Earlier that week, his classmate Lexi Anderson, a beautiful young woman with a pre-existing heart condition, had been found unresponsive and without a pulse in her Chino Hills home. She was revived, but she is in desperate need of an immediate heart transplant, and therefore, in dire need of fundraising. Melo knew before the game even began that he would be playing for Lexi. Good luck.’” High school sophomore LaMelo had created a stir in December of this school year, even catching Stephen Curry’s interest, when he pointed at half court and made a half-court shot. But this game, in honor of Lexi, showed him to be a champion in the truest sense – a champion of the heart. He scored 37 of his 61 shots, and 11 out of 14 free throws. Up until the very last minutes, even while three defenders guarded him so as to stop him from exceeding 90 points, he successfully landed a three-point shot that had the crowd standing on its feet.
