DIOCESAN NEWS
New leadership and new vision for Parramatta Mercies
ON 8 DECEMBER, following elections
at their recent General Chapter,
the leadership of the Congregation
of the Sisters of Mercy Parramatta was
passed to Sr Mary Louise Petro RSM.
Sr Mary Louise is only the 12th sister to
hold the leadership role in Parramatta since
December 1888 when the nine newly arrived
pioneer sisters from Ireland elected Mother
Clare Dunphy as their first leader.
Sr Mary Louise has been deeply
involved in the Mercy mission in the
Diocese of Parramatta for more than 30
years, particularly through the visioning
and founding of Mamre Homestead at
Orchard Hills.
Members of the Congregation Council
elected to support Sr Mary Louise are Sr
Maria Lawton RSM (Congregation Vicar),
Sr Margaret Jones RSM, Sr Patricia Bolster
RSM and Sr Margaret Sheppard RSM.
The contemporary vision and purpose of
the congregation is reflected in the words of
the 2016 Chapter Statement:
‘Mindful that we are called by the world
and the church at this particular time in
history to hear the cry of the earth and the
cry of the poor, we will continue to respond
mercifully to both.’
Further, the sisters declared:
New leader and council (from left): Margaret Jones, Maria Lawton, Mary Louise Petro, Margaret Sheppard, Patricia Bolster.
‘We will open our hearts to the cries of the
poor using our energies, gifts and resources
to address violence and discrimination,
especially for women and children,
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
Peoples, displaced persons, minority groups,
the homeless, those suffering hardship
because of poverty and those affected by
injustice within the Church.
‘Enriched by the fruits of the Year of
Mercy and the encyclical Laudato Si’ and
informed by the interaction of science,
theology and spirituality, the congregation
members also declare:
‘We wish to live contemplatively, as active
ecclesial women, allowing ourselves to be
drawn deeper into the dynamic Mystery at
the heart of life and matter.
‘We will enjoy and celebrate Earth’s beauty
and bounty and her many species. We will
Mercy-ing App 2017
honour our duty to love and care for her and
add to her wellbeing wherever possible.
‘We will live simply, in a way that takes
into account the fragility of Mother Earth,
by using her resources sparingly and, where
possible, living with less.
‘We will protect the rights of the natural
world and make practical efforts to stem the
hurtful effects of climate change, pollution
and the throw away mentality.’
