ON THE ROAD TO PLUM
ISLAND – With growing
community support, particularly
among area government officials,
fans of the iconic Pink House are
sounding more confident that a
solution to the challenge the onetime
spite house presents may be
on the horizon.
Rochelle Joseph, a leader among
the Support the Pink
House citizens group,
encouraged members
of the group to have
cautious optimism.
Great strides have
been been made in
recent months, she
said, but more work
will be required to
develop a solution.
According to
legend, the threebedroom
home on
the Plum Island
Turnpike was built
in 1922 as part of a
contentious divorce.
The husband, ordered
by the court to build
for his ex-wife an exact
replica of the couple’s
Newburyport home,
had the 2,000-square-foot house
constructed on the edge of the
marsh with no utilities.
The house with its pink
shingles, vacant and alone against
the backdrop of the marsh and
sky, has attracted painters and
photographers for decades.
Joseph, who has spent the last 18
months fighting to keep the house
from being demolished, described
it as “part of the community” and
an “iconic landmark.”
Letters To The Editor
Mineral Street Wisdom: No Combined School at Winthrop
Community Announcements
We have lived in Ipswich for 50 years, with the last 38 years on
Mineral Street, across from the walking path to Winthrop School.
Although not official “Townies”, our adult children are. We see the
Community Connections
daily traffic congestion and parking violations; we know the history
of the school and the neighborhood. The proposal to combine the two
elementary schools into one building on the Winthrop grounds will
multiply the problems we witness every day.
Business Spotlight
Back in 2002, signs prohibiting parking during school drop off
and pick up were installed. School-related traffic along upper Mineral
Street had gotten so bad that emergency response vehicles could not get
Real Estate
For
Sale
down the street. Today, these signs are largely ignored • For and Sale the problem
persists. In addition, the street is a cut-through for everyday traffic
attempting to avoid either driving through the Lord’s Square traffic
or downtown. Even the Winthrop school buses use Mineral Street to
Sports • Sports • Sports
bypass traffic.
As we see it, this larger school is like pouring a gallon of liquid into
a pint size container. It defies science and common sense. The outward
flow creates a messy and unsafe situation for traffic from Central
Pets, Animals, Plus
Street and downtown through Lord’s Square and up High Street to the
Middle/High School. Side streets and our beautiful, historic High Street
will suffer the consequences of drivers looking for a detour around the
congestion.
Health & Fitness
It is no exaggeration. If this school project succeeds, we are concerned
about not being able to get out of our driveway in an emergency. We
are concerned about how long it could take an ambulance to make its
way to our door. We know what we’re talking about because we have
been looking out our window for 38 years.
representatives of the Merrimack
Valley Planning Commission,
the Greenbelt, Essex County’s
Land Trust, and local builder Bill
Barrett, who has surveyed the
house and pronounced it stable
and in good shape.
The options include, but were
not limited to, a land swap with
another federal organization, a
non-profit organization or an
individual land owner who might
trade property of equal value to
the Fish and Wildlife in exchange
for the Pink House. The property
would have to be acreage that the
Fish and Wildlife would have a
use for.
She told supporters at the
monthly Pink House meeting last
week at PITA Hall that the fish
and wildlife service is conducting
two studies on the property. One
is an appraisal to set a monetary
value for the property. The other
is an archeological study to
determine if there are historical or
Native American artifacts on the
property that could preclude any
disturbance of the land. Peterson
told Joseph he was fairly confident
it would not be an issue.
One option under consideration
is to subdivide the property,
separating the two acres of higher,
dry land the house sits on near
the highway from the seven plus
acres of wetland on the parcels
behind the house. Those seven
acres would be protected and are
of considerably lower monetary
value than the house and higher
ground near the highway.
The group is also exploring
various uses for the Pink House.
It could be a low-impact ecolab
for one or more university
research teams who are studying
the marsh. It could also be the site
of occasional outdoor painting
sessions or art auctions to raise
money for its maintenance.
The house could be a
combination of art and biology,
Hoover said. Or it could exist
much like a lighthouse, where
a caretaker might live there to
maintain the house.
“We have a lot of balls in the
air,” Dempsey said.
Ruled out is the option to
use the house as a museum or
community venue. Joseph said
those heavy impact uses would
require too many changes to the
structure of the house, including
making it handicap accessible,
solving parking issues and raising
money to pay the cost of liability
insurance.
While the options are being
considered, the group is
seeking ways to have the house
protected from the weather and
encroachment by the marsh. If it
is going to stay in the community,
it must be preserved as a stable
structure, capable of being
refurbished, Joseph said.
Barrett and Peterson plan to
walk through the home in early
March. The town of Newbury
Announced by Agatha Christie,
adapted by Leslie Darbon. A Murder Is
Announced, directed by Ann Jaroncyk
and produced by Lou Dispenza will
be performed at the Perley School on
51 North Street, Georgetown, MA on
7:30 p.m. except for the Feb. 26th show,
murder is to occur in Miss Blacklock’s
Victorian house. The victim is not one
of the house’s several occupants, but an
unexpected and unknown visitor. What
follows is a classic Christie puzzle of
mixed motives, concealed identities, a
second death, a determined Inspector
grimly following the twists and turns,
and Miss Marple on hand to provide the
final solution at some risk to herself in a
dramatic confrontation just before the
final curtain. Tickets are $14.00. Seniors
NEWBURY CHIPMAN MINE
Jim Cunningham, a descendant
of the first settlers of Newbury and
lifelong resident of Newbury, discusses
the Mining Boom. Starting as early
as 1697 many minerals have been
discovered through the area, including
Gold and Silver. During the 1870s
silver was discovered in a pasture along
Scotland Road. By 1873, land values
in the area had jumped skyward. One
newspaper article, published as far away
as Colorado, reported the discovery of
silver in Newbury, describing the crowds
of people drawn into town by the
promise of silver and filling the saloons
and dance halls in Newburyport. March
Health & Wellness
By J. Peter St. Clair, DMD
When we ask for a Kleenex or a
Ziploc we may not necessarily get
that brand, but we know we will
get a tissue or a sealable plastic
bag. It is always interesting to me
hearing the different things people
say in the dental office that seem
to be “standard” among the general
population.
For example, most people use the
term “Novocain”. Even dentists,
including myself, use this term
daily to describe the local anesthetic
used to anesthetize or “numb”
teeth before they are worked on.
Novocain, apparently still available
for purchase, has not been used in
dentistry for probably 100 years,
but we still use the term because
everyone seems to know what we
mean. We may say “Novocain” but
that is not what we are writing in
your medical record.
Another term that is commonly
used by patients and those in the
dental office is “cleaning”. This
term is a poor choice of words to
accurately describe the service that
a hygienist performs. The problem
with this word is that it downplays
the actual procedure. “I need to
cancel my cleaning appointment.
Oh, you don’t have anything for me
Brighter Smiles...
for 2 months? That’s okay, it’s just a
cleaning”, is commonly heard in the
dental office.
We say “cleaning” because it’s
easier than saying, “We’ll see
you Monday, Mary, for your
periodontal maintenance and exam
which includes a full periodontal
exam, scaling and polishing of all
surfaces of the teeth, full dental
exam, oral cancer screening and an
update from the doctor to review
this information with you.” If you
have, or should have your teeth
cleaned every 3-6 months, the word
“cleaning” to describe the service
being performed is very inaccurate.
The term “crown”, or “cap” as some
people use, usually make patients
cringe. “I need a crown? I thought
I just needed the filling replaced”,
is common to hear. Patients tend to
think that they are losing their tooth
if they need a crown. While this is
not the case, what if the dentist said
that you need an onlay? Have you
heard that term?
I read an article in the paper
recently entitled, “Are Crowns Made
in a Day Worth the No Wait?” This
article describes some of the uses
of CAD/CAM (computer-aideddesign
/ computer-aided milling)
technology to produce “crowns”
for teeth the same day in the dental
office. The technology is used in
about 10-15% of dental offices.
In the article mentioned above,
there was not one mention of the
term onlay. An onlay, or partial
crown, for lack of a better description,
is one of the major advantages of
IT’S JUST A WORD
CAD/CAM technology. It often
allows the dentist to perform more
minimally invasive dentistry for
specific teeth.
The primary focus of the article
was to point out that these CAD/
CAM crowns may not be the best
choice for patients or dentists if
used on front teeth. The argument
is that a dental ceramist in a dental
laboratory can make “prettier”
teeth than a dentist can in a dental
office. While this may be true for
some circumstances, the column
downplayed some of the major
advantages I see with the use of this
technology. We say “crown” but it
really means, “an indirect, bonded,
protective restoration.” A “crown”
may cover the whole tooth or just
part of the tooth.
The materials we use and the
services we perform in the dental
office are constantly changing. Let
the dentist and dental hygienists
use their knowledge, skills and
technology to do great things to care
for your dental health. Don’t get
hung-up on words. Ask questions!
Keep an open mind and become
an active participant in your dental
health.
