The conference aims at: (a) strengthening <strong>and</strong> exp<strong>and</strong>ing the<br />
human network of all involved in applied infectious disease<br />
epidemiology (b) sharing scientific knowledge <strong>and</strong> experience<br />
in this field in Europe <strong>and</strong> internationally, <strong>and</strong> (c) providing a<br />
dedicated plat<strong>for</strong>m <strong>for</strong> EPIET, FETP (field epidemiology training<br />
programme) <strong>and</strong> EUPHEM (<strong>European</strong> Public Health Microbiology<br />
Training Programme) fellows to present their work.<br />
AuDience<br />
The target audience <strong>for</strong> the conference includes epidemiologists,<br />
microbiologists, clinicians, veterinarians <strong>and</strong> public <strong>and</strong><br />
environmental health experts with a professional <strong>and</strong> scientific<br />
interest in infectious disease epidemiology, microbiology <strong>and</strong><br />
associated disciplines, <strong>and</strong> there application in the control of<br />
infectious disease. The conference aims at bringing together<br />
several groups of people involved in these areas including<br />
representatives from EU/EEA National Public Health Institutes,<br />
members of Dedicated Surveillance Networks (DSNs) <strong>and</strong> EPIET/<br />
FETP/EUPHEM fellows <strong>and</strong> alumni. The audience also includes<br />
governmental, NGO <strong>and</strong> academic researchers from across Europe<br />
<strong>and</strong> the globe with an interest in infectious disease prevention<br />
<strong>and</strong> control.<br />
topicS<br />
the 2011 programme is currently being developed, <strong>and</strong> includes<br />
planned keynote sessions on the following topics:<br />
• Enhancing health <strong>and</strong> health equality through vaccination<br />
programmes.<br />
• The Hospital as an infectious disease amplifier<br />
• Parasitic infections of increasing relevance <strong>for</strong> Europe<br />
• Infectious disease control in complex emergency situations<br />
In addition, a wide range of other topics related to applied infectious<br />
disease epidemiology <strong>and</strong> microbiology will be covered<br />
through the presentation of accepted abstracts. Accepted<br />
abstracts will be presented as posters <strong>and</strong> in dedicated oral<br />
sessions covering disease specific topics such as influenza, TB<br />
<strong>and</strong> HIV, <strong>and</strong> more general topics related to disease identification<br />
<strong>and</strong> intervention including disease outbreak investigation<br />
methodology <strong>and</strong> outcomes, surveillance, antimicrobial resistance,<br />
vaccine preventable diseases <strong>and</strong> methods <strong>for</strong> microbial<br />
identification.<br />
eScAiDe AnD epiet/euphem<br />
ESCAIDE will offer EPIET <strong>and</strong> EUPHEM fellows the opportunity<br />
to share their experience of the fellowship, <strong>and</strong> slots will be<br />
reserved <strong>for</strong> fellows to present their work.<br />
cAll <strong>for</strong> AbStrActS<br />
Abstracts are welcomed in the area of applied public health<br />
research, outbreak investigations <strong>and</strong> evaluation of public<br />
health surveillance. We also welcome other areas in applied<br />
epidemiology or public health practice in which results are<br />
linked to public health action.<br />
The call <strong>for</strong> abstracts will open 1 st June.<br />
Deadline <strong>for</strong> submission of abstracts to the 2011 eScAIDe<br />
conference is 8 th July.<br />
