METRO ATLANTA: A
LEADER IN CLEAN TECH
Metro Atlanta’s clean economy, the
most diverse clean economy in the nation
according to The Brookings Institution,
is well positioned to be a major hub in
a variety of clean tech segments. Led
by the Metro Atlanta Chamber, a new
council formed in 2012 to grow metro
Atlanta’s clean tech economy, attract clean
tech jobs and promote best practices as
a sustainable community. The Clean Tech
Leadership Council brings together top
clean tech executives, public policy and
higher education leaders to advance metro
Atlanta’s clean economy.
From 2008 to 2011, the Metro Atlanta
Chamber and its partners have recruited
20 clean tech companies to metro Atlanta,
resulting in over 1,600 jobs. Home to
companies such as GE Energy’s Smart
Grid Center of Excellence, Suniva, Exide
Technologies and Comverge, metro Atlanta
is at the forefront of clean technologies.
WIND ENERGY INDUSTRY
COMES TO GEORGIA
For the first time in the Southeast, global
wind industry leaders converged in Atlanta
in June for the industry’s largest annual
event – WINDPOWER 2012 produced by
the American Wind Energy Association.
Drawing approximately 12,000 attendees
from 60 countries and 900 exhibitors, leaders
discussed topics including federal legislation,
transmission, state policy, and the
wind industry supply chain.
“With more than 90 wind-related manufacturing
facilities located in the Southeast –
20 of which are in Georgia – and the proximity
to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International
Airport, the world’s busiest airport, Atlanta
was a natural fit to host WINDPOWER,”
said Metro Atlanta Chamber’s vice president
of supply chain & advanced manufacturing
development, Bob Pertierra.
With Georgia’s strong transportation
network, including the Port of Savannah,
the state is attractive to manufacturers making
components for wind turbines. Georgia
companies include Hailo USA, which manufactures
ladders for wind towers and ZF
Wind Power, which manufactures wind
turbine gearboxes.
