As I write this piece I have received at short notice an
invitation to meet our new Prime Minister Theresa May,
in Edinburgh, following her initial meeting with the First
Minister. Bit peeved that the PM did not wish to meet me
fi rst! I admired David Cameron but have been impressed
with Mrs May’s Unionist credentials.
The Scottish Government has overturned the decision by
Inverclyde Council to refuse a wind farm above Greenock and
Port Glasgow in Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park. The location is
in the Parish of Kilmacolm and the 8,110 metre high turbines
will be visible for miles. There were 700 representations
against and ONE in favour. This is a shocking decision and
goes totally against local democracy. I keep hearing from Ms
Sturgeon about ‘the wish of the Scottish people‘ being respected, what about the
‘wish of the people of Inverclyde‘ being respected.
I attended the opening ceremony of the Fifth Session of the Scottish Parliament.
It was very professional and the Riding that followed in the Royal Mile brought
together representatives of many youth groups and organisations. Her Majesty
was the class act and her call to politicians to be calm and collected was most
apt.
The KPS summer service as always featured the P7 leavers. The youngsters put
on a fi ne show and showcased their many musical talents and we wish them
good fortune as they move to High school. The contribution by the Reverend
Fraser Donaldson was very relevant to all the pupils. Many members of the Angel
Voices choir live in the village and their Summer Concert entertained us all with
a most varied programme.
It was a pleasure to present the prizes at our assisted needs junior school,
Craigmarloch. This school is part of the Port Glasgow Community Campus and
is in my opinion the very best use of the public purse that is possible. The head
Eileen Stewart has retired and we should be grateful for her many years of service
to our less able but no less valued citizens.
Port Glasgow and St Stephens High School presentations of The Adams Family and
Bugsy Malone were quite outstanding. There were many superb performances
but Adam Docherty of Kilmacolm and PGHS stole the show, again.
The Armed Forces Day Service of Thanksgiving was held at Paisley Abbey.
Anne Hall the Provost of Renfrewshire, Guy Clark the Lord-Lieutenant and my
self as Depute Provost of Inverclyde all gave readings. There are many current
and past members of the Forces living in the village and it is important that we
acknowledge formally our gratitude to these men and women. On the 1st of
July I attended a 7.15am service to mark the Centenary Commemoration of the
opening offensives of the Battle of the Somme. Having visited the Somme battle
sites last year with the local Army Cadets I felt that the BBCs coverage of the Vigil
at St Pauls and the events at the Thiepval Memorial really captured the horror,
the courage and unnecessary loss of so many young lives.
It is very welcome news to learn that additional funding from
the Scottish Government has been granted to tackle further
fl ooding problems in Inverclyde. This additional funding will
allow for four more Inverclyde fl ooding schemes to go ahead of
which three are in ward 1 at Glenmosston Burn (Kilmacolm),
Gotter Water (Quarrier’s Village) and Bouverie Burn in Port
Glasgow. This work once complete will tackle the fl ooding that
has occurred for too long around these areas.
I was pleased to see at the recent Inverclyde Leisure Awards
that Birkmyre Gym and Port Glasgow Community Centre were
among the winners. It is great to see that two well used local
leisure facilities in ward 1 are performing so well.
Two head teachers - Alan Dick at Port Glasgow High School and Eileen Stewart
at Craigmarloch - both in ward 1 schools sadly retired at the end of June having
served Inverclyde so well over many years. We wish both Alan and Eileen all the
very best in retirement and for the future.
My next surgeries in August will be advertised in the local newspaper, on the
Inverclyde Council website and my surgery posters. Anyone wanting to contact me
between surgeries can do so by phoning me through my offi ce on 01475 712727,
my mobile 07747 765 839 or by emailing me at jim.macleod@inverclyde.gov.uk
or writing to me at Inverclyde Council, Municipal Buildings, Greenock, PA15 1LY.
