Hundreds of people repair- ed early in the day to the cemeteries and decorated the last resting places of departed kindred and friends. Nuu-an- u cemetery wore a beautiful aspect, therefore, with plots, monuments Add mounds arrayed in freshly bright garlands, bouquets and planted flowers when the G. A. R. procession reached the place. Although all arrangements were not fulfilled, the parade in the afternoon was in favorable comparison with those of former years. The turn- out of the National Guard of Hawaii ws .most creditable, every company la the two battalions mustering a pre- sentable strength. Notwithstanding that Principal Dyke had cordially accepted the invi- tation to Kamohameha School for Boys io participate in the parade. neither the Katnohameha Cadets nor the school band appeared In the order of precession excepting as printed in the newspapers beforehand. Acting Govornor and staff and heads of Territorial departments in carriages. Oa arriving at tho cemetery gates the raUttary escort opened out lining either slide of the avenue, allowing the G. A. R. veterans and their guests of honor, headed by the band and the Irittg party, to pass through and pro- ceed to the burial plot of Geo. W. De Long Post The Stars and Stripes hung in- - a sttll atmosphere at halfmast from the flagstaff in tho middle of the plot A wreath on a headstone here and there, with the ornamental cannon garlanded in white Sowers and xnaile vines, comprised the decorations of the plot, the graves being left for ceremonial garnishing with flowers. To the right of the plot an area was set with chairs and a reading table, the latter covered with the Star Spangled Banner. Two rows of chairs in front of the plot were for the veterans, who numbered about twenty-fiv- e. Colonel Fitch. Rev. G. L. Pear- son and Miss Cartwright were seated in the front of the area mentioned. Behind them sat the Territorial off- icials, viz.: Henry E. Cooper. Secre- tary and Acting Governor, and Majors L. T. Kenake and A. G. Hawes. Jr., of the executive's personal staff in full uniform; Jas. H. Boyd, Superin- tendent of Public Works; W. H. Wright, Treasurer; E. P. Dole, Attor- ney General; E. S. Boyd, Commission- er of Lands. The remaining one or two score of chairs were mostly occu- pied by ladies. F. M Hatch was about the only representative of the elder line of Honolulu's citizenship seated among the guests of honor. The general public, with women and children predominating, was ranged around the plot in hollow square fashion. At tho rear, inside the plot, was lined up the firing party in spick and span dress parade uniform of khaki. Beyond, them the band was stationed. A patriotic overture by the band opened the exercises. The first part of the ritual was then rendered in clear tones by Post Commander W. L. Eaton, the responses being led by Adjutant John W. Francis and the invocation impressively spoken by R. J. Greene, P. C. Chaplain. An inter- lude of music by the band was followed by Miss Cartwright's reading of President Lincoln's Gettysburg speech Then came the oration by Colonel Fitch. In' the latter part o' the ritual Adjutant Francis solemnly called tho roll of the dead of Geo. W. De Long Post bringing up memories of some who. in the earlier days of the local organization, marched ro- bustly to the same spot and assisted in similar kindly remembrances of comrades who had preceded even them to the last bourne. The cere- mony was scarcely needed to bring back to fondest memory those who, one by one, have passed away since the change, from foot to carriage upon the solemn route has been a welcome, nay a necessary, shift for a majority of the surviving heroes of the Union's life and death struggle In the early sixties. Judge Lyle A. Dickey, Captain, led the part of the ritual given to the Sons of Veterans. Fred. Terrlll. officer of the Day, performed the kindly rite of strewing "flowers on the graves. He had to his hand a great variety of floral tributes sent to the Post by its families and friends. "Saluting the dead." with three vol- leys over the graves, was done in military precision by the men of the Sixth Artillery. Rev. G. L. Pearson pronounced the benediction. Miss Cartwright's elocution in the Gettysburg speech was very good. She thoroughly gauged the necessities of open-ai-r utterance, throwing her voice easily to the outer confines of tho listening concourse. There was no apparent straining to do this. Miss Cartwright's enunciation was without flaw and her expression without fault The Oration. Colonel Thomas Fitch's oration was a succession of flowing periods, consti- tuting diction of ornate style. It was an extempore effort the orator em- ploying but scanty notes. "I wish I might address these old soldiers who have honored me with their audience," he said at the outset, "in the literal as well as the broader definition of the word, as my comrades, for the right to wear a Grand Army badge is a franchise of nobility grander than that created by the accolade of a king." This badge was not gained by birth. or wealth or learning by brush, of artist or penof author by suppliance to kings. Only those who have faced the hail of bullets, and Invited wounds on the field of battle, for pure love of country are privileged to wear this insignia of honor and to claim com- radeship with, those, who fell in the same cause, and as comrades to dec- orate the sods "that cover their silent forms. Whether that certificate of distinction were worn nader a general's stars or decorated the breast of the poorest soldier, white or black, it everywhere entitled the wearer to bur gratitude and honor. Custom had decreed that this day. honored above all days In springtime, should be set apart for honoring the memory of the Nation's patriot dead. It was a day when we saoald forget ourpetty qorrek and or petty trou- bles, to remember "tjeoee who forty years ago followed the call of the bu gle and the beat of the drum. Who ? could forget in those days the eathu-- 1 siastic and almost unanimous response to the attack on Fort Sumter? The enemies of the Union had been pre- paring for months to make that assault on the flag. It found the nation utterly unprepared. Its navy was scat- tered in foreign ports, its army at distant posts and its arsenals were empty. Up to a few days before the event broke the government had made no preparations. But the assault on Sumter fired a battery that extended from the Atlan- tic to the Pacific and a continent re- sounded with the tramp of armed men. Party ties were severed. Republicans and Democrats became fused with patriotic fire. Out of the forests, out of the mines, from the farms and the shops, millionaire and pauper, men flocked under the starry banner. Eyes blazed with a new light faces were turned toward the southland. And they marched away, not to return until the banner of the Union should float In security from the Potomac to the GulL The history of that army was one of unexampled patriotism and self-sacrifici- devotion such as the world had never known. Colonel Fitch attnouted the glorious results achieved to the fact that it was a war having moral ideas behind it Every soldier was animated by patriotic motives. Ask the , legions of Rome why they invaded Africa and desolated Gaul, and they could only reply that it was the command of Caesar. Probably the Germans in the Franco-Prussia- n war could not tell why they atttacked Sedan. In the struggle to preserve the Union there was a heart under every uniform and a brain behind every bayonet The soldiers were inspired with the Idea of unity and the purpose of redeeming the Nation from the stigma of slavery. These were the impulses that moved the armies of the Union from Sumter to Appomattox The Federal soldier was imbued with the old Puritan doc- trines of freedom of speech, equality of man and freedom of the press. The Confederate Idea was a nation com- posed of parts and each part greater than the whole. Each Union soldier comprehended in a word that it was a contest between the seventeenth and the nineteenth centuries between growing civilization and waning bar- barism between the school and the slave corral. There had never been a. conflict with purer or more patriotic purposes. The Union soldier fought not for feudal ascendancy or for con- quest nor to decide whether a priest should be clothed in a coat or a sur- plice. He fought that liberty might not perish from the earth. That equality of any man with another man, when he could attain that degree by his own God-give- n capacities, should not be taken away. What pictures did not that conflict leave on the memory? A great naval officer lashed in the rigging, his white hairs streaming to the breeze, urging his ships Into a torrent of flame. A dashing general of cavalry leading his troops through fen and forest to re- trieve disaster upon a distant field. Another general disdaining most for- midable obstacles to cut a swath through the enemy's country from At- lanta to the sea. The silent general whose first order on entering Rich- mond was to extinguish the flames licking up the city, thus transforming the destroyers of property into the preservers of property. Lincoln, taking advantage of the right hour to abolish slavery. With such leaders was history made never to fade or fall while the earth goes round. The orator referred eloquently to the sustaining sympathy of those who were left in the fields and by the firesides, as well as in the counting rooms where trembling fingers wrote the checks that commerce gave to the country. The Grand Army of the Republic wrote its eternal title to hon- or from the country it saved. Colonel Fitch bid his aucitors look abroad today at the land these men's services and valor saved. He described in glow- ing tropes the great prosperity of the country, its expanding industry its advancement in science, art and liter- ature Its commerce multiplied by mighty heartbeats. The sapling from the old world oak had grown into a forest A handful oi people from over the sea had made a century blaze with the achievements of civilization. There were no slaves now to dishonor labor. Credit reigned at the head of National finances. It was the greatest freest most prosperous and most enlightened country on the face of the earth. If those men of the G. A. R, had preferred their ease when the crisis arrived, we might be living among the broken and dishonored fragments of a once glorious nation. This ground once two thousand miles from our western boundary Is now near the center of the territory under the pro- tection and shelter of the banner of stars. Ships lose and gain a day in going to and fro between the shores protected by the flag. Recent events have Introduced tinse people across the Pacific to our political privileges. Shall we use European methods in dealing with them or the American plan of education first and then assim- ilation? Shall we make this government a probate court to hold those people in perpetual guardanship, or shall we immediately teach them to sing the songs and hold aloft the emblem of American liberty? Give them the knowledge that they are heirs with us in our great heritage and invite them to share in its benefits and its privileges. "Were I a Hawaiian born, holding in my body the blood of kings. I would value higher the standing of an Am- erican citizen, and should say to that flag, with all my heart. Aloha nuL" In remembrance one could under- stand the meaning of the evangelist's words, "A thousand years are as one day." The speaker remeabered how (Caatinued oa Sights Page.) Plea for Banishing Green-eye- d Jeal- ousy Lazy Christian Cards the Inplements of Gamblers "Don't Let Dancing Interfere with Duty." William Edward Geil told a fair-size- d congregation gathered at Cen- tral Union church yesterday evening something about "dirt" as he has found it in Honolulu. In the remarks made by the tdlented young revivalist he maintained his attitude and in the course of the meeting launched forth several tell- ing truths In a manner peculiar to Mr. Geil. Mr. Geil referred to the "dirt" proposition in connection with his remarks along the line that the city should be thoroughly entrenched. He wanted to see large numbers of ditches thrown up, speaking from a figura- tive standpoint In the making of the ditches through the moral plane of the city, the refuse and dirt would be carried away. He cited several things which could be safely considered as dirt Irri- tability was one of them. "I like a religion that permits a man to en- gage in the putting up of a recreant stovepipe without the employment of swear words," remarked the speaker. "Let the stovepipe be used as the measuring rod of your Christianity." Jealousy; the green-eye- d kind, was also placed in the category of dirt "Why, bless you, there Is jealousy even among the churches themselves. The pastors are somewhat inclined to this sin at times. I can remember the time when, I was. pastor in a little church hack in the State of New York when a rival pastor-woul- d sometimes succeed in securing a larger string of converts than I did, and perhaps I did not say it out loud, but I confess I sometimes felt sure that these re- cruits would not hold out for their principles as long as those I brougnt into my fold. I think that by this time the Lord has taken all the jealousy out of my heart I now take eft my hat to the man who can achieve better results in the Lord's vineyard than I can. No, friends, the holy spirit and jealousy can not properly exist in the same person." Mr. Geil referred to "pride" as dirt which had better be thrown from the trenches. Under this caption the speaker paid brief respects to card playing and dancing. "I realize that I am treading upon dangerous ground in discussing these matters here." de- clared Mr. Geil. "I do not know how my remarks will be taken by the Christian people of this city. There may be nothing sinful in the little pasteboards covered with colored spots. Nevertheless spotted cards are employed by the gamblers in their games. Hence I for one cannot afford to indulge in a pastime in which devices used by the gamblers Is the main feature." "In the matter of dancing, all I wish to say is that when the mazy waltz takes the place of something better and more uplifting, I consider it wrongful. "I fear that my references have taken hold," smilingly remarked the speaker. "I see that some of you be gin to squirm and wriggle a little bit Well, throw out the cards and dis- pense with the dance when you jbegin to feel that those pastimes are de- tracting from your religious' enthu- siasm, and you will be on the safe side." Mr. Geil took up the subject of laziness, declaring that it came in for some attention among the "dirt" to be cast aside. "It is a fact the general run of church people are troubled with chro- nic laziness. Warm weather is made an excuse for laziness. If you people In Honolulu refrain from Telrgious activity because of the heat and will only become busy servants In the church during cold weather, there is to be a long vacation for Christianity in this town. If you are going Into the business of winning souls for the master, the work must be taken up with a vim. It must be carried out In connection with our social duties. over the counter, and at the work- shop." Included in the announcements for the remainder of the week, Mr. Geil called attention to his service for this afternoon, when he will relate ,his experiences at the funeral of the great German philanthropist, George Muller, Mr. Geil being the only stranger admitted to the solemn and impressive service. The revivalist will continue the se- ries of meetings through the week, the last being held Sunday evening at Central Union church. The taleated divine will speak io men. only Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock. Boys under twelve years of age will be debarred, from, the service. Throughout the day Mr. Gen will make four addresses In this city Sunday. He will address congrega- tions at the Christian church at II o'clock, Kawaiahao church at 11:20 o'clock. The afternoon meeting at I o'clock, and the evening service at Central Union church at 7:30 o'clock. AMUSEMENTS. "The Two Sisters" was repeated last night to a large house that thoroughly enjoyed the comedy and the many specialties. The latter are es- pecially clever, including the songs rc the babies and the whistling selec- tion. This piece will be played at tho children's matinee on Saturday afternoon and will furnish entertainment entirely to the taste of the little ones. "The Black Flag," to be presented to- night and tomorrow, is a melodrama of the strongest type. Originally pro- duced in England, it has become a --strong favorite with all stock reper toires. The story opens with the pronounced favoritism shown by a despotic father to his eldest son, who Is a thorough scoundrel at heart and re- pays his father's affection by robbing and severely wounding him. Suspicion is thrown upon the younger son, who in the first act is disowned and sent out into the world. The ne'er do well, still believed in by his swee- theart goes to the penitentiary in company with a London Jew named Lazarus, the comedian of the piece and, a constant source of merriment Through the planning of Ned, a waif, who has been befriended by tha supposed culprit, an escape $s ef- fected and the black flag, a signal of the breaking out of a convict is hoisted. The hero and Lazarus have many adventures and the brave little Ned receives the bullet fired by the warden and intended for his friend. Everything of course winds up hap- pily in a most amusing last act Spe- cialties are introduced and the play is bound to please. Ned. the heroic little vagabond, Is played by Jessie Norton, the part being a prominent one in the hands of a capable actress. Miss Norton should be well suited to the role. The rascally Jew, one of the fattest comedy roles in existence, will be taken by Mr. Elleford, who will bring many laughs. The situa- tions are strong, the bill being from a soundly dramatic standpoint unmis- takably the best yet presented by the company. "The Black Flag" will be well worth going to see. The foregoing will correct errors in the Orpheum advertisement, printed on another page before the correction came to hand. MOIL. FIELD DJY OF BOYS' BRIGADE PALAMA DIVISION CARRIES OFF HONORS FROM THE OTHER SUBURBS. Hon. S. M. Damon Gives the Boys the Freedom of Moanalua Sports are Hotly Contested Full List of Events and Winners. Palama wiped up the earth with Kalihi, Kakaako and Punchbowl yesterday" in the second annual Boys Brigade Field Day. About two hundred boys attended the games, the majority of whom took part in the events. Four large busses took the boys out to Moanalua, starting out about' 10 o'clock. Lunch was taken along and the boys ate their fill. After lunch the boys started out to amuse themselves. Samuel M. Da- mon's large grounds were placed at the disposal of the youngsters, so that the boys promptly took posses- sion and became monarchs of all they surveyed. While some took long rambles in the hills, others made for the seashore, where they proceeded to cool off by taking an occasional plunge. Still others followed some enthusiastic golfiacs who went swet-in-g and swearing over the landscape. The sports were, very exciting. Pa- lama had won the banner last year, with comparative ease, but the Ka- kaako boys came out with the Inten- tion of making the Palamaites feel that their name was mud. They were doomed to defeat however, for Pa- lama carried the day with 52 points, Kakaako coming next with 34, while Kalihi and Punchbowl tied for third place with 5t points apiece. The Desha family from Palama were particularly in evidence- - Ed. Desha won the pole vault Geo. Desha won the 50-yard dash and W. Desha took third In the 50-yard dash and second in 220-yar- d dash.- - En Det a little Chinese boy from Kakaako, showed remarkable grit for one so young in the high jump, making uso of every bit he had, and although not a winner, jumped in the best form of all the boys. The relay race proved an. easy thing for Palama. A watermelon was put up as the prize and this so invigorat- ed the Palama sprinters that they were in and had the melon half eaten before En SuL the speedy little run- ner from Kakaako. hove in sight The bicycle race furnished the best sport of the day. About six boys en- tered the first heat. The start was good, the boys keeping weB together until the stretch when. Hoopii (KK) took the lead with a jump. Espinda I (P) was equal to the occasion, for he was after Hoopii with a jump, passing" him about twenty yards from the finish. There was a little strag- gle between, them, out Esplnda bad too much speed and won oat by about half a length. The second he3t was not so exciting. Williams CPB) got a bad start and thought it was all up with him. but by sheer plugging: began to pick up again. Caesar (PB) had a small gear, which enabled him to spurt quickly. In one of these spurts G Desha tried to catch him but lost his pedal, which put an end to his aspira- tions. By this time Williams had his gear working and, when he turned in- to the stretch, swept along far ahead of his competitors, winning easily. Caesar came second. The final was the exciting race. As the men swept into the stretch. Wil- liams (PB) was seen to lead, Caesar (PB) coming second, with Hoopii (KK) a close third. Hoopii was not done for, as with a spurt he jumped to .the front and fought for the lead with Williams all the way down the stretch. An extra stretch landed him winner by half a length. PB Punchbowl AH OLD FAMILIAR FIGURE BIDS FAREWELL TO EARTH Captain John Rice, Once a Conspicu- ous Waterfront Personage, Diss After Long Illness. Captain John Rice Is dead. The end came to the aged mariner Wed- nesday evening at the Victoria hts-pita- i. His removal out of the land of the living would make a more no- ticeable blank- - had he gone more di- rectly from the place where for many years he was one of the most familiar figures. Until a few years ago Captain Rice had been in command of the government tug Ele'i from the time that vessel came here about six- teen years ago. Beinr of immense bulk he was a most conspicuous personage on the waterfront He was always as jolly as he was stout To well-behave- d youngsters he took a great shine, being always glad to have them out of school hours off to sea with him in the tug. Captain Rice was born here, but spent most of his life on board whal- ing vessels. His wife died a few years ago. He leaves four daughters and three sons Mrs. Charles Kib-lin- g, Mrs. Steele, Mrs. W. Bush, Mrs. Mitchell. John, George and James Rice. For some time after failing health made him give up the tugboat, the captain was given employment as a government watchman. He was probably seventy years of age or there- abouts. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon from the undertak ing rooms of Mrs. E. A. Williams. NEWS OF THE TOWN. Hunt of the Honolulu Fire Department Is very ill at the Queens hospital. He was taken down, very suddenly last week. The honored banner of Geo. De Long Post was not hung from the outer walls at headquarters yesterday as of yore. Owing to the removal of buildings and trees across the street since previous Memorial Day. there was nothing to which the other end of a cord could oe fastened. Commencing tomorrow morning. Iwakami &, Co., Hotel street, will hold a clearance sale for three weeks only. They will offer their present stock at a sacrifice. The pride of Uncle Sam's navy is here. Yesterday morning seen after sunrise the battleship Oregon from the Orient arrived and anchored off the harbor where sho will coal and then leave for San Francisco. The big warship made a very speedy run from Yokohama which port ha left on the lbth and although her commander wrote that he did not ex- pect to reach here before the 2nd or 3rd of June, ho arrived on the heete of his letter which was bronght by the Gaelic. The trip over was not as comfortable as It might have been, as the same weather which delayed the Gaelic was experienced by the warship. Lazette. Soon after it was known that the Oregon was here there was a wild rumor that Aguinaldo was aboard on his way to the states This was found on inquiry to be untruo however. The big vessel will begki coaling this morning and an effort will be made to get her ready for sea again by Monday. She Is on her way to the Coast to have repairs made to her made necessary by her going on a rock in China waters last year. While making hor anchorage yesterday a distressing accident happen- ed to boatswain Murphy who was su- perintending tho work of letting go the port anchor. After the anchor was let go the chain was running ottt and when the fifteen fathom shackle was reached It snapped and the end of the chain swinging around struck Murphy and dashed him up against the hoisting machinery In the fore- castle, it is thought that the man's skull was fractured. He was taken to the hospital and now lies at the point of death. The big 6000-poun- d anchor was lost overboard and as it is In twenty-fiv- e fathoms of water it will be a bard task to recover it The Oregon is one of the most not cd warships in the world. She bos distinguished herself as no other vessel of her kind has ever done, anl by her trip from San Francisco to Cuba during the Spanish war she covered ' her builders, and officers with gkiry by her performance. At the time she made tho voyage It was thought that a whole Spanish fleet was on the lookout for her and would trv their best to capture her. She reported at her journeys end, however, without having seen a sign of the Dons and was present at the capture of Car-vera- 's fleet at Santiago, her gaas do- ing a great deal to sink the Spanish vessels. When she went on the rocks oS the China coast last year she bad a nar- row escape from destruction. Before starting out on his trip from Yoko- hama her commander bad parcoased a wrecking outfit from one of the Jap- anese steamers and this was on board at the time.
