adding fun to a work out. Enjoy popular<br />

tunes as you brake a sweat! Pilates is<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered on Thursdays with class instructor<br />

Brenda Mueller. Pilates is designed to<br />

improve physical strength, flexibility, and<br />

posture. Line dancing <strong>of</strong>fered twice a<br />

week has a beginner’s class on Thursday<br />

and the regular class is on Friday. Judy<br />

and Donna Mead are the instructors.<br />

On Mondays and Wednesdays are the<br />

popular chair exercises.<br />

<strong>The</strong> mission statement for the group is<br />

{ to improve body, mind and spirit.<br />

This exercise is recommended but not<br />

limited to senior citizens with limited<br />

mobility and those recovering from<br />

knee or hip replacement. <strong>The</strong> class helps<br />

maintain a healthy range <strong>of</strong> motion,<br />

stabilize joints and improve flexibility.<br />

Instructor Gerald Victor spent 25 years<br />

in the medical field and also volunteers<br />

at Harbor Hospice. His training includes<br />

the proper way to breathe while doing<br />

the exercises. He says, “I enjoy helping<br />

people.”<br />

On one’s first visit to University Park it<br />

may not seem like a real exercise place<br />

with s<strong>of</strong>t music playing and mats in<br />

Mason’s class or those chairs in Gerald’s.<br />

But in a short time it sinks in that the<br />

Mardi Gras tree and décor, brewing c<strong>of</strong>fee<br />

and the friendly chatter are the back<br />

ground for the work that goes on here.<br />

information about “Her Place,” as we<br />

all call it. Stephanie is in charge <strong>of</strong> this<br />

facility overseen by Kip Texada, executive<br />

Harvard Medical School reported a detailed review <strong>of</strong> a study<br />

conducted by two scientists from University College in London.<br />

<strong>The</strong> two scientists tracked 18 participants for about 11.3 years to<br />

study their walking habits. At the end <strong>of</strong> the study in 2003, the<br />

scientists found that walking reduced the risk <strong>of</strong> cardiovascular<br />

events by 31%. Not all participants walked fast or walked long<br />

distances. Health improvements were seen in participants that<br />

walked only 5 1/2 minutes per day at 2 miles per hour.<br />
