Jane Howard’s Fables from the Farm Jane reiterates that when it comes to meat and carbon footprints, it’s best to buy local As the sun still sets early at this time of year, a typical late afternoon sees me coming in from the farm, wellies off, kettle on and tuned in to the radio (unless the kids are at home, in which case the kitchen is filled with surround sound thanks to Spotify and Blue Tooth, both of which belong to a perplexing brave new world I don’t understand). Anyhow, they weren’t (at home) so I was listening to Costing the Earth, an early evening Radio 4 programme about man’s impact on this planet, when a piece came on about why we should all give up on the beef if we really want to make a difference. Aaaaagh that old chestnut. I was so annoyed that I rang the programme and harangued some poor researcher for a good twenty minutes, and I was not alone. The following week the piece ran again with a more balanced view thanks to an unusually large number of listeners who had called in. In case you missed it, the argument goes like this... Over the past 50 years, UK meat consumption has risen dramatically with livestock farming subjected to increasing industrialization driven by the need to produce meat cheaply and quickly. Before that all our beef came from breeds of native British cattle, raised by grazing fields of grass in the summer and then eating hay, also made on the farm, “Over the past 50 years, UK meat consumption has risen dramatically” during the winter. Low impact stuff. Today this form of production has been largely replaced by fast growing continental bred cattle that are raised in covered barns and fed on a high protein diet – the mainstay of which is soya often grown in what was formerly tropical rain forest. Raising beef in this fashion requires over 15,000 litres of water to produce 1 kilogram of beef, results in high emissions of greenhouse gases (from the cow and the process) and creates a fairly tasteless, nutrient deprived product. But it’s quick and it’s cheap. Luckily here in the Weald the soil and the terrain don’t lend themselves to large scale industrialised farming so we are fortunate to still have one of the country’s greatest concentrations of small traditional grassland livestock farms. This method of farming has many advantages and should be cherished. Grazing animals return nutrients and organic matter back to the ground as they pass by and reduce the need for artificial fertilisers made from non-renewable sources of energy. Pasture farms have a much greater diversity of flowers, insects, birds and mammals. The carbon footprint of grass farms is significantly lower than that of farms where cereal crops are grown to feed the animals. Grassland helps to capture and store carbon so less is released into the air to harm the atmosphere. And in addition to the environmental argument, eating grass-fed meat sourced from a local supplier also means a much better quality of life for the cows, more complex and delicious flavours for you and healthier local economies. And yes it will cost more but the simple solution to that is to eat less of it. Mindful of this and other matters, we are about to start calving and deliver a whole new generation of Sussex cattle onto the farm and I wonder what the future will hold for them and us. Brexit? Subsidies or not? More TB controls? One could get rather down hearted by it all, but a trip down to the cow shed usually does the trick. Contentment is the essence of cows and is very contagious. Spending time with them is very therapeutic and a great escape from the big issues and the bloomin’ surround sound!
