WCA has a priority to reduce the amount of waste that is deposited at 

our landfills. They offer recycling services to businesses and residential

Trash days are every Wednesday and Saturday. 

Tips: 

• Have trash out the night before your service day 

• Allow clear and easy access to the containers 

• All trash must be bagged and should be placed in cans, this helps 

keep animals from getting into your trash and making a mess, for 

which WCA is not responsible for 

• Dogs should be properly restrained 

• All needles/sharps should be sealed in a metal or heavy plastic 

container

NEIGHBORHOOD SAFETY AND FRIENDLY REMINDERS 

When walking your pets, please keep them leashed and please clean 

up their waste. 

Keep your car doors locked and keep your porch lights on to deter criminals 

from breaking into your car. 

It is illegal to park within 30 ft. of a stop sign, within 15 ft. of a fire hydrant, 

blocking a sidewalk, on the curb or sidewalk or horizontal in your driveway. 

When parking in a cul-de-sac, the passenger side wheels should 

be within 18 inches of the curb, it is illegal to park any other side of the 

vehicle towards the curb. Make sure your visitors park correctly so they 

do not get cited for illegal parking. 

ATVs, dirt bikes, pocket rockets, scooters and other motorized vehicles 

that are not street legal are subject to citation and your own risk. No 

motorized vehicles are allowed around the water retention areas (such 

as the track) as posted on the signs by Harris County Flood Control,

A study from the University of Scranton determined that only 8 

percent of people actually achieve their resolutions for the year. 

That same study found that by January 15 th the number of people 

keeping their resolutions has already dropped to 71 percent. Why

THE LEGEND OF ST. VALENTINE 

The history of Valentine’s Day-and the 

story of its patron saint-is shrouded in 

mystery. We do know that February 

has long been celebrated as a month 

of romance and that St. Valentine’s 

Day, as we know it today, contains 

vestiges of both Christian and ancient 

Roman tradition. But who was Saint 

Valentine and how did he become 

associated with this ancient rite? 

The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints 

named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One 

legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during 

the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided 

that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and 

families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing 

the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to 

perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s 

actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. 

VALENTINE’S DAY - BY THE NUMBERS

Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for 

attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons, 

where they were often beaten and tortured. According to one 

legend, an imprisoned Valentine actually sent the first “valentine”

his jailor’s daughter-who visited him during his confinement. 

Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter signed 

“From your Valentine,” an expression that is still in use today. 

Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the 

stories all emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic andmost 

importantly-romantic figure. By the Middle Ages, perhaps 

thanks to this reputation, Valentine would become one of the 

most popular saints in England and France.

The CFISD Mentor Program is a cooperative effort of volunteers 

from businesses, faith-based and/or non-profit organizations, the 

community and the school district designed to encourage students 

(elementary through high school) to finish school and focus on future 

education and career goals. A mentor is a suitable role model 

committed to helping a student with his/her academic and social 

development. Mentors meet with students one-on-one for approximately 

30 minutes each week. Currently, over 600 mentors are 

matched with students. 

To become a mentor, you must attend a training session (REGISTER), 

complete a global volunteer/mentor application and consent to a 

criminal history record check. Training Sessions - Registration is 

REQUIRED.

STEPS FOR STUDENTS: 

A 5K RUN/WALK 

Are you a runner who enjoys family-friendly 

races? Are you an alumnus 

of a parochial school? Do your children, 

grandchildren or children of friends attend 

a parochial school? Do you like to 

have fun with 10,000+ plus people? If you 

answered yes to any of these questions 

or even if you didn’t, the 2017 Steps for 

Students 5k Race/Walk is for you. Steps 

for Students is a 5k USA Track and Field Association sanctioned race 

which benefits Catholic education in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. 

Held every year in February, Steps for Students has 

grown to include over 10,000 participants, filling the streets around 

the Co-Cathedral with runners, walkers, families, kids and adults. 

Each Catholic school in the Archdiocese has its own team which you 

can join or donate to. Race Day begins with a sunrise Mass at the 

Co-Cathedral followed by the race itself. In 2017, the race will take 

a new, East-West direction under I69, but it will still begin and end 

at the Co-Cathedral. Afterward, you can enjoy the Post Race Party 

in the nearby Race Day Village. All donations and registration fees 

(minus a $3 fee) go directly to your designated school, where they 

can be used to help fund scholarships, improve the campus, add to 

the educational experience of the students or whatever is needed 

or desired. If running and getting up early is not your thing, there is 

even a Snooze option. You can also sponsor your favorite runner or 

school by simply making a donation. 

The date for the 2017 Steps for Students 5k Race/Walk is Saturday, 

February 18, 2017. The sunrise Mass begins at 6:30 AM with the race 

itself beginning at 8 AM. Registration is currently underway, but the 

last day to register at the low price of $15 (which includes a t-shirt) is 

February 1, 2017. After that, registration increases to $25, so register 

early. Steps for Students is a great way to get out, get some exercise, 

see our beautiful city with your own eyes and make some new friends, 

all the while supporting Catholic education and the wonderful opportunities 

it provides to students of all backgrounds and faiths. For

FUN FAMILY EVENT BENEFITS TRAUMA VICTIMS 

Volunteers have been planning this year’s “Running for Hearts” 

annual 5K Family Fun Run and Walk. This fun-filled event will take 

place on March 25, 2017 and features a timed 5K trail run, a one 

mile family fun walk (strollers welcome), children’s activities, local 

vendors and more. Participants will receive a swag bag, a race day 

t-shirt and are invited to an after-race celebration featuring a DJ, food 

and a few surprises. Prizes for participants include race winners and 

fund raising winners. 

Northside Christian Church (20250 Kuykendahl in Spring) is hosting 

this year’s fundraiser, with proceeds going to support Shield Bearer

Houston Audubon Docent Guild sponsors 4 owl prowls for the 2016- 

17 season. Owl prowls begin with a lively program on owls including 

an opportunity to meet live, rehabilitated owls followed by a walk in

The Northwest Flyers Youth Track Club will celebrate 

its 30 th Anniversary Season by hosting its annual 

free Registration/Orientation breakfast on Saturday,

interested in joining for the 2017 track season. The 

breakfast starts promptly at 8:30 AM at the Cypress 

Creek Christian Community Center Forum located at

RESOURCES TO HELP THOSE CARING 

FOR A LOVED ONE AT HOME 

If you provide home-based care to a loved one, you are not alone. 

Millions of Americans provide unpaid family care every year. 

Being a caregiver can be overwhelming, particularly if you are juggling 

other responsibilities, such as working or raising a family. 

Knowing where to turn for help can make a difference -- both in the 

quality of care your loved one receives and in lessening the stress 

and responsibilities on you. 

Where to Go for Assistance: Elder Care Support. If the person you are 

providing care for is 65 or older, there are many resources available 

to you. One of the first stops to make is the U.S. Administration on 

Aging (AoA), which can be found online at www.aoa.gov. The AoA is 

dedicated to helping “elderly individuals maintain their dignity and 

independence in their homes and communities.” 

The AoA also maintains a website called the Eldercare Locator 

(www.eldercare.gov) that can help caregivers find local agencies 

that provide home and community-based services such as transportation, 

meals, home care and support assistance. Other helpful 

online resources: 

The Medicare website (www.medicare.gov) details the various types 

of home health care services that are covered under Medicare and 

furnishes tools designed to help those in need of care choose home 

health care providers. Be sure to access the booklet “Medicare and 

Home Health Care.” 

ElderCarelink (www.eldercarelink.com) is a referral service consisting 

of over 50,000 senior care providers across the United States 

and includes nursing homes, assisted living facilities, adult daycare 

and home care services. 

The Visiting Nurse Association of America (VNAA) website (www. 

vnaa.org) has a database of visiting nurses in your area. The VNAA is 

an association of individuals who provide cost-effective health care 

to the elderly and the disabled. 

If your loved one is a veteran, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs 

(www.va.gov) provides a detailed listing of VA health care benefits. 

Additional services can be obtained from the nonprofit Disabled 

American Veterans (www.dav.org), including claims assistance and 

transportation to VA hospitals. 

The consumer-facing site of the National Association for Home Care 

and Hospice (www.nahc.org/consumer) offers guidance and resources 

to help caregivers find services in their area. Both the National 

Cancer Institute (www.cancer.gov) and Cancer.Net (www.cancer.net) 

have extensive sections devoted to caregivers that include guidance 

on finding support services, including home health care. 

Where to Go for Assistance: Caregiver Support. The National Family 

Caregivers Association (NFCA) has a wealth of resources for caregivers 

at its Web site (www.thefamilycaregiver.org), including an 

online support network and a library of helpful tips on topics ranging 

from reducing stress to care management techniques. Other resources 

include: 

The Family Caregiver Alliance (www.caregiver.org) started as a 

small task force created to assist San Francisco-based caregivers. It 

has now grown into a national organization dedicated to advancing 

the development of high-quality, cost-effective programs for caregivers 

in every state. 

AARP (www.aarp.org) has a number of online communities devoted 

to caregivers, including those specific to loved ones who are suffering 

from cancer and Alzheimer’s. There is no age requirement to 

participate in any of AARP’s communities. 

The National Alliance for Caregiving (www.caregiving.org) also has 

online resources to help those who are providing help to others, 

including its Family Caregiving 101 site (www.familycaregiving101. 

org), which offers education and support. 

The average family caregiver works either full or part-time - in addition 

to nearly 20 hours of care per week. Those responsibilities really 

add up. So do your best to heed the advice of the many advocacy 

groups encouraging caregivers to carve out some time to take care 

of themselves, both physically and mentally.

LA LECHE LEAGUE BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP 

La Leche League is an international nonprofit, nonsectarian organization 

dedicated to providing education, information, support and 

encouragement to women who want to breastfeed. Breastfeeding is 

a simple and natural process, but you may need support and information 

on the correct positioning of the baby at the breast, working and 

breastfeeding, avoiding problems and overcoming any difficulties that 

may occur. Knowing other women who have breastfed their babies can 

be helpful and reassuring. Having accurate, up-to-date information is 

also important. Attending La Leche League meetings can help you learn 

about breastfeeding from other nursing mothers. At these monthly 

meetings, mothers share not only their questions and concerns but also 

the benefits and joys of breastfeeding. Being in touch with La Leche 

League can give you the network of support you need.

and Crowns and end the evening with a Parade and sing-a-long as we 

bury our Alleluias in preparation for Lent. Shrove Tuesday is a day of 

celebration as well as penitence, because it’s the last day before Lent. 

Lent is a time of abstinence, of giving things up. So Shrove Tuesday came 

about as the last chance to indulge yourself and to use up the foods 

that weren’t allowed in Lent. Giving up foods: but not wasting them. In 

the old days there were many foods that observant Christians would 

not eat during Lent: foods such as meat and fish, fats, eggs and milky 

foods. So that no food was wasted, families would have a feast on the 

shriving Tuesday and eat up all the foods that wouldn’t last the forty 

days of Lent without spoiling. The need to eat up the fats gave rise to 

the French name Mardi Gras; meaning fat Tuesday. Pancakes became 

associated with Shrove Tuesday as they were a dish that could use up 

all the eggs, fats and milk in the house with just the addition of flour.

You are invited to St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church’s Shrove Tuesday Pancake 

Supper on February 28 th from 5:30-7 PM. We will eat pancakes and 

play bingo! Shrove Tuesday originated during the Middle Ages. Food 

items like meats, fats, eggs, milk and fish were regarded as restricted 

during Lent. To keep such food from being wasted, many families would 

have big feasts on Shrove Tuesday. The English tradition of eating pancakes 

on Shrove Tuesday came about as a way to use as much milk, 

fats and eggs as possible before Ash Wednesday began. In France, the 

consumption of all fats and fatty foods on this day coined the name 

“Fat Tuesday” or Mardi Gras. 

You are also invited to the Ash Wednesday services at St. Cuthbert 

Episcopal church on March 1 st at 6:30 AM, 4:30 PM and 7 PM. All services 

have Holy Communion and the imposition of ashes. The 4:30 PM service 

is designed for children and their families. Ash Wednesday marks the 

beginning of the season of Lent, which is dedicated to reflection, prayer 

and fasting in preparation for Easter. 

Lenten Study: Forty Days in the Force 

Join St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church on Wednesday nights March 8 th 

through April 5 th , from 6:30-7:30 PM for our Lenten series, Forty Days in 

the Force. All ages are invited to participate. We will explore the many 

spiritual themes that weave throughout the Star Wars films. From the 

Force to the dark side, the issues presented in the films have a moral 

and spiritual complexity that, if paid attention to, can help us better 

understand our place in the world and our relation to others and to 

God. Through Forty Days in the Force we hope to see the challenges and 

victories in our everyday Christian life. There will always be a teacher 


and a student and there will always be evil, but thanks to God and his 

Son, there will always be good and we will always have a purpose. 

Nursery will be provided for infants and toddlers. Star Wars activities 

will be provided for preschoolers. Those ages 6 through 106 will explore 

the force together.

HOW MUCH DO YOU KNOW ABOUT OUR NATIONAL SYMBOL?

Against Benjamin Franklin’s wishes, the Bald Eagle became our national symbol in 1782 and by 1970, they were nearly extinct. There are 

several reasons for this. It was legal to hunt eagles for sport and the long-held belief that eagles picked up lambs and children with their 

talons was another reason to kill the birds. Since the diet of the eagle is mostly fish, eagles were killed to protect fishing grounds. The use 

of pesticides proved disastrous to the survival of the eagles. The chemicals collected in the fish that were eaten by the birds. These chemicals 

severely limited their ability to reproduce and when they did produce, the egg shells were very thin and weak. The chemical DDT was 

restricted in 1972. When restrictions were put in place and DDT was banned, the eagle population began to rebound. It was removed from 

the US government’s list of endangered species in 1995 and went from being classified as endangered to threatened. In 2007 it was de-listed 

and has been assigned a risk level of “Least Concern.” 

Bald eagles mate for life but recent research suggests there may be an occasional “divorce” and if a mate dies, an eagle will “remarry.” They 

work together to construct the largest nest of any North American bird which they return to every year. The work to build the nest is what 

actually “cements” their bond. Typically the nests are 5 to 6 feet in diameter and 2 to 4 feet wide and since they tend to use the same nest 

every year, the nest can continue to get a little bigger every year. They prefer to nest in old growth at least 65 feet high, near open water 

and away from human habitation but have been seen in populated areas. 

Because the Bald Eagle is our national symbol, it has been given protection by the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. The Act prohibits 

anyone, without a permit issued by the Secretary of the Interior, from “taking” bald eagles. Taking is described to include their parts, nests 

or eggs, molesting or disturbing the birds. The Act provides criminal penalties for persons who “take, possess, sell, purchase, barter, offer 

to sell, purchase or barter, transport, export or import, at any time or any manner, any bald eagle ... [or any golden eagle], alive or dead or 

any part, nest or egg thereof.” 

In the winter of 1999, a pair of Bald Eagles decided to make The Woodlands their home. Normally staying away from populated areas, 

these eagles didn’t seem to mind the noise and traffic in the area. The eagles have returned every year and have fledged 22 eaglets. The 

Woodlands Development Company in cooperation with the US Fish and Wildlife Service developed a habitat conservation plan protecting 

their nesting area from development. 

FAST FACTS 

• The only difference in appearance between the male and the female is that she is bigger. Eagles have an average wingspan of 6 to 8 feet. 

• Bald Eagles can live up to 35 years of age. Of course, there are older Bald Eagles on record. 

• During courtship, eagles will soar into the air, chase each other, fly upside down, lock talons and take death-defying spirals back to the 

ground. This is done with both potential mates and competitors. Timing is everything! Poor timing can result in death for both birds. 

• They lay 1 to 3 eggs and incubation takes about 35 days. The eggs hatch a few days apart in the order they were laid. It can take 

12-48 hours for them to hatch. 

• It’s not uncommon for the first-born to kill the smaller one. Parents do not intervene. 

• 40% of young eagles don’t survive their first flight. 

• They reach full adult size at 2 months. Eaglets fledge at about 3 months but it takes 4 to 5 years to become an adult. 

This is when they get their distinctive white plumage. 

• The site of their first flight is where they will return to nest and raise their young. 

• Once fledged, the young ones will remain around the nest for up to 9 weeks learning to fly and hunt. The parents will continue to feed them. 

• Bald Eagles have 7,000 feathers.

these parents tend to the eaglets. TWRC Wildlife Center is a 35-year-old 501(C)(3) organization that rehabilitates injured orphaned and

Center. Located at 8440 Greenhouse Road, the center is now open

• Finish pruning roses. Weed and cultivate lightly all beds. Replenish mulch as needed. 

• Control early spring insects like thrips on glads and aphids on young tender growth. 

Spray with Malathion, Diazinon or Orthene. 

• At the end of February: peach, apple and pear fruit must be thinned to insure quality 

production at harvest. 

• Give groundcovers a haircut. They will spread faster. 

• Divide daylilies, daisies and other perennials now.

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know 

your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. 

Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting 

hurt trying to avoid the animal. 

Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the 

unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to 

have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” 

Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 

1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is 

held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 

2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle

or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained.

5 STEPS TO A HAPPIER HEALTHIER PET 

1. Protect your pet from extreme weather (heat, cold, rain, etc.). 

2. Keep indoors or in a fenced yard and on a leash when walked. 

3. Make sure they’re up to date with vaccinations. 

4. Always make sure they’re wearing identification, so they 

can be returned to you if lost. 

5. Spay or neuter your pet.

SCOOPAGE PET POOPAGE 

It may not be a fabulous way to walk, but please have courtesy to 

please scoop when your pet poops during your walks. Throughout the 

community trails, you will find areas to toss your pet’s poopage and in 

some areas, there are also bags. Carry your own grocery bags - you’ll be 

recycling at the same time! Many of your neighbors work hard with their 

lawncare and landscaping. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery 

bag or anything else. Picking up after your pets shows your respect for 

every homeowner and our beautiful community. Pet feces damages 

lawns and many residents are working hard to maintaining their grass! 

PREVENT EXCESSIVE BARKING! 

Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find relief 

in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity. Nothing is as 

annoying as incessant barking-even for dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper 

or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas to keep 

the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you! 

• Training. Training not only helps your dog, 

you’ll be surprised how much it helps you, 

too. You may get some insight into why your 

dog barks so much, or what it is trying to communicate. 

• Citronella collars. 

• Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an 

outspoken dog indoors 

or confining it to a crate cuts down on the disturbance 

to neighbors. 

• For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close drapes 

to help muffle 

street noise, or leave a radio on to mask it. 

• Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need 

companionship-a cat, bird or another dog. Consider 

a mid-day visit from a pet-sitting service or drop your 

pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care facility 

once or twice a week.

RICH BANANA BREAD 

You could make this on National Banana Bread Day February 23 rd ! 

INGREDIENTS: 

1/2 cup butter, melted 

1 cup white sugar 

2 eggs 

1 teaspoon vanilla extract 

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 

1 teaspoon baking soda 

1/2 teaspoon salt 

1/2 cup sour cream 

1/2 cup chopped walnuts 

2 medium bananas, sliced 

DIRECTIONS: 

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9x5 inch 

loaf pan. In a large bowl, stir together the melted butter and sugar. 

Add the eggs and vanilla, mix well. Combine the flour, baking soda 

and salt, stir into the butter mixture until smooth. Finally, fold 

in the sour cream, walnuts and bananas. Spread evenly into the 

prepared pan. 

Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 60 minutes or until a 

toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean. Cool 

loaf in the pan for 10 minutes before removing to a wire rack to

CARROT PINEAPPLE CAKE 

You could make this on National Carrot Cake Day February 3 rd ! 

INGREDIENTS: 

2 cups all-purpose flour 

2 teaspoons baking soda 

1 teaspoon baking powder 

1 teaspoon salt 

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 

1 3/4 cups white sugar 

1 cup vegetable oil 

3 eggs 

1 teaspoon vanilla extract 

2 cups shredded carrots 

1 cup flaked coconut 

1 cup chopped walnuts 

1 (8 ounce) can 

crushed pineapple, drained 

1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese 

1/4 cup butter, softened 

2 cups confectioners’ sugar 

DIRECTIONS: 

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour 

a 9x13 inch pan. Mix flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt and 

cinnamon. Make a well in the center and add sugar, oil, eggs 

and vanilla. Mix with wooden spoon until smooth. Stir in carrots, 

coconut, walnuts and pineapple. Pour into 9x13 inch pan. Bake at 

350 degrees for about 45 minutes. Don’t panic, the center will sink 

a little. Allow to cool. To make the frosting: Cream the butter and 

cream cheese until smooth. Add the confectioners sugar and beat
