Who started Brazen?
Kevin Scharpf opened Brazen with a business partner in
February 2015. In the past year, he has had the opportunity
to take over sole ownership.
What motivated you to open Brazen?
I have always been a motivated individual and set life
goals. Being a chef and owning a restaurant were two
things I've wanted to succeed at since I was very young.
After seeing the Caradco building and the space that was
available it was an instant match!
What is your previous chef/restaurant experience?
I was a part of the opening culinary team for the new
Diamond Jo Casino and had been their Banquet/Sous
Chef for 6 years. It was at the casino where I took my
management to the next level and started learning the
things it would take to be able to own my own business.
Why did you choose to have your
business in the Millwork District?
Often times they say a space chooses you, you don't
choose the space, and this was very much what
happened. We are very happy and excited to be part of
the Millwork and have become a great family in the area
with local businesses. The style of restaurant I wanted to
do needed to be in a unique space and a space that was
exciting. The Millwork fit the bill for all of these!
What does Brazen offer that makes
it unique to the tri-state area?
I am excited to say that there are a lot of restaurants
doing great things in Dubuque. The thing I'm most
proud of that makes Brazen special is not having a
single freezer in the restaurant! This has been the key
to keeping our food fresh and help build as many
connections to local farmers as possible. Our food is
very scratch cooking and sometimes can be daunting.
We have a young, ambitious team from the front of
house to the back of house and they are all very eager
to offer the best experience they can.
What are your aspirations for
Brazen in the next 5 years?
The one major goal that gets brought up with the staff
often is receiving a James Beard Nomination. This is
the Oscar’s of the food world and for us to work hard
and strive for a nomination would be very fulfilling. To
achieve this, we believe we need to continue education
and keep pushing to better ourselves and the
ones around us. We hope that Brazen can keep being
a positive food movement for Dubuque and continue
to offer a product that’s different and hopefully exciting!

Who is the owner(s) of Inspire Café?
Sara Post is the principal majority owner/operator/manager
and Scott and Julia Thesien are the minority owners.
What was the motivation behind opening Inspire Café?
To be more than just a coffee house and to passionately
serve exceptional food and beverages while promoting
authentic connection, inspiration and community
engagement. As an anchor of community life, Inspire
Café is a catalyst for transformation, dedicated to making
a beautiful difference in our world.
What is the significance of the name?
Inspire Café significance is simple: if you inspire one
person, you inspire many. It can be as little as an inspiring
quote on your coffee sleeve to help you through the
day, or a powerful Inspire People speaker that changes
your life. I feel inspired everyday by watching customers
in the café smiling, laughing, first dates. Listening to local
artists and their passion for what they do. Raising money
and doing fundraisers for the community is inspiring!
Our community and the people here are truly amazing!
Why did you choose to have your
business in the Millwork District?
I am a Dubuque native. To watch the revitalization of this
area and what everyone has done is nothing short of
beautiful! I am so proud to be a part of something so
fresh and upcoming in my hometown. I’m excited to
continue to grow with the Millwork District along with
the other businesses here.
What does Inspire Café offer that
makes it unique to the tri-state
area?
We are unique by being more than a coffeehouse. We
have a large space to welcome many different types of
events such as, live local music on the weekends, Inspiring
People Series, speaker events, artist receptionspartnering
with Gallery C and participating in First Friday
events, English Afternoon Tea, community fundraising
events and supporting local charities. We also host for
private events such birthday parties, baby and bridal
showers, wedding rehearsal dinners, business parties,
plus much more!
Do you have any specials or events
that you would like to highlight?
The Inspiring People Series objective is to create and
celebrate inspiration. These monthly presentations are
offered as informal and intimate exchanges for the
open-hearted and curious. They're like sitting in a living
room and having a fantastic soul to soul conversation
that leaves you moved, touched and inspired! Each
presenter talks about what's made them the person that
they are and why they choose to share their gifts and
make a positive difference in the world. They share
personal stories about their struggles, insights, passions,
and breakthroughs that have made them the person that
they are. Each presenter speaks for 45-60 minutes and
then responds to audience questions and comments.
Inspiring People Series presentations are FREE and 100%
of all love offerings go directly to the presenter or a
charity of their choosing. We'd love you to join us! Every
second Thursday of the month from 7-8 p.m.
We also offer English Afternoon Tea where you can take
in the relaxed ambience and enjoy a three-tiered
arrangement of finger sandwiches, scones, and seasonal
desserts. Choose from a selection of exceptional teas
and perhaps enjoy a glass of champagne or mimosa.
Afternoon Tea is a celebratory affair to enjoy with
friends, associates and especially loved ones. “Little
Prince & Princess tea” also available for our junior guests
4 years to 12 years old. You can visit Inspire Café’s website
at www.inspire-cafe.com for more information on
this lovely ritual typically offered from 2-4 p.m. on the
last Sunday of each month. Call Inspire Café to reserve
your table - 563.583.8338.
What are your aspirations for
Inspire for the next 5 years?
To be heavily involved and support our community while
standing by our mission and our vision. To be that “third
place” and anchor of community life where people
connect with old friends and meet new ones. Inspire
Café is a home away from home for all of our guests.
Any further comments?
Many new menu items - organic when possible, vegan
and vegetarian options. Please check out our website
Ann Butzier opened Namasté in the fall of 2015.
How long have you been in business
We have officially been open for business for 16 month
What motivated you to open Namasté
I was looking for a change and new challenge. In thinki
about what I like and what I could envision for myself
and our community I decided to go into retail after
reading several articles about both the athleisure trend
as well as the need for retail in Dubuque.
Why did you choose to have your
business in the Millwork District?
I chose this space for several reasons. I’m so excited
about the work that is happening in the Millwork area
bringing life back to these beautiful, historic buildings.
I’ve visited other cities that have restored areas like th
and it’s such a positive move for our community in so
many ways. The area is beautiful and there is so much
new energy here, which is exactly what I was looking fo
in my life and for my business, and I wanted to be a pa
of the movement.

What does Namasté offer that makes
it unique to the tri-state area?
Athleisure clothing isn’t defined by a single look and
there are no boundaries. Not only is it extremely
comfortable, but everything is so versatile, designed to
be worn for just about everything; from a workout,
throughout the work-day, and even into the evening.
It’s suited for everyone, despite age, size or fitness
level. Even high fashion brands are jumping on board.
Our store offers a collection of nearly 20 brands, which
is unlike other department stores, so we have a huge
selection of styles, colors, sizes and prices. We also
strive to carry brands and items that are socially or
environmentally conscious, and we offer several items
that are locally made to help support other entrepreneurs
in our community.
Do you have any specials or discounts
that you would like to highlight?
We currently have a winter clearance sale going on as
spring shipments are beginning to arrive! We do offer
pop-up specials occasionally throughout the year as
well.
What are your aspirations for
Namasté in the next 5 years?
I would love to see growth allow for extended hours,
which would require additional staffing, etc. I love the
hustle and bustle of the holiday season, and it would be
great to see that fun and energy be extended throughout
the year. I hope to grow our online presence to open
our doors up to thousands of people, which is a pretty
exciting thought. I’ve had several out of town customers
ask if I’ve considered opening other stores in different
locations, which is always a fun possibility to think about.
Any further comments?
Until recent years, I don’t know if I fully understood how
shopping local and independent impacted our community
and our economy. For every $100 that is spent at a
local business, $68 of those dollars will stay in our community.
What a difference! I’m so grateful for the
support of our customers and the other downtown
business owners in Dubuque who are all helping
Dubuque be a great place to live, work, play, visit and
shop!

Who started Zazou’s Bridal & Tuxedo?
Jodi Stricker and Khi Shireman came together and
created what Zazou’s Bridal is today.
How long have you been in business?
We opened our business in the Millwork District in
May 2013.
What motivated you to open Zazou’s?
Jodi had been in many, many, MANY weddings.
Through all the different bridal shops and salons
that she visited, there was a tendency of unsatisfactory
service and lack of focus for the client in the
store.
Why did you choose to have your
business in the Millwork District?
As Dubuque locals, we wanted to be part of the
Millwork restoration process to keep the buildings
our parents, grandparents and even great-grandparents
were employed by. It was imperative to keep
our historical buildings intact and sustainable for our
family history to remain a forever landmark in
Dubuque.
We also host our Bridal Show in September 2017
outside in our Millwork Courtyard.
What are your aspirations for
Zazou’s in the next 5 years?
We will be taking our private Zazou’s Bridal Gown
collection to New York fashion week and they will be
available in boutiques across the US. We want to
write a book on what it takes to start a bridal company.
Also, create some video buzz with comedic
scenarios that we have experienced from our store.
Any further comments?
Family is forever and that is what marriage is about.
What does Zazou’s offer that makes
it unique to the tri-state area?
Zazou’s Bridal carries bridal gown vendor lines that
are exclusive to Zazou’s in Dubuque only. We have
also created a Zazou’s Bridal private gown line. We
have our 1st collection available in house now. We
have more in production and they’re on the way.
Zazou’s Bridal is also the only bridal store in the local
tri-state area that can assist a bride in creating their
one-of-a-kind wedding gown. Yes, she can come in
and design a gown that has never been seen before!
We also have our Zazou’s Cares mission to give back
to our community with mentoring and volunteer
work.
Do you have any specials or events
that you would like to highlight?
We will be having a bridal gown sale for all discounted
and select sample bridal gowns in March. We
participated in the Dyersville Commercial Club Park
100 Year Anniversary Bridal and Prom show February
12, 2017. We are also opening Zazou’s Prom Pop
Shop for prom wear soon in the Roshek building for
the month of February and March with a strong
possibility of doing a prom show while we are there.

What motivated you to open RF2?
Rebecca’s knowledge and design experience, as well
as the space leased in Schmidt Innovation Center.
We absolutely loved the heavy timber renovated
Quality priced at Warehouse pricing. Also, a river of
Success came as a surprise to Hurst, a
longtime Brewers fan and 2016 graduate
of University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
“I was actually really shocked,” she said.
“I didn’t think I was going to win it. It felt
really good.”
Shirts with Hurst’s design will only be
available to those at the ballpark for the
game against the San Diego Padres.
However, she will get 50 copies for
herself, along with four tickets to a game
and the chance to attend batting practice
on the field with players.
Hurst submitted her design after someone
passed along a link to the contest
website. Fans were asked to pick their
favorite from several dozen possibilities.

What advertising trends do
You See Having The Biggest Impact
for Small Business in 2017
1
Christine Bochniak
Director of Social Media & Brand Communication
Fourge Social
Looking ahead into 2017, I see LIVE video advertising
becoming more and more prevalent. We saw this in the
Snicker’s commercial during the Super Bowl on February
5th. Everything from commercials, concerts, the Presidential
inauguration has all been streamed live over the last
few months. I predict that people will soon be able to
purchase real-time ads for their business that will run
during Live social media streaming. Facebook was already
testing this in August of 2016. Businesses will be trying to
capture more of their audience using video
and when they know they can get a
large population.
At Gigantic Design Co., we’ve seen some major s
the way small businesses are using their advertis
dollars, and these trends will continue to evolve
One of the main trends is a new focus on perform
media. To get the most out of your marketing bu
choose types of digital advertising that will allow
track the performance of your ads. The ability to
see clear performance analytics of your ads will p
you with powerful insights on your marketing eff
ness.
The second trend that we see growing in 2017 is
of video in marketing. Video instantly engages th
showing emotion and a message that often is wa
impactful than static words. Some small business
think video is an expensive endeavor, but it does
to be. Next time you snap a photo to promote yo
ness, consider capturing a short video, too.
Another trend taking off in 2017 is the use of hyp
ed content. To capture a distracted customer’s a
you must reach them with personalized, relevant
Segmenting in this way means your content is ke
seen a movement away from expensive ad place
higher investments in branded content.

Digital advertising is the place to be for maximum impact in 2017. The rule of advertising has
always been to place ads in front of your target market. A Nielson report from 2016 found the
average American spends almost 11 hours per day in front of a screen (computer, tablet, phone,
television, etc.). Bottom line: if you’re not advertising on a digital platform, it’s going to be
difficult to reach your audience.
HERE ARE DIGITAL TRENDS THAT I FEEL SMALL BUSINESSES SHOULD EXPLORE IN 2017:
Targeted advertising. We can glean so much information about people’s interests from the
Internet. After searching for a product/service on Google you are haunted by that product/service
on every site you visit thereafter. This type of advertising requires paying more per person,
but the people seeing your ad are qualified leads looking to buy your offer.
Email. Smart advertisers aren’t going to settle for you just clicking on their ad. They’re going to
collect an email address so they can continue to send you information about the product/service
of interest as well as any information related to it that may be of interest. Small businesses find
email campaigns to be successful when they are delivering desired information that provides
value.
Video. Video continues to capture clicks in digital advertising and it doesn’t have to be expensive.
Still shots in an animated slide show can be just as effective when presented professionally.
Adding captions will help lure more clicks for mobile users who have silenced the sound.
The biggest challenge for small businesses wanting to jump into the digital game is just when
they figure it is safe to test the waters, the rules of the game change and they feel sidelined again
as they try to figure out the impact of the new rules. What worked yesterday may not work today.
Working with a marketing consultant or agency will help small businesses navigate the rapidly
changing scope of digital marketing.

I named my business, Challenge To Change, because I wanted
people to understand that the power to change and live a good
life is within us. It does not come from outside of ourselves.
Each choice we make leads us exactly where we need to be, and
knowing that can be very powerful. My business slogan is “Think
Positive and Positive Things Will Happen.” The power of positive
actions and reactions can make our lives so much better.
Challenge to Change, Inc. serves the Dubuque area with a drive
to continue to spread wellness. I say everyday: I love my job. I
love the variety it provides and the socialization I experience
everyday. I am inspired by messages from parents of my yoga
students when I hear they are applying their breathing techniques
to their everyday life. I am so blessed to be able to live the
life I am and be touched by the lives I am.
