Sustainability Report
2016
We are pleased to communicate through this report the results of 2016 sustainability efforts.
This year we harvested the seeds of sustainability that we have sown throughout our
operation. In order to create unique and sustainable experiences, we live day by day commitment to
conserve the environment, to promote the economic and social development of the communities
where we operate and preserve the Mayan heritage.
2016 was a year of growth and evolution in Alltournative. We re-launched Emotions Native
Park establishing an environmentally friendly operation with the 400 hectares of jungle, 390 of
these are conservation areas. We also took on Snorkel Native Park, spreading our environmental
commitment to the reefs and marine life. We immediately adopted measures for the adequate
management of solid waste and for water saving, we implemented cleaning days of nearby roads
and we offered courses to the staff among other actions. Finally, we recently launched the
Chichén Itzá Cenote Maya expedition, an offer to visit the wonder of the world in an uncrowded
way, with clear differentiators of quality and sustainability.
We continue to implement EarthCheck’s environmental management system, which allowed us
to measure the performance of our best practices, continue the action plan and have a strict
international reference framework to compare the sustainability of our operation. This report is
based on the EarthCheck face-to-face audit results. We have integrated quantitative indicators
of the main environmental and social achievements, as well as the actions of the Water Centinels
–Centinelas del Agua- a civil association, part of our social responsibility arm in environmental
educational programs and the protection of the aquifer.
In addition to the EarthCheck Silver Certification, for the fourth consecutive year, we received
the “Distinctive S” by the Ministry of Tourism and the “Recognition of Best Practices for Linkage
to the Community” delivered by CEMEFI (Mexican Center for Philanthropy) . Likewise, we
joined the Agreement for Sustainability of the Yucatan Peninsula (ASPY 2030), by signing the
first Declaration of the Private and Financial Sector for Sustainability of the Yucatan Peninsula
with the objective of joining efforts to achieve zero deforestation for the Yucatan Peninsula, by the
year 2030, to promote Mayan biocultural landscapes and to obtain advances in green economy.
We hope that by reading this information, you can appreciate the efforts of hundreds of
collaborators committed to safeguard the natural wealth of Mexico, to leave a positive mark as a
legacy for future generations.
FOUR YEARS WITH SILVER LEVEL
EARTHCHECK CERTIFICATION
Committed to the environment and the
communities where we operate, we
decided to implement the environmental
management system aligned to the
international standards of EarthCheck,
a globally recognized organization that
certifies sustainability in the tourism
industry. For the fourth consecutive
year, we have achieved the silver level of
EarthCheck after receiving the on-site
audits of the destinations evaluated and
have implemented the actions necessary
to comply with the certification guidelines.
The Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR in
spanish) recognizes the methodology of
EarthCheck, which is why we were endorsed
with the “Distinctive S” (for sustainability).
Once again, we share the conclusions that
prove to be very positive, since most of the
indicators evaluated exceeded the baseline
of conformity and we were praised for the
qualification obtained in “Contributions to
the Community”. Likewise, our efforts to
preserve the ecosystem, promote Mayan
culture and improve education in mayan
communities were recognized.
This report breaks down the improvements
implemented in the five areas covered by
the action plan for sustainability: Energy
Consumption, Water Consumption,
Waste Generation, CO2 Emissions and
Commitment to the Community.
BEST PRACTICES SUMMARY
Sterilization and vaccination of dogs in
rural communities.
Contribution to promote sport in mayan
communities.
Replacement of non-recyclable vessels
with biodegradable ones.
Recognition for Corporate Social
Responsibility for “Linkage with the
Community”.
ENERGy
During the audit, the program was shown to ensure
energy efficiency and the awareness campaign with
employees.
In 2016 we achieved the goal of reducing energy
consumption by 6.37% thanks to the implementation
of the following strategies:
Change of lighting with LED technology
in locations. Especially in the offices where
95% of the lighting use is LED, achieving
savings of 4% of annual consumption.
Purchase and change of air conditioners
to Inverter system with which we optimize
energy and reduce the carbon footprint.
Preventive maintenance program and
equipment shutdown and power-up
program.
We joined the WWF initiative “Hour
of the Planet” and added to the 137
collaborators who committed, we saved
100.2 kwh, the equivalent of 45.7 kilos of
CO2. According to the environmenntal
calculator, this would correspond to
planning 64 trees. We also extended
the invitation to participate, to various
agencies representatives, who accepted
the global challenge as well.
WATER
We achieved 10% of savings in water consumption by
adopting the following measures:
Washing vans in Playa del Carmen with Karcher
system.
Motorcycle washing in Emotions and Unimog
trucks in Jungla Maya with Karcher system.
Review and maintenance of bio-digesters and
wetlands minimizing the impact of wastewater
in the locations. We achieved a 100% full-on
operation in Emotions and Cenote Maya, and
an 80% performance in the Mayan Encounter
locations.
Installation of dry urinals and low flow faucets
in the new Snorkel Native Park location,
saving 25,000 liters of water per year. We also
maintained cisterns and toilets to eliminate
leaks.
Maintenance to the Wastewater Treatment
Plant, which treats up to 6m3 of water a day that
is used in irrigation.
WE ACHIEVED
10%
OF SAVINGS
IN WATER
CONSUMPTION
WASTE MANAGEMENT
The auditors recognized our efforts on recycling and waste
reduction. The qualification obtained, after the measurement
in all our expeditions, placed us as Regional Leader on "Waste
sent to the Landfill".
In 2016 we achieved the following objectives:
In Cenote Maya 9.8 tons of waste was transformed into
compost used in the organic orchard. A vane for water
extraction and irrigation system was installed. The vane
and a new harvest allowed the orchard to increase up to
40% its production, obtaining almost 3 tons of fruits
and vegetables that were consumed by visitors and
collaborators. Also in the Mayan Encounter locations,
organic waste is used by the locals to feed their farm
animals.
In Emotions Native Park, solid waste was reduced by
15% thanks to an incinerator, preventing 30% of the
waste from being sent to the municipal landfill, which,
in addition to being a burn with less impact, eliminates
pollution from transporting such waste. 20% of the
organic waste was used on our farm for our pigs and
chickens, as well as for making compost that is used in
our organic orchard.
We recycle 80% of PET waste: in Emotions about 1.4
tons of plastic were recycled, 3 tons were recycled
in Cenote Maya. In each location clean points were
constructed that contemplate the separation PET
plastic, aluminum, cardboard and paper.
MAYA AND EMOTIONS
CO2 EMISSIONS
EarthChecks ‘s audit places us above the regional
average. To reduce CO2 generation, in 2016
we implemented the following actions:
This year we maintained the
maximum use of our vehicles,
thanks to new trucks and adequate
logistics, we maintain the average
of 13 people per van.
Preventive maintenance of all our
vans and SUVs, reaching 95% of the
plan, thus minimizing the emission
of greenhouse gases. According to
EarthCheck, this practice places us
25% above the baseline.
Ten air conditioners were changed
with R400 refrigerant which is
the most suitable.
EFFICIENCY IN MAINTENANCE
PREVENTIVE TO ALL OUR VANS
COMMITMENT TO THE COMMUNITY
The relationship between Alltournative and local communities is a commitment
to raise the quality of life, promoting education in Mayan villages, as well
as preserving Mayan traditions and culture. The efforts we make placed us as
Regional Leader in the "Contributions to the Community" in the Benchmarking
of EarthCheck.
Some achievements of 2016 are:
We remodeled the sports field of Tres Reyes, a mayan community in
Q. Roo, which was the cause of the Mayatlón event and was achieved
thanks to the participation of athletes and sponsors. This construction
benefits children and young people of the communities of Pac Chen,
Tres Reyes, Esmeralda and Nuevo Durango, encouraging them to
have an integral development taking into account the physical and
emotional well-being.
On the other hand, this year we joined the initiative of the civil
association Mi Amigo de la Calle, to carry out a three day program of
sterilization and vaccination of pets in Mayan communities. In total we
assisted 502 animals from the villages of Pac Chen, Esmeralda, Nuevo
Durango, Tres Reyes and Punta Laguna in Quintana Roo; And in
Yucatan the communities of Uspibil, Sisbichen, Chechmil and Yalcoba.
In the latter we also collected and distributed 1.5 tons of dog food.
WE REMODELED THE SPORTS
FIELD OF TRES REYES
502 ANIMALS BENEFITED WITH
THE STERILIZATION INITIATIVE
MI AMIGO DE LA CALLE
For the seventh consecutive year, as
an effort to keep the mayan tradition
alive, the Hanal Pixan (Day of Death
celebration) was held in the village
of Tres Reyes. We had a very busy
attendance of local families who
participated in the altars contest and
joined the mayan ceremony inside
the Cenote de la Vida. The turnout
allowed us to reach this goal with the
community.
During 2016 we continued the projects
that are carried out thanks to the
collaboration of the civil association
Water Centinels -Centinelas del
Agua-, our social responsibility ally for
Education, Culture and Sustainable
Development objectives in Mayan
communities.
Finally, we contribute with small
actions to brighten the infants of
the communities where we operate,
celebrating the Three Kings Day. We
delivered toys, we had the participation
of a Storyteller. Later on we received
a donation of sports goods and gear
for the young athletes. And we also
coordinated a donation of furniture
for Pac Chen’s elementary school.
SEVENTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR
HANAL PIXAN CELEBRATION
CONTINUED THE PROJECTS
WITH CENTINELAS DEL AGUA
CONSERVATION OF
THE ENVIRONMENT
This year we continued to have a good rating
on pesticide products. During the audit, it
was verified that the chemicals used are mostly
biodegradable, especially cleaning and various
detergents. While the pesticides used are
essentially ecofriendly and all were approved.
Alltournative is committed to water preservation,
therefore we support and participate in the
Solidarity Basin Committee, in conjunction
with several state enterprises and three levels of
government.
We are proud to contribute to the conservation
of nature in the destinations we operate. At the
moment with our excursions we contribute to
the preservation of nine cenotes, three sections
of the reef of the National Park of Puerto Morelos
and 7,631 natural hectares.
ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL
SUSTAINABILITY POLICY
At Alltournative we create unique and sustainable experiences
through 13 expeditions and 4 eco-parks that offer a high cultural and
natural contact. We operate in exclusive locations, serving the visitors
in small groups and with the support of a team of highly trained and
committed people.
The five Business Units of our operation are: Encuentro Maya in
Mayan communities of the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas, Cenote
Maya Native Park in Yucatan, Jungla Maya Native Park near Tulum,
Emotions Native Park in Playa del Carmen and Snorkel Native Park
in Puerto Morelos.
At Alltournative we recognize that different activities of adventure
and culture can generate negative impacts on the environment and
the community if they are not managed in the proper way. We are
committed to minimize the environmental impact where we operate,
so we implemented an environmental management system that
meets the requirements of EarthCheck business standards. This
way we will improve our tourist recreation practices permanently, in
accordance with current legislation.
In addition to conservation of the environment, we seek to preserve
the mayan heritage and generate economic and social development
in our destinations. We provide training and employment at all levels
for locals. We promote the purchase of products and services in local
markets, in accordance with the principles of fair trade. We implement
community projects to promote education in rural communities.
Alltournative is committed to complying with the legislation and
achieving the best level of our practices. To this end, we encourage
all staff to become involved in sustainability and designate our
Operations Manager, Fabian Arriaga, as coordinator of EarthCheck,
who will be responsible, together with all our collaborators, for
improving the environmental and social sustainability performance
of our operation.
