The "How" of Heathen Nineveh's <strong>Repentance</strong><br />

If one picture is worth a thousand words,<br />

Nineveh's repentance vividly illustrates a national<br />

response to the call of God. A nation repented, not<br />

simply a scattered group of individuals. We find it<br />

easier to believe a "great fish" swallowed Jonah<br />

alive than to accept that a government and a nation<br />

can repent at the preaching of God's Word. "The<br />

people of Nineveh believed God, proclaimed a fast,<br />

and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least<br />

of them" (Jonah 3:5). There is no reason to doubt<br />

this sacred history.<br />

This repentance began with "the greatest," and<br />

extended downward from the usual order in history<br />

to "the least of them." "Word came to the king of<br />

Nineveh; and he arose from his throne and laid<br />

aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth and<br />

sat in ashes. And he caused it to be proclaimed and<br />

published throughout Nineveh by the decree of the<br />

king and his nobles" (Jonah 3:6,7).<br />

It is true that this call to repent did not originate<br />
