HYPE
Hype, by dictionary definitions means to stimulate, excite, agitate, and
intensify.
But for us, it was more than these definitions can describe.
Making Hype Magazine was a big challenge
for us in terms of coordination, skill, and team work;
which all, I think, are something that’s been waiting
for us to work on. We lack a lot of these and we know
how our weaknesses are still very evident as we work.
We are students, we slack off, we’re lazy, and stubborn.
We stage our own rules on everything and we
battle our way to each other’s walls. But nevertheless,
we managed to actually do something that is worth
developing our abilities.
Though with lots of distractions that deteriorates even our own energies, inside
us, we in this team wanted to pick up ourselves from the force dragging us down and
thus, forming the name of this magazine as Hype. By hearing the name, it reminded us to
boost our vibes and just face every struggle that is right in front of us since a student’s life
is never easy. It encourages us to be innovative, hyping our creativity to the best that our
creative juices can produce. It inflicts positivity to boost our confidence and thinking that
no matter what, it will always be our best.
To the readers of this mag, we assure everyone that all the contents in this piece
are made from the best or our abilities as we value with utmost importance the interests of
the multimedia people as we share the topics that we all appreciate.
From the Hype Magazine team, we encourage you to join us as we push ourselves
in the pursuit for knowledge at our chosen fields in arts, film, music, and everything
that is on multimedia.
A Roadie’s tips
to be a musician
“Musicians shows a lot of passion when entertaining people, they are not
crazy people who dance in the stage acting crazy, singing like they’re going
to poop, but they are people who are loving the music and its story.”
A
A musician is a person
who is great in the art of
music and has the ability
to play instruments,
sing beautifully, and make
their own music. Musicians
shows a lot of passion when
entertaining people, they
are not crazy people who
dance in the stage acting
crazy, singing like they’re
going to poop, but they are
people who are loving the
music and its story.
Here are some tips how:
Love what you do, being a
musician requires only love
and passion in music. Regardless
of what you play it
can be your voice or instruments
like guitars and even
drums. It doesn’t go with
anything expensive but it
also takes time which is not
a pretty big deal.
Don’t let anything pull you down,
In the world of music there are
many people who will drag you
down just like bad publicity,
bad reviews, even intrigues
but never let them stop you in
doing what you do. Always
play and you will be known for
what you really are. Grab every
opportunities, Every musician
needs exposure. Do not hesitate
to be in front of many people to
perform this is the only way to
be known. Being a musician is
to entertain people, grab every
opportunities until you find
what you want to be and what
you want to do. Do not let a single
opportunity slide off your
hands because you may not
know if you don’t find out.
Believe in yourself, Always think
positive, never negative, you
are a great musician and nothing
will stop you in your way to
stardom. Never let anyone tell
you what to do, always rely on
what you feel and what you really
want because if you believe in
yourself, I guarantee you will be
known.
Always be humble, musicians are
not known for what the have or
what they have earned it’s always
about how they are in life
and how they play as musicians.
Always look back to people who
made you once you become a big
thing in the music industry.
Always be yourself, A musician
is called by many names like
king of pop, rock star, sirens and
many more but a musician must
be unique and different from the
others to make you stand out
from all of the others, never do
anything you won’t do as a musician
has to have an originality
to be successful.
“Be unique and
different from the
others to make you
stand out from all of
the others.”
Being a musician isn’t hard
because anybody can be a musician
in their own way. Some can
do things other persons don’t,
some can write emotional or
crazy songs, and play a musical
instruments as wildly as they
can but these doesn’t change
their personalities we are normal
people but we share a great love
for music and hoping that they
would somehow be known in
their own legacy as a musician.
Here are some roadie’s tips for
being a successful musician.
Picking the
right guitar that
suits your taste in music
Playing different guitars in a music shop is a great way of familiarizing yourself with each model’s
unique qualities but don’t forget to take off any objects that could scratch the guitar. A music
salesman will let you try as many guitars as you like. Your choice of guitar will usually be based
on the type of music you wish to play and the aesthetic appeal of the color and design.
Acoustic Guitars
There are two types of acoustic
guitar namely the steel-string
acoustic guitar and the classical
guitar. Steel-string acoustic guitars
have a metallic sound that is
a distinctive component of a wide
range of popular genres. The
steel-string acoustic is sometimes
referred to as a flat top. The word
top refers to the face or front of
the guitar which is called the
table. Classical guitars have a
wider neck and use nylon strings
primarily for the solo classical
guitar repertoire and its
higher technical
demands. The
classical
guitar is
sometimes
referred to
as a spanish
guitar in recognition
of
its country
of origin.
Both
types of
are
many entry-level acoustic
Electric Guitars
The electric guitar is the
workhorse of rock, blues,
jazz and pop music. They
are solid-bodied guitars
that need to be plugged
into an amplifier to be
heard adequately. The
electric guitar when
amplified has a sound
that is metallic with a
lengthy decay (sustain).
The design of
the electric guitar is
not determined by the
need for a deep resonating
body (acoustic
chamber) and this had
led to the development
of contoured and thin
bodied electric guitars.
The two most popular
designs are the Fender
Stratocaster and Gibson
Les Paul.
Electro-Acoustic Guitars
Electro-acoustic guitars
have pickups specifically
designed to reproduce
the subtle nuances
of the acoustic guitar
timbre (pronounced tam
- bre) when plugged
into an amplifier or
house PA. The Ovation
range of electro-acoustics
use under-the-saddle
piezo pickups and
a synthetic bowl-back
design. Ovation’s synthetic
bowl-back ensures
a tough construction
that stands up to the
rigours of the road and
offers less feedback at
high volumes. Ovation
were the first company
to provide on-board
equalization and this is
now a standard feature
on most electro-acoustics.
Electro-acoustic
pickups are designed
to sound neutral with
little alteration to the
organic acoustic timbre.
Ovations are instantly
recognizable with their
synthetic bowl backs
though the majority of
manufacturers adhere
to the traditional allwood
body. The Taylor
electro-acoustic range
uses the traditional
all-wood construction
and the necks of these
guitars have a reputation
for superb action
and playability. Yamaha,
Maton and many
other companies make
electro-acoustics and
the buyer is advised to
test as many models
and makes as they can
while taking note of the
unplugged and amplified
sound.
Twelve-string Guitars
The twelve-string guitar
is a simple variation of
the normal six string design.
Twelve-string guitars
have the regular six
strings and a second set
of thinner strings. Each
string of the second
set corresponds to the
note of its regular string
counterpart. The strings
form pairs and therefore
you still play the guitar
in the same manner as a
14 HypeMgzne july 2014
as a standard six-string.
Twelve-string guitars produce a brighter
more jangly tone than six-string guitars.
They are used by guitarists for chord progressions
that require thickening. Having
two strings per note makes bending notes
more difficult. The twelve-string is mainly
used as a rhythm instrument due to the extra
effort involved in playing lead guitar.
Twelve-string guitars are slightly more expensive
then their corresponding six-string
version. Studio players and professionals
will normally have a
twelve-string guitar
in their
collection for their dist
inctive sound.
Bass Guitars
The bass guitar has a long scale-length
(neck) and thick strings. These factors
create a range of notes that corresponds
to the lowest four strings of the guitar
though pitched an octave lower. The bass
is part of the rhythm section and rarely
takes a front role. Acoustic bass guitars
are available though the electric bass is
more common. The standard bass has four
strings though five and six string basses
are available which extends the range of
the instrument and allows for the formation
of fuller chords. Though the bass
guitar is the bass instrument of the guitar
family and the double-bass (upright) is the
bass instrument of the orchestral string
family their similar roles has drawn bass
players to both instruments.
The Friendship
Paradox
According to the article
entitled, Why Your Friends
Have More Friends Than
You by Julie Hanus from
the site Utne. It states that
when you list all of your
friends then ask them how
many friends they have (it
doesn’t matter who you
are and where you live,
your gender or number of
friends), you are likely to
discover that your friends
have more friends than
you do. It’s not impossible
even though friendships
are reciprocal, and it’s true.
You are more likely to be
friends with someone who
has more friends than with
someone who has fewer
friends. This is explained by
sociologist Scott L. Feld in
1991.
Julie said, “If you think
about it for a moment,
you’ll figure out the source
of this seeming paradox (although
this simple insight
did not occur to anyone
before Feld published his
paper in 1991).” I guess
it’s just natural that we are
more likely to be friends
with someone who has more
friends than with someone
who has fewer friends. I
don’t know why the world
“I don’t know why the
world works that way, but
I guess it’s supposed to
make me feel better.”
works that way, but I guess
it’s supposed to make me
feel better. Even if I don’t feel
bad.
Your friends are even richer,
happier and more popular
than you.
I’ve read another article entitled,
“’Generalized Friendship
Paradox’: MIT Proves
Your Friends Are Richer,
Happier, More Popular Than
You” by Brent Lambert from
the site Feel Guide. It states
that there are researches that
show social networks’ strong
tendency to cause depression
(from being continually
exposed to other people’s
much more exciting lives).
People’s friends on Facebook,
Twitter, and Instagram do not
actually have more richer, exciting
and happier lives. Social
scientists have presumed that
this was all the result of an illusion.
However, a new research
is contradicting that people’s
online friends may actually
be richer, happier, and more
popular than they are.
The results which explains the
mathematics behind the socalled
“generalized friendship
paradox” were published by
MIT Technological Review.
Numbers of friends people
have are distributed in a way
that follows a power law
rather than an ordinary linear
relationship, that’s why the
paradox arises. Most people
have a few friends while a
small number of people have
a lot of friends, and it’s this second
small group that causes
the paradox. In the first place,
people with lots of friends are
more likely to number among
your friends, and when they
do, they specially raise the
average number of friends
that your friends have. That’s
the reason why your friends
have more friends than you
do. But wealth, happiness, and
popularity are not represented
by the network topology.
Researchers looked at two
academic networks in which
scientists are linked if they
have co-authored a scientific
paper together to study other
july 2014
HypeMgzne 17
Social media
types of network. The chain
that links scientists and co-authors
is pretty much like a
network where the scientist is
the node in the connections. A
scientist’s co-author will have
more co-author than you
would have much like how
a network branches. They’ll
have more publications and
citations than you as well. It
turns out, number of publications
and citations meet this
criteria. And so do wealth
and happiness, too. This
makes your friends probably
more richer and happier than
you. That has important implications
for the way people
perceive themselves given
that their friends will always
seem richer, happier, and
more popular than they are.
And so the problem is likely
to be worse in social networks
where this is easier to see.
Brent said, “This might be
the reason why active online
social networking service
users are not happy,’ say
[the researchers], referring to
other research that has found
higher levels of unhappiness
among social network users.
So if you’re an active Facebook
user feeling inadequate
and unhappy because your
friends seem to be doing better
than you are, remember
that almost everybody else
on the network is in a similar
position.” I’m not really
surprised that social media
can cause depression. Everything’s
balanced anyway. If
there’s an advantage, there’s
also a disadvantage. I’m just
not sure if friendship paradox
is an advantage or disadvantage.
The Big 3 Social Networks
You Probably Should Have
On a non-depressing matter, social media definitely
lift us up, up, up in our daily lives whether you’re a
student, working individual, or whoever you are as
long as you can access the internet. There are a lot of
risks, but we will focus on the positives in this article.
So here’s the big 3 social networks you probably
should have.
Remember your old favorite friend
back in kindergarten? You want to
reconnect with him but you don’t
know anything about him right now
let alone his current location. You
still remember his name, right? So
log on Facebook and search for him.
You will find a lot of people with
the same name but with Facebook’s
updates recently, you will find him
no matter what. Before social media,
people used to send letters or
telegrams. What now? Instant messaging.
It doesn’t matter how many
“Instagram has been insta-useful to
photographers (of course) and online
entrepreneurs.”
miles you’re away from each
other, they’ll get your message
ASAP (as soon as possible). Yep,
I’m sure you’ve heard of this
before, but this I am repeating
this because I think it’s important.
The main goal of Facebook is to
connect people (before everything
else followed) and with that a lot
of connections were born.
Tweet. Wasn’t that a bird’s
sound? Since when did it become
people’s random words,
thoughts, quotes, etc. Before
social media, we had diaries/
journals (well, some). Today we
can reduce a long journal entry
into 140 characters. Twitter is not
only useful to teenagers’ anger
management problems. Some
people usually tweet rants (guilty
writer here), some people tweet
inspirational quotes, but some
people tweet news. There are
celebrities and news anchors on
Twitter. When there’s a storm and
you have no electricity but you
still have a little battery on your
smartphone, check your Twitter
and you’ll be updated with suspension
of classes, etc. Oh, and on
World Cup also.
Oh, I’m about to drink an overpriced
coffee in a very famous
coffee shop. I should insta-capture
this, insta-filler here, hashtag:
nameofcoffeeshop there, then post
it on my Instagram! But it’s not
only for #foodporn. Instagram has
been insta-useful to photographers
(of course) and online entrepreneurs.
We can do almost anything
online and shopping is
one of them. That’s why
entrepreneurs found their
way on Instagram and
made it useful to them.
They post their products,
many people would see
and many people would
buy. It’s a convenient way
especially for online shoppers
who don’t have time
to go and don’t wanna get
tired around the mall.
With this piece I
was going for
1
something moody.
I wanted a piece that mixed
something foreboding with
something a little sweet,
and I came up with the idea
of paring Victorian fashion
with a bit of voodoo flavor.
After I decided what I wanted
to paint, I put a random
color layer down because
it’s easier for me to work on
color. A white canvas is a bit
harsh to stare at after a while.
I drew everything out with a
detailed sketch in Photoshop
to get my ideas down. Of
course, I knew things could
change along the way if I
found something else that
looked or worked better.
Laying Down Lines
Once I got my lines
down, on a separate
layer I put a layer of a different
color underneath the
sketch layer to give myself
something to start with. I
formed a basic plan of color
range in my mind and I chose
a color for the background
that would go with that plan.
I laid down the basic values
and colors, but after a while
I decided I didn’t like the position
she was in, so I painted
her to face straight on. I
like to keep parts of a sketch
in low opacity and on separate
layers as I like to keep
track of where everything is
placed. Also I can then toggle
it on and off when I need it.
Once I was
happy with
her positioning,
I laid
down the
basics of the
hair. I used
red/orange
to make it
pop from
the rest of
the image
3
First Details
When painting
hair I
lay down a
dark layer
to establish
my basic hair
shape. Once I
have that layer
I choose a
slightly lighter
color, a smaller
brush and
lay out chunks
of hair. I use
shade that’s a bit lighter and use a slightly smaller
brush. I keep this whole process up throughout
the painting until I think I have it as detailed as
I want it. If I lose some of the darker areas I go
back in with the dark color and add some more
shades back into the image
“Although
I
wanted
a creepy
vibe
I also
wanted
her
to have
a sweet
look.”
4 Brushes
In this stage I added some more basic colors and
shapes for the accessories in her hair. I played a bit with
the background color and lighting as well. I also added more colors
throughout the piece. A little trick I like to use when my brush
strokes are looking a little too rough, is to use median to help them
blend a little better. At this point I was still deciding if I wanted her
to be slighting frowning or slightly smiling.
I was constantly
changing her
face and adding
more depth to the
piece. I was also
forming more of
the basic shapes
in her hair and
around her face.
I like to make
custom brushes
to achieve different
effects in
my work, mostly
on skin and in
my backgrounds.
Plus they are just
fun to make. In
this stage I added
more splotches
and spots of
texture and colors
to add more
interest; I also
blocked out a bit
of her eye shapes
as well.
5
More Details
I like to skip around the painting, so
now I jumped to painting out some of the
objects in her hair. At this point the peacock skull
didn’t have many colors in it, but I figured I would go
in with a color layer and add more colors throughout
the whole image later. I added some cinnamon sticks,
white peacock feathers, Star Anise, and some more
strange items to help pull off the voodoo vibe. I then
moved on to playing around with the background and
decided to keep it simple since the main focus had
so much detail. I decided to add a light colored line
to give off the appearance that she has a light source
behind her as well them blend a little better. At this
point I was still deciding if I wanted her to be slighting
frowning or slightly smiling.
5
Final Touches
I came back to
the image after
leaving it for a while,
to realize I had made
her face and skin tone
too harsh and dead.
Although I wanted
a creepy vibe I also
wanted her to have a
sweet look, so I added
warmth to her skin,
softened her face a bit,
and added a few more
colors here and there.
I added another layer
set to Color and applied
the colors at low opacity
so it wouldn’t be so
bold. Then I decided
to finally call the piece
finished
Replay Value
Once you beat the game in easy, normal and
hard mode, you’ll unlock 1999 mode which
makes the game whole lot tougher. You can
get new collectibles and unlock things you
didn’t before. Anyway, Elizabeth will help
you through it to make things not so difficult.
Visuals are the key aspect of the game so why
not play it again for the sake of appreciating art?
And unlike in Rapture of Bioshock which lies in
the bottom of the ocean defining how dark
and deep the city is, Columbia is rather lively
and heavenly 1912 city but rather a racist
one. And with the compelling storyline will
tempt you to play it again to understand more.
Also, there are some Downloadable Contents
to wait for, some are extensions of combat and
others are extensions of the story but is happening
at the rather lively, Bioshock’s Rapture.
A Short Guide for a Short Film
So how do you create a film that will stand out from the bunch? I have put together a short
guide to help filmmakers push their creativity and professionalism to another level.
We will try to touch every step of the long process, starting with scripting, pre-production,
production and post. We will start today where it should all begin, with an idea and a
good script!
By John Christopher Gante
STEP 1. HAVE A GOOD STORY TO TELL
Might sound silly, but those
thousands of ‘bad’ films out
there are usually driven by
‘bad’ stories. Explore originality,
people hate tackiness
or stories they’ve seen hundreds
of times, as soon as
they know where the story
40 HypeMgzne july 2014
is going they will
move on to another
short, or a video of
cats.
It’s perhaps the
hardest part of
filmmaking, because
once you have a
good idea, motivation
will get you
through the rest of
production. Writing
might also not be for
everyone, if you think
this is your case, make
someone with writing
experience write a
story for you, and then
mold it into a script.
Your script will never
Guides
be perfect at 100%, but
be sure about the story,
if you have any doubts
itmeans that it can be
better, and this is the
time to take your time
and make changes. Make
people read it, besides
your mom and girlfriend,
people that you trust to
be honest with you, but
avoid showing 20 people
because you will have too
many opinions!
Storyboard:
Disney’s Alice in Wonderland
PART 2.1 PRE-PRODUCTION: BE
READY!
A key to a great film is
to be prepared. Pre-production,
after you already
have an awesome
script written, can be the
most important part of
a successful film. Revise
your script several
times and optimize it
for shooting within your
budget and elements.
STORYBOARDING
This is where you need to
think ahead, think creatively
and plan each movement
carefully, this is what will
give your film life. And when
you think you are done, go
through it again and make
each angle and movement
better than what it is create as
many versions as you need
to! It’s something very time
consuming, but it will reward
you in the final outcome of
your film. You don’t need to
be an artist, but try to go a little
deeper than stick drawing,
if drawing is your last talent,
have someone sketch it out
for you, but make them follow
your directions closely.
SEARCH FOR ACTORS
Perhaps the most difficult part
of pre-production, finding the
perfect face for your movie.
A little word of advice, use
friends and family sparingly!
Unless of course they have a
STRONG interest in acting or
film, a person saying they can
act is one thing, but it can be
a harsh surprise if you have
never been on a set before.
Be prepared for the auditions.
Avoid having actors come in
your parents basement, the
level of professionalism and
credibility of your film starts
here. You need to make it
seem like your a studio, or if
your not, at least make it seem
like your trying. Find little
studio or office, ask a friend,
or your school, the local
july 2014
HypeMgzne 41
videos
theater would probably be
glad to help, especially if
you let their actors audition
(although in my opinion
theater actors aren’t the
best solution for on screen).
Explain to them your film,
they probably read your
script already, but talk to
them in depth about their
character and their development.
PART 2.2 PRE-PRODUCTION: KEEP
ON PREPARING!
So you got your script written,
you made some first
drafts of your storyboard,
you started looking for your
actors and started thinking
about your shooting order…
Guess what? you still got
lots of preparing to do! So
take out your headphones,
pencils, sharpeners and
sheets and let’s get started!
START LOOKING FOR MUSIC
Your film is gonna need
music, this is a good point
to start looking for a musician
that is willing to
help. Having an original
soundtrack is something
that will take your film to
the next level. You would
be surprised how many musicians
out there are looking
for opportunities like this to
get a chance to create music
for something, all you
would need is a convincing
script and clips of previous
work to lure them in.
Make sure to get someone
that has something to make
you hear also, listen to their
work and make sure their
style matches yours, or your
vision.
The Dark Knight Rises’ Creative Poster
“ Come up with
posters as soon as
you can, and create
several of them
as your production
moves on. No need
for ten of them as
people will lose
interest, a good
number is between
2 and 4.”
LOCATION SCOUTING
This is where your background
imagery of your film
will take place, so choose
your locations wisely. Spend
a few days looking for different
options, take pictures
and then compare. Think
about access and filming
difficulties of each location,
but more importantly find a
visually stunning environment,
look at lighting, colors
and textures with a great
sense of depth. Lots of your
film’s feel will come from its
environment, so don’t rush
through this research process.
POSTERS – GIVE YOUR FILM AN IMAGE
Come up with posters as
soon as you can, and create
several of them as your production
moves on. No need
for ten of them as people
will lose interest, a good
number is between 2 and 4.
Your first one does not need
to be complete, it’s more of
a tease and to show people
what your film will feel like.
You might not even have
your actor yet, but you know
what your movie is about
and the feel you are going
for, so being vague with
just the title and perhaps a
quote or log line would be
enough. This can also help
in the luring better actors,
with your film having more
credentials.
BUDGETING & SCHEDULING
You should now know everything
you need for your
film, you have your actors
and have an idea of how
long your scenes are.
Create a list of all the props
Guides
you need inside the screen, then
go through your shots and prepare
a list of mechanical props
that will make your scenes work.
Gather up your budget and look
at your options here if you have
gone over budget. Watch Ryan
Connolly’s Film Riot webisodes
to get some quick great tips on
DIY filmmaking, including this
episode on Budgeting.
TEST SHOTS (SHOOTING ORDER + LENSES)
This next step is optional, but can
be very helpful if you have the
time for it.
Go to your locations, grab standins
for your actors (one or two
will be more than enough) and
place your camera shot by shot.
Perfect your angles, movements,
focus and lenses and write down
your final adjustments on your
shooting order sheet. Don’t need
to captures the scenes perfectly,
just record a little clip of the angle,
and movement if you have,
so you can review them later on
a bigger screen to make any final
technical changes. Test anything
you can, including lighting and
sound, so you know on shooting
day that you got everything
covered.
PART 3: LIGHTS, CAMERA & ACTION!
Lets start with some technical
parts. Make sure you create a
checklist of everything you need,
especially if you are the one taking
care of all the props. And if
your not the one, make sure that
the person doing the list doesn’t
forget anything. This should also
include a mechanical list (camera,
lenses, tripod, crane, lights..) anything
that you need on the set.
For any rentals or pick ups try to
have everything in possession the
day before, if not possible, go as
early in the morning as you can.
Retouching
And don’t forget to organize transportation
of all your crew and equipment!
This can all be done a day or
two before production if you have
a vehicle, if you don’t make sure to
plan that as well.
TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOUR ACTORS!
Remember chances are they are doing
this on their free time, for fun. If
your location is in a difficult spot to
get to, make sure you have someone
go pick them up, and always offer
them the service, even if they have
their own car, at least you’ll be sure
they’ll be on time. Also don’t forget
to give them a ride back after the
days is done.
Do not forget to feed your actors
and entire crew! This will not
only make you look professional
as a production team,
but will also keep your cast
and crew happy. Shooting
days are long, and even
though you’ll be busy from
beginning to end, most of
your cast and crew will be on
stand-by waiting for hours,
so make sure you have a few
chairs and snacks to munch
on. Sandwiches and pizzas
are great for lunch breaks. If
you absolutely have no budget
for food, make sure to
warn everyone to bring their
own lunch. Last thing you
need is an actor passing out
on set!
GET SOME BEHIND THE SCENES SHOTS
Have a photographer on the
set, and if possible a second
camera to film the process.
This is at your discretion, but
remember that the more behind
the scenes material you
have the more people will gain
interest in your project. If you
don’t have an extra camera or
photographer, make a crew
member take photos with their
smart phone, and maybe some
short clips. If you can tweet
or Facebook a quick photo of
behind the scenes right away,
and try to upload the rest of
the photos on your blog, Facebook
or Tumblr that same
night.
Make sure you covered everything
and got every shot you
a quick view of your shots, go
back through them and rename
all your files (if shot on
digital DSLR), and try to keep
them numbered with the same
numbers on your storyboard,
numbering the take last, i.e.
sc01-sh02-03 (scene/shot/take).
If your take is a definite outtake,
or a that you pressed record my
mistake for 10 seconds, mark it
as -xx, but don’t delete it yet, you
never know these might come in
handy later.
MUSIC
Dealing with musicians can be
“Make
sure
you
covered
everything
and got
every
shot
you
needed.”
tricky, some musicians want visuals to start
composing, and some editors want music to
start editing. This could also depend on the
type of film you are creating, a film like Kiddo
with a soft background sound might not need
to be edited to the music, but a upbeat short
like Red Riding who depends much on the
music for build ups can benefit from editing to
beat. In any way, music is a process that you
need to think about in pre-production, at this
point you should already have it in your hands
or its in late production.
EDITING
I am not here to give you an editing class, there are plenty of tutorials that can tell you so much
more than I can. However my few important tips would be to edit your film in High Definition,
the files might be much heavier, but if you want your quality work to be noticed make sure to
work with the highest qualities, and then compress the files from there. See this guide as a good
example for configurations.
INTRO AND CREDITS
This is usually a very underestimated part of filmmaking. You have to be careful with this, especially
online, since the first thing people will see in your film is the opening titles, and if you lose
their attention with bad graphics or sub-average titles you will lose them as viewers.
PART 5: RELEASE & PROMOTION
You’ve done it! All that hard work and you finally have a film!
But don’t settle down quite yet. You still have plenty of work to do – these are times you wished
you had a producer.
MAKE YOUR CHOICE: FESTIVALS OR ONLINE?
Your film is done, you have 2 options: Either you get into the film festival run or you just go
directly to the Internet. Usually this is a decision taken before the production, but it can happen
that the direction changes after the makers have a chance to see the completed film.
Filming Tips: Camera
Techniques
By John
Christopher
Gante
1 3
So there you are holding your camera
and then you just shoot your actors without
planning on how to take them then as you
check the shot, you notice that it looks like
its lacking at something. Here are a couple
of camera techniques to give depth and
emotion in your every shot.
Distance Shots
3
Long Shot: Shot from
head to toe. Shows the entirety
of your subject and
as well the surroundings
of the subject.
Medium Shot: Shot from
head to hips.
Medium-Close up Shot:
Shot from head to chest.
Guides
Knowing these techniques and then
applying it into your film will greatly
improve the end result of that film.
Just keep in mind “the camera is the
eyes of your audience”. There’s like
a psychology with these techniques,
use them correctly and you will
probably make an award-winning
film.
4
Close up Shot: Shot from
head to shoulders.
5
Extreme Close up: Can be
shot from anything of the
subject, example the eyes
and lips and the watch
and earrings as long it
takes most of the frame of
your shot.
Angle Shots
6
Low Angle: Shot below actor’s
eye level. This makes
your subject seem larger to
your audience. A great way
to emphasize “power”.
6 7
8
7
8
9
High Angle: Shot above
actor’s eye level. This
makes your subject show
weakness to your audience
since we visually
seem the actor smaller.
Bird’s Eye View: Overhead
shot. Gives the audience a
feeling of freedom or “god’s
view” which is empowering
to the audience.
Dutch Angle: Slightly off
or unleveled shot. Shows
the audience that there
is something wrong or
weird going on.
Lifestyle
It is always been an issue for artists to have sleeping problems.
As if their stressful lives are not being tough enough,
believe it or not, these people are certified insomniacs. An
artwork may not be accomplished to its perfection overnight.
So, they might as well do it all day… until the next day.
One reason why they sort of developed these bad sleeping
habits is, well, because they cram. Artists are known as the
professional crammers, especially for students since some
of them believe that they work best under pressure and for
under some tight circumstances, their creative juices are
squeezed to its limits being able to produce the best ideas for
a project. A bad habit as it may be, they show the best outputs.
If that’s their reason or excuse, it still work either way.
CRAM SCAM
Cramming, as the internet defines
it, is “the practice of working
intensively to absorb large
volumes of informational material
in short amounts of time.”
(Wikipedia) We all know how
that looks like and how of a
hell it feels like. Educators often
disagree with this way of
work because “the hurried coverage
of material tends to result
in poor long-term retention
of material,” a phenomenon
they refer as the spacing effect.
Cramming, as we all know, artists
or not, had become more
common nowadays especially
to students. I mean, who doesn’t
cram right? Who doesn’t rush?
We’ve all had been to that point
where we almost ate powdered
coffee just to stay awake for one
night. It had been the toughest
workout that developed
that lovely instant eye shadow
beneath our eyes. Very cruel,
yes; and deadly. But hey,
you’ve never been a student if
you’ve never experience that.
It’s worth a try if you haven’t.
But cramming, as bad as its image
had shown, is still a study
technique, as Wikipedia says.
Just a negative one. Because
it forces student’s brains to
compress and jam all the information
they are reviewing
on in a short period of time,
thus, stretching their mental
capacity to its limits. And as
one article said, “Cramming
is useful in emergencies, it is
not good for long term learning.”
But it kinda looked like
‘emergencies’ are too often yes?
“We’ve all had
been to that
point where we
almost ate powdered
coffee just
to stay awake
for one night.
It had been the
toughest workout
that developed
that lovely
instant eye
shadow beneath
Lifestyle
“Instead, learn to calm your mind and let your
inner peace take place. That way, ideas will flow
more freely and will not clutter to confuse you of
which to use.”
“From time
to time, take
a break. Keep
yourself happy
and pray
while you’re
at it. If you’re
already decided
on cramming,
then
be confident
about it.”
68 HypeMgzne july 2014
As much as some would like to
avoid cramming for it is such
a tight pressure in time and
effort, we all know how unavoidable
it is. The thing is, if
you want to cram, you have to
make sure you finish the work.
That borrowed rush of adrenaline
shouldn’t be wasted; do
not dare ignore the kick of guilt
from the heavens above. Cramming
isn’t a reason to pass an
incomplete work. It is a second
chance given to help you complete
the work. It depends on
how much time is left for you
to cram though. The less you
have, the more the pressure.
So to satisfy yourself and your
prof, make the most of the time
you have. Do not push yourself
too much in squeezing your
creative juices because it will
only stress you out more. Instead,
learn to calm your mind
and let your inner peace take
place. That way, ideas will flow
more freely and will not clutter
to confuse you of which to use.
And from time to time, take a
break. Keep yourself happy and
pray while you’re at it. If you’re
already decided on cramming,
then be confident about it.

Sleep is for
Another reason why artist had bad sleeping habits is that th
pouring in. The good thing is that it’s not an excuse, it’s s
all-nighters, with the silent and peaceful ambiance of the nig
er you) it gives them vibe of having the freedom to express t
artists to develop and organize their ideas
And so, while you believe that working at night is the best idea since you are probably
under pressure for a strict deadline early the next day, here are
some tips to keep those wild imaginations,
and those eyelids from dropping
head-on to your desks.
Preparing for a sleepless night? One way to ready yourself is
to grab an afternoon nap beforehand. Don’t let the moon and
the stars take away your precious
energy saving method even if you
are ready to sacrifice one.Take
your sleep 6-7hours before
your so-called ‘bedtime’
in order to revitalize the
used energy you pumped
during the day. An hour and
a half nap is a good wayof jumpstarting
your system.
““Don’t let
the moon and
the stars take
away your precious
energy saving
method even
if you
are ready
to sacrifice
one.””
Drink lots of water.
A reason why you
go sleepy is that
you’re dehydrated.
To avoid that, especially
if you’re going
to drink coffee, have
a follow-up glass of
water because coffee
may keep those
eyeballs alert, but
eventually it will
wear out and it will
aggravate your dehydration;
causing
you to crash early.
70 HypeMgzne july 2014
the Weak
ey believe that nighttime is the best period where ideas come
cientifically proven. While they cram their brains out for an
ht, (and the loud snoring of your Dad, if that doesn’t bothheir
min[ds without control. And that is one good factor for
for the ultimate purpose of art, expression.
Lifestyle
“ Just make sure you do the work. WORK. Okay? Stay away
from Netflix and movies for the meantime and you can
grab an endless of those when you aced your project.”
And here comes the favorite face-slapping
drug of all-nighters: COFFEE.
Drinking something caffeinated is a
good wake-up call. Though it will take
effect on 15-30 minutes, its effect will
last for 3-4 hours. Just
drink it continuously because
stopping will take
you down heavily.
One good way is also to
have a friend staying all
night with you. Having conversations
while you do work
will help keep you awake and
also you can help each other
keep track of your progress.
Just make sure you do
the work. WORK. Okay? Stay
away from Netflix and movies
for the meantime and you
can grab an endless of those
when you aced your project.
If you’re not in favor of caffeine, drink very
cold water and sip on ice chips for the cold
will make you stay awake and alert. Still not
approving of cold drinks? Try boiling water. No
I’m just kidding.
“ Scientists found out that doing exercises
is a more effective way for
increasing energy and
reducing fatigue.”
If you don’t
want drinking
the cold water,
try having
a cold
shower. It
will help circulate
the
blood flow
and keep you
alert.
“Though
one must
always
remember
that
nothing
beats
preparation,
whatever
the case
may be.”
and doing some little
stretch exercises.
Scientists found out
that doing exercises
is a more effective
way for increasing
energy and reducing
fatigue.
Eat healthy snacks. Fresh fruits are a good example. AVOID
SUGAR. Sugar will keep you hype for a short period of time,
but will drastically drag you down when it wears off.
Keep the light bright. A bright working environment
will push any thoughts of sleeping away from your
mind. If having a dozen lamp shades surrounding
your work area makes you happy, then plug them
all!
Take a
break. When
you feel like
the letters
and figures
are starting
to look like
your ex, then
you might try
getting up
Staying awake all-night for a project may bring
the results of a hard work. Though one must always
remember that nothing beats preparation,
whatever the case may be. The secret to success
is hard work that is not proven overnight, but
from the steps you had
to take over a period
of time combined with
the experience that you
also need to encounter.
Never rush and just
do things appropriately
and promptly. Sleep
is for the weak? Well
screw it.
