) and two tail (s).In his concluding remarks, being a host and collaborator of this event formally<br />
thanked all speakers and participants for sharing their intellect and relevant experiences and further<br />
thanked general participants (from diverse backgrounds) for their active Participation.<br />

Pakistan librarian Welfare Organization and Pakistan library Automation Group organized<br />
a Seminar on “Innovations in Saudi University Libraries: An insider’s view” with the collaboration<br />
of Quaid-e-Azam library, the mall Lahore on Wednesday, 25 th June <strong>2014</strong>.<br />
Dr. Khalid Mahmood who is currently working at University of Dammam, Saudi Arabia as the<br />
head of Information, Learning and Research Commons was the resource person. <strong>The</strong> seminar<br />
started with recitation of Holy Quran by Hafiza Kiran neemat . In this seminar Dr. Khalid<br />
Mahmood shared his experiences and observations on structure and working of various Saudi university<br />
libraries His specific emphasis was on technological revolution and innovations taking<br />
place in Saudi library culture.<br />
Dr. Zaheer Ahmad Babar (Director General Public Libraries Punjab) was the Chief Guest. Dr.<br />
Muhammad Shahid soroya was the guest of honor and Mr. Abid Ali Gill ex-chief <strong>Librarian</strong> (Quaid<br />
-e-Azam library) was especially invited for this seminar. In the welcome address to Dr. Muhammad<br />
Shahid soroya secretary General PLWO shared his concerns regarding upcoming PLA election<br />
and requested the participants to get the membership PLA for participating in PLA election<br />
<strong>2014</strong>. He also mentioned struggle of PLWO for the betterment of LIS profession. He said, we<br />
would welcome collaborations with other organizations and organizations in future as well.<br />
In closing remarks the Chief Guest, Dr. Zaheer Ahmad Babar, Director General Public Libraries<br />
Punjab, congratulated PLWO, Paklag teams for organizing a successful seminar, and recommended<br />
for holding such events in future. He also thanked Prof. Dr. Khalid Mahmood Malik for sparing<br />
his valuable time for seminar.<br />

2-Days Practical Workshop on “Library Automation Using LIMS”<br />
June 20 – 21, <strong>2014</strong><br />

Pakistan <strong>Librarian</strong>s Welfare Organization (Faisalabad Chapter) has organized its 1 st 2-Days Practical<br />
Workshop on Library Automation Using LIMS for LIS community especially for AIOU students to enhance<br />
their capacity building regarding library automation in collaboration with City District Government<br />
Faisalabad and Society for Reading & Knowledge. More than 70 participants from Faisalabad Division<br />
i.e.Faisalabad City, Chiniot, Samundari, Jaranwala, Toba Tek Singh, Jhang, Gojra, Jhumra attended<br />
this useful workshop. Some key points of the workshop are as under.<br />
Day 1.<br />
Workshop started with the Recitation of Holy Quran by Hafiz Nazir. After the Recitation of the Holy<br />
Quran Mr. Ayoub Bhatti presented Naat Sharif then Mr. Mushtaq Ahmad, President PLWO-FC welcomed<br />
the participants and gave a comprehensive briefing about 2-days practical workshop. He emphasizes<br />
that automation of libraries is essential to survive in this modern era.After welcome address Mr.<br />
Nadeem Sohail from Rachna College, Gujranwala and Ms. Misbah Bashir from University of Faisalabad<br />
(Resource Persons) have started technical sessions of the workshop. In this session, they introduced LIMS<br />
to the participants and gave orientation about the software. After the technical session, a delicious lunch<br />
with tea has been served to all the participants. Hands on practice session held after jumah prayer.<br />
Day 2.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Recitation from Holy Quran recited at the beginning of the day. After Recitation LIMS issues and<br />
problems had discussed with the participants by the resource person. In second session LIMS OPAC introduction,<br />
installation and orientation has been presented to the participants. Refreshment was enjoyed by<br />
the participants after the second session. After refreshment Mr. Nadeem Sohail gave a presentation on web<br />
OPAC and Digital Library. A question/answer session has also been conducted by the resource persons at<br />
the end of the workshop.<br />
Mr. Tariq Khan Niazi, District Monitoring Officer (DMO) Faisalabad has graced the closing ceremony as a<br />
Chief Guest. He distributed the certificates and workshop automation kit to the participants and appreciated<br />
efforts of PLWO-FC to organize such a tremendous workshop for LIS community of Faisalabad Division.<br />
He assured full support and cooperation from City District Government in all such activities in future.<br />
At the end, Mr. Mushtaq Ahmad gave vote of thanks to Chief Guest as well as participants of the workshop.<br />
He offered his full support and cooperation to all the participants for any query related to libraries<br />
and ensured them that he will guide them in their future plans for promoting the library culture in the<br />
country especially in Faisalabad Region.<br />

A seminar on “Living With Books in the Age of Electronic and Social Media” was organized by Department of Library<br />
and Information Science to commemorate World Book and Copyright Day at Al Razi Hall, Undergraduate Block, University<br />
of the Punjab on April 22, <strong>2014</strong>.<br />
PU Central library acknowledged book lovers by distributing books among them. Department of Library and Information<br />
Science, Punjab University also arranged competitions among students, in one of the competition students asked<br />
to write 100-150 words on the “Role of reading in personality development”. <strong>The</strong> winners of this competition were announced<br />
in the ceremony and were awarded by PU library.<br />
Pakistan Library Association organized a “National Seminar on World Book & Copy Right Day” in collaboration with<br />
PULISAA, PLWO and PAKLAG on 23rd April at 10.00am at Quad-i-Azam Library, the Mall Lahore. A large number of<br />
library professionals attended the seminar. Provincial Education Minister Rana Mashood Ahmed Khan attended the seminar<br />
and shared provincial park libraries initiative with the professional. At the end of the seminar newly elected body of<br />
PULISAA took oath.<br />
On the event of World Book and Copy Right Day Celebrations Department of Library and Information Science, Islamia<br />
University Bahawalpur organized a walk at Baghdad-ul-Jadid Campus at 9:30 am on April 23, <strong>2014</strong> from Department of<br />
Library and Information Science to Main Library and Engineering College. After the walk a seminar on “Future Library<br />
Vision 2025: Treating Library Users as Authors” was organised in the Department of Library and Information Science.<br />
One-Day National Workshop on “Subject Guides: How to create, manage and disseminate an Online A to Z Guide for<br />
Subjects, Databases, Journals, FAQs and Videos” by using SubjectsPlus at H.E.J. Research Institute of Chemistry, University<br />
of Karachi on April 24, <strong>2014</strong>. <strong>The</strong> workshop was very interactive, informative and helpful in exploring the creating<br />
of A to Z Online Subject Guides by using SubjectPlus. 61 participants attended this workshop.<br />
One day Seminar on “Emerging Trends and Future of <strong>Librarian</strong>ship” jointly organized by Pakistan Library Association<br />
and central Library Bahauddin Zakarya University Multan on April 28, <strong>2014</strong>. Main speaker of the seminar was Dr. Muhammad<br />
Ramzan, Director Library LUMS.<br />
UPLISAA Federal Branch and Bahria University Islamabad Campus jointly organized one day national seminar on<br />
“Advances in Library and Information Science” on May 17, <strong>2014</strong> at Bahria University, Islamabad. It remained a good<br />
opportunity for Library and Information science professionals to share their knowledge and experiences with each other<br />
on new trends in Library and Information Science and management skills and more than 45 LIS professionals enthusiastically<br />
participated in the seminar.<br />
Department of Library and Information Science, IUB organized one day Workshop on “Fundamentals of Research, Ethical<br />
<strong>Issue</strong> in Research and Avoiding Plagiarism through Turnitin” on 2 nd May <strong>2014</strong> for the LIS students. Dr. Muhammad<br />
Ramzan, Director Library, Lahore University of Management Sciences was the Resource Person.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Department of Library and Information Science, University of the Punjab, Lahore organized a one day workshop on<br />
“Emerging Challenges for Information Professionals in the Punjab University & Strategies to meet them”. <strong>The</strong> workshop<br />
was designed specifically for the PU <strong>Librarian</strong>s to sensitize them regarding future challenges in academic librarianship<br />
and strategies to meet them. Altogether 43 library professionals attended this workshop.<br />

in National Development of Pakistan” on May 31, <strong>2014</strong>.<br />
<strong>The</strong> National Library of Engineering Sciences, University of Engineering & Technology Lahore organized a three days<br />
training workshop on KOHA Library Management System for library professional staff of the departmental libraries. <strong>The</strong><br />
workshop was held on June 3-5, <strong>2014</strong> at Information Resource Center of NLES. Twenty Two librarians and staff members<br />
of departmental libraries and KSK campus libraries attended the workshop.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Department of Library and Information Science, University of the Punjab in collaboration with Institute of Applied<br />
Psychology and Center for Clinical Psychology University of the Punjab organized one day workshop on “Managing Qualitative<br />
Research with Nvivo 10 on June 6, <strong>2014</strong>. <strong>The</strong> workshop was designed specifically for the faculty members,<br />
M.Phil and PhD scholars of IAP, CCP and DLIS PU to enable them to understand qualitative research and various applications<br />
of qualitative research analysis software (NVivo). Sixty two scholars attended this workshop.<br />

University-FAST, Karachi Campus organized a Seminar on “Managing Data: bibliographic standards and formats in<br />

Anis Ahmed, delivered his keynote address to more than 40 participants of national symposium. On third day of the symposium,<br />

Dr. Rubina Bhatti, Chairperson, DLIS, and the students of Ph.D class at DLIS have taken the initiative of delivering<br />
lectures about creating awareness regarding book reading among school students. On April 29, <strong>2014</strong> first lecture of this<br />
series was delivered at Govt. Nusrat-ul-Islam Girls High School, Multan. Senior headmistress, teachers and students of<br />
the school welcomed the speakers and appreciated this initiative.<br />
On May 2, <strong>2014</strong> all heads, deans have endorsed recommendation of the DPCC of the University of the Punjab, regarding<br />
waving off NTS/GAT test in upcoming M. Phil and PhD admissions in the light of High Court's decision<br />
Mr. Abid Ali Gill has retired as Chief librarian form Quaid-e-Azam Library Bagh-e-Jinnah Lahore on May 18, <strong>2014</strong>. During<br />
his job he has served at many government organizations and has many achievements for the Quaid-e-Azam Library<br />
and Library Professionals, particularly in revival of PLA and College <strong>Librarian</strong>s Service structure. Chief Minister Punjab,<br />
Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has awarded commendation certificate to Mr. Abid Ali Gill, in recognition of his outstanding<br />
performance as a civil servant on March 15, <strong>2014</strong> along with a cash reward of Rs.50000.<br />
