do human rights have to do with volunteering? This was the<br />
questi<strong>on</strong> posed and answered by Rev. Brian Fesler, the regi<strong>on</strong>al<br />
coordin<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>or <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Tennessee</str<strong>on</strong>g> United <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Human</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Rights</str<strong>on</strong>g>, during a<br />
special workshop <str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Tennessee</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>C<strong>on</strong>ference</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>Volunteerism</strong>.<br />
The workshop, titled <str<strong>on</strong>g>Human</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Rights</str<strong>on</strong>g> 101, was aimed <str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> volunteers,<br />
to help them first learn their basic human rights, then enlighten<br />
them <strong>on</strong> how to help others understand their rights, too.<br />
As the Volunteer St<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>e, the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Tennessee</str<strong>on</strong>g> government cre<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed<br />

The main event each year <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> Volunteer <str<strong>on</strong>g>Tennessee</str<strong>on</strong>g> is the <str<strong>on</strong>g>C<strong>on</strong>ference</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>Volunteerism</strong> and Service Learning, which<br />
aims to “increase service and volunteerism across <str<strong>on</strong>g>Tennessee</str<strong>on</strong>g> as a means of problem-solving throughout all stages<br />
of life.” The c<strong>on</strong>ference encourages participants to collabor<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>e to address needs in <str<strong>on</strong>g>Tennessee</str<strong>on</strong>g> while utilizing service<br />
and service-learning as a vehicle <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> educ<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong> and change.<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>Youth</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Human</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Rights</str<strong>on</strong>g> Intern<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong>al (YHRI) is a n<strong>on</strong>profit organiz<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong> founded in 2001 by Dr. Mary Shuttleworth, an<br />
educ<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>or born and raised in apartheid South Africa, where she witnessed firsthand the devast<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>ing effects of<br />
discrimin<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong> and the lack of basic human rights.<br />
The purpose of YHRI is to teach youth about human rights, specifically the United N<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong>s Universal Declar<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong> of<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>Human</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Rights</str<strong>on</strong>g>, and inspire them to become advoc<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>es <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> tolerance and peace. YHRI has now grown into a global<br />
movement, including hundreds of groups, clubs and chapters around the world. One such chapter is in <str<strong>on</strong>g>Tennessee</str<strong>on</strong>g>,<br />
working to educ<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>e people across the st<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>e <strong>on</strong> their basic rights.<br />
“Why do we teach people these basic human rights? Because every<strong>on</strong>e deserves to know,” says Rev. Fesler, “Only<br />
when you understand your rights can you defend your rights.”<br />
