Barefoot Vegan Magazine March_April 2017 issue

This issue of Barefoot Vegan Magazine is themed around community. We speak to vegan social justice activist, Brenda Sanders about what motivates her work, her best advice on running effective community outreach programmes and how to avoid burnout. We also feature interviews with London Afro Vegan's Esme, co-founder of Food Not Bombs, Keith McHenry, and we talk about community crowdfunding with One Planet Pizza's Mike Hill. Plus as usual, we've got lots of beautiful and inspiring content from our contributors and a huge selection of delicious vegan recipes.

have the kind support and advice of two doctors; Dr.
Sanjana Jio and Dr. Dev Priya Singhvi, who just both
happen to be vegans and are helping us with our local
authority proposal. We still have more data to collect and
will be running controlled sessions, the gold standard for
efficacy in the medical world.
How do the Food For Life classes engage
and empower your community?
Dr. Barnard summarises this perfectly: “It is a way to get
practical tools into people’s hands, information that they
can use and an understanding of how you can put it to
work. For doctors, nurses, advocates and teachers who
want to see this movement go forward, the Food for life
people are your best right arm.”
What are your plans for 2017?
Now a team of two (myself and Ceres Bizarro) 2017 has
started with a bang. In January alone we delivered healthy
cooking demonstrations and lunch for staff at
Wandsworth and Richmond Councils in partnership with
Healthy Eating Solutions Ltd, and at Royal Free Hospital,
Barnet General Hospital, Chase Farm Hospital and the
Royal Free Trust administrative staff in Enfield in
partnership with For All Our Wellbeing. We hope to
continue building on these professional relationships.
Feedback so far has been great. And being able to openly
use the word vegan has been heart-warming. This kind of
work helps us fund our long term mission. We plan to
work with more workplaces as they are an ideal and
convenient setting for spreading the healthy eating
message as most of us spend more and more time at work
than at home. On the 1 st of March we will be launching a
free monthly diabetes support group open to the public in
Camden, London. And I’m in the middle of securing a
venue for a monthly Cancer support group. All this whilst
we work in the background on obtaining our own
permanent venue through business development support.
If people want to support or get involved in
what you’re doing, what should they do?
We are currently fundraising the cost of our monthly
diabetes and cancer support groups. Last year we did a
lot of what we did using our free time and I self funded a
lot of our associated costs. This year we are looking for
support from the public to help us further our mission.
Please visit our website: www.lifeafterhummus.com
where you will find further details. And we thank you in
advance from the bottom of our hearts. We are
passionate about what we do.
Anything else you’d like to share?
Help us bring the healthy vegan message to your
workplace, your community, and schools by putting us
in contact with your wellbeing occupational health team
member and we can even work with them on finding
funding if none is available through our partners. Thank
you for featuring us and to everybody who has gotten us
this far. Nothing beats hearing how we have helped
people reverse their diabetes, reduce their insulin,
eliminate medication they were told they were going to
be on for life, or hear that they have been discharged
from what they were told would be progressive kidney
disease. This keeps me going. BV
