The Sexual Life of Savages
Malonowski
A rare First Edition of the desired London issue
1929. Bronislaw Malinowski’s landmark book about
the sexual life of the people of the Trobriand
Islands. Papua New Guinea.
Complete with map and many photographic illustrations.
Malinowski gives a detailed description of the
social organisation of sexuality (social
rites, partner choice etc). Tracing the
Trobriand lifecycle from birth through
puberty, marriage and death.
At the time of publication chapters such
as “Lovemaking and the Psychology of
Erotic Life” which includes “The Conversations
of Two Lovers” and “Erotic
Approaches” were considered rather
racy requiring this book to be issued
with a special notice indicating to
booksellers that it was a work reserved
for academic and research purposes.
Malinowski argues that the unusual “cooperative”
lifestyle of the Trobriand
Islanders provided proof that the Freudian
Oedipus Complex is not universal. A useful rule.
Price $190.00
Nyanza Under sail and the Wreck of the Nyanza and 14 full page
The voyage takes in … the Azores, Trinidad, Uruguay (A Swiss
shooting), Juan Fernandez (Voyager’s favourite place and Alexander
Selkirk), Peru (a dance and a bullfight), Easter Island,
many excursions and details),
on to the Kamschatka Peninsula
and the fur trade, back
to the Marshall Islands and
the Carolines.
wrong … the sailing-master’s
strange errors in navigation …
a terrible disaster … the yacht
ashore … The Nyanza doomed
… disturbed conditions …
witness warfare … the end of
the Nyanza … loss of collection of curiosities … dishonesty
and arrest of Joaquim …. recovery of stolen
articles … etc.
Headhunting in The Solomon Islands
A First edition 1942 of Caroline Mytinger’s
well written and highly regarded book about
the Solomon Islands.
Mytinger (1897-1980) was an American
portrait painter and a truly independent
woman. She was a noted beauty and had
modelled for Charles Dana Gibson.
In the 1920’s she decided to travel with a friend Margaret
Warner to the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea. This
is one of two book resulting from those expeditions. In her
writing she records
important ethnographic
detail describing individuals
with great respect
bordering on affection.
On returning to the USA the art she
produced was exhibited first by famed
anthropologist Margaret Mead.
