JCC announces 2017 Annual Meeting and award recipients
It will soon be that time again when the Sam
Pomeranz Jewish Community Center of Syracuse
throws its own unique celebration of selfless
giving and community. The JCC of Syracuse’s
154th Annual Meeting and Gala will be held
on Sunday, June 4
from 11 am to 2 pm
at Owera Vineyards
in Cazenovia.
Five awards will
be presented in
recognition of
outstanding service
given to the JCC
and to the local
community. This
year’s gala theme will
be “flavors of the
Mediterranean.”
This is the JCC’s biggest and most important
annual fundraiser. The distinctive celebration
brings together many members of the Central
New York Jewish community to benefit the JCC
of Syracuse and to pay tribute to those who have
acted so selflessly. A cocktail hour will get the
event started and segue to a delightful brunch. A
brief business meeting will follow, which will then
lead to the community service awards ceremony.
Again this year, as in the past, the gala’s proceeds
will provide significant funding for scholarships
to individuals in the JCC’s early childhood, after
school, summer camp and senior programs, as
well as funding for increased security needs.
Come to the JCC’s annual Purim Carnival for a ton of family fun!
A fun-filled day of games, activities, food and
more will once again highlight this year’s Sam
Pomeranz Jewish Community
Center Purim Carnival. The
annual family-oriented event
will be held on Sunday, March
12 from noon to 4 p.m. at the
JCC on 5655 Thompson Rd.,
DeWitt. There will be plenty
of interactive and entertaining
activities for preschool and
school-age children and their families. Admission
is free and open to the public.
The JCC’s 2017
honorees represent
a wide range of
dedication and
support. The Kovod
Award, which
signifies honor and
importance, will be
presented to JCC
board member Amy
Sumida for her hard
work and commitment
as the gala chairperson
for the past two years.
The JCC’s highest honor, the The Kovod
Gadol Award, which in Hebrew translates to
great honor, will be presented to the husband and
wife team of Howard and Ellen Weinstein. Both
have been longtime and active supporters of the
community. Howard is a JCC board member and
vice president, and Ellen is a former JCC board
member.
“It’s a wonderful thing to open our doors to
the community for an afternoon that’s all about
families having fun,” said Marci
Erlebacher, JCC of Syracuse
executive director. “Purim
is one of the most lively, joyfilled
holidays, and what better
way to celebrate than with a
carnival for our members and
neighbors.”
Open letter to the community from the JCC executive director
February 23, 2017
By Marci Erlebacher
It was almost 25 years ago that I attended one of my
first national conventions for Jewish Community
Centers. At the opening banquet, our Syracuse
group was seated with a like size community from
the deep South. This was done so we could talk
about our communities and our JCCs and learn
how others did business. It was at this banquet that
I learned one of my most invaluable lessons. As the
small talk of the evening evolved, I asked the leader
of a southern community how many Jews lived in
their community. Nine thousand
they explained. “So, how many Jews
belong to your JCC, I continued.”
“Nine thousand!” they incredulously
proclaimed as if there must be
something wrong with me.
At that time, we had about
nine thousand Jews in Syracuse;
but we only had about 330 “units
of membership” at our JCC. And
here was the invaluable lesson. In the South, where
being Jewish was challenging, you belonged and
supported your Jewish institutions as a matter of
survival. If you wanted to be Jewish and raise Jewish
children then, for the community’s survival, you
belonged and supported the Jewish entities so your
community could thrive. You supported community
so your children could come home once they
received their education to raise their families and
on and on so your community would survive.
On January 9th, 17 JCCs received bomb threats;
but they were elsewhere in the country, mostly in
the south; but, still, I shuddered. And then they
came for us. On January 18th, we received our first
bomb threat. We were one of 30. We evacuated
successfully, but knew we should do better in case
it happened again. On January 31st we received
our second bomb threat. This time, we were one
of 15, and we evacuated virtually flawlessly—with
slight tweaks needed. My personal motto is to
always strive to be better—even when you are
pretty damn good. Law enforcement praised our
preparedness; and, as a campus, our ability to
work together and coordinate our evacuation was
incredible considering the situation. Funny, but it
is not the actual bomb threat that is traumatic; it
is the days after—the debriefing with staff and law
enforcement, making sure staff is ok. The hardest
thing is reassuring the parents that all is ok—
constantly thinking and at times saying, “Please stay
with us. We are a safe facility. Keep your children
here. We can—and will—protect them. We are a
strong and vibrant facility stay with us. Please stay.”
The hardest thing I have had to do as executive
director is lead an evacuation and deal with
the aftermath. A new normal and continued
preparedness is now in the air of the JCC. When I
dress for work in the morning I check the weather
report, wear boots in case we receive a threat,
and ask myself if I dressed warm enough to stand
outside at my facility while my staff and our
children are taken to safety.
The letters of support we are receiving from
literally all across the country are heartwarming and
indicative of why we must continue in the face of
these events.
So, now I come back to my opening: our survival
must be linked to strong community support. We no
longer can boast of having 9,000 Jews in Syracuse.
We may be around 7,000—but how many of you
can say that you belong and/or support the JCC?
We need you now more than ever. We need your
support as a confirmation of why we must stand
strong. We came into being around the time that
the first battles of the Civil War were fought. We
have existed and survived through several wars
that were waged in different parts of the world and
we survived and grew. We have bragging rights of
being the second oldest JCC in North America. And
we are now faced with rising anti-Semitism, with
an evil element that goes after our very core—our
love of education, our love of family, our love of
community. Now, more than ever, we must stand
together strong and proud of who and what we are.
Please, stand with me. Let’s protect our right to exist
as a Jewish community now and forever.
Marci Erlebacher is the executive director of the
Sam Pomeranz Jewish Community Center of
Syracuse, a position she has held for 15 years.
She has been involved in the JCC for 31 years.
Annual Meeting
• Continued from page 1
Two Hall of Fame Awards will
be presented this year for advancing
outstanding generosity throughout the
community. Philip Holstein, who passed
away last fall, was an incredibly selfless
individual who always put everyone
else first. A former Jewish Federation of
Central New York President, he was a true
philanthropist, community and business
leader, and outdoorsman. Holstein had
an incredible gift for being able to bring
together diverse parts of the community
and to approach sensitive issues with
kindness and fairness. This year’s second
Hall of Fame Award will be given to
philanthropists Robert and Diane Miron.
Both are longtime community supporters
and Robert is a past JCC of Syracuse
President. The Mirons are longtime
supporters of the local Jewish community.
This year’s Leslie Award, the second to
be given since being introduced last year,
will be presented to attorney Todd Pinsky,
a partner with the local law firm Pinsky
& Skandalis. Pinsky, a young up-andcoming
professional, is a board member
with the Jewish Federation of CNY and
an active member of the Transportation
Lawyers Association. He has generously
given his time to benefit the JCC and
other local community organizations.
“The Leslie” recognizes outstanding
commitment and service to the JCC and to
the local community—the qualities which
the award’s namesake, Leslie London
Neulander, personified throughout her
many selfless volunteer pursuits.
“I am thrilled that we’ll be recognizing
another outstanding lineup of honorees
this year,” said Marci Erlebacher, JCC
of Syracuse executive director. “All have
exhibited such dedicated service to the
JCC and to the local Jewish community
through their selfless acts and generosity.
This year’s gala is shaping up to be another
heartfelt event.”
The JCC’s 2017 Annual Meeting and
Gala committee members are Lynne
Pascale, chair, Marci Erlebacher, Steven
Sisskind, Shira Boschan, Linda Drimer,
Adam DuChene, Debbie Goldwein, Paula
held each year. It has become a tradition
for the JCC to hold the celebration as a
way of giving back to the community so
that families can come together for an
afternoon of good quality time. Children
are encouraged to dress in costumes, which
is a Purim holiday custom. Kids dressed in
costumes will receive a prize ticket at the
door. A food drive to benefit the Temple
Concord food pantry will also be held.
Anyone bringing in non-perishable food
items will receive a prize ticket for each
item donated.
One of the carnival’s main attractions is
Esther’s Café, which will open for lunch at
11:30 a.m. in the JCC’s Anne and Hy Miller
Family Auditorium. A variety of home
style, Va’ad-supervised gourmet kosher
food by the JCC’s chef, Donna Carullo,
will be available. Menu items will include
corned beef and turkey
sandwiches, hamburgers,
hotdogs, knishes and
deserts featuring the ever
popular hamantashen.
The JCC Neulander
Family Sports & Fitness
Center’s Schayes Family
Gymnasium will be
transformed into a
mini-indoor midway
of sorts and feature kids carnival games,
large inflatable bounce toys and slides,
caricature drawings and more. Other event
attractions will include entertainment,
50/50 raffle, a toddler/preschool bounce
house, child safe ID fingerprinting and
car seat safety checks, PJ
Library activities, a used
book sale and release of
guide.
The JCC of Syracuse
takes pride in putting on
its Purim Carnival each
year thanks to the support
of a small “army” of
volunteers. Some of the many crucial tasks
volunteers will perform include running
games, serving food and helping out in
the prize room. For students seeking to
fulfill community service requirements,
volunteering is a great way to earn credit
hours, help out the JCC and have some
fun! Volunteer shifts are available from
11:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 1:45 p.m. to
4 p.m.
For more information about the JCC’s
Purim Carnival, including volunteer
opportunities and donating gently used
books for the sale, contact the JCC at
2017 summer camp registration begins March 12
Whose ready for
summer? Come to the
JCC’s Purim Carnival
on Sunday, March
12 from noon to 4 p.m. and sign
up your child for summer camp!
That’s when the JCC’s 2017 Camp
Rishon summer camp guide will
first be available and we’ll be
accepting camp registrations all
day long.
The JCC’s summer day camp
for children and teens will run
weekdays for eight weeks from
June 26 through August 18. Camp
Rishon will once again offer a variety of
adventurous and enriching programs so
campers can establish lasting friendships,
gain experience “by doing” and have loads
of fun all summer long. Last year, the
JCC had one of its most successful Camp
Rishon summer day camps. Hundreds of
campers ranging in age from infants to
school-age children to teens attended a
total of 2,500 camper weeks during the
eight weeks of camp
Camp enrollment is broken out into
three different age groups. The early
childhood camp is for children 6-weeks old
through entering kindergarten, school-age
camp is open to children entering grades
1–6 and the SyraCruisin’ teen travel camp
is for young teens entering grades 7–10. All
Fire drills
Licensing of our After School Program and
Early Childhood Development Program
with the New York State Office of Children
of Syracuse conduct monthly fire drills at
various times of the day to accommodate
varying child schedules. The monthly
scheduling of these drills is determined in
September and submitted for approval.
This means that regardless of weather
conditions, all fire drills are conducted as
required. Each and every person in the
building must evacuate during a drill. We
thank you in advance for your cooperation
in helping to make the JCC a safer place
for everyone.
ongoing fundraisers which help support
our programming.
Bottle and Can Drive
Thank you to all who have donated their
five-cent deposit bottles and cans in
support of our program! To donate to our
bottle and can drive, simply drop off your
returnable beverage containers directly to
F-M Returnables at 202 West Seneca St.
Upcoming
driver safety classes
Want to brush up on your driving skills and
save some money on your auto insurance?
We’ve got a few opportunities to do so in
the coming months. The JCC of Syracuse
of all ages
This highly interactive course focuses
on practical defensive driving knowledge
and techniques to help participants avoid
collisions and traffic violations. The
program offers participants a 10 percent
discount on the liability portion of their
auto insurance for three years and a
reduction of points for recent traffic
infractions.
• AARP Driver Safety Course
June 13 & 14 | 9 am – noon
(must attend both days)
$25 per person, $20 AARP members
Open to licensed drivers age 50+
This course teaches current rules of
the road, defensive driving techniques
and how to operate your vehicle more
safely in today’s increasingly challenging
driving environment. Attendees will also
learn how to manage and accommodate
common age-related changes in vision,
hearing and reaction time. Upon
completing the course participants
may be eligible to receive an insurance
discount; please consult your insurance
agent for details. AARP membership
is not required to take the course and
there are no tests to pass.
must bring their drivers license.
these classes, call 315-445-2360 or stop by
the JCC of Syracuse front desk.
Do you or someone you know need help
locating or applying for Social Security
benefits, SNAP (food stamps), Home
Energy Assistance Program
(HEAP), transportation or other
services? The Sam Pomeranz
Neighborhood Advisor can
help. This program is part of the
Onondaga County Department
of Adult & Long Term Care
Services and offers outreach,
information and referral services
to seniors in the DeWitt, Fayetteville and
Manlius areas.
seniors age 60 and older by providing
If you’ve ever wanted to make our world a
little greener—whether right here in New
York or in a desert region such as Israel—
the JCC of Syracuse can help. And, you
don’t have to get your hands dirty to make
it happen!
The JCC of Syracuse is continuing its
fundraiser to have trees planted in Israel
and at various other locations around the
world, including here
in the United States. To
support this initiative,
simply purchase a “Plant a
Tree” card from the JCC.
Then go online according
to the card’s instructions
to have your tree planted
at one of more than 35 reforestation sites
around the world. Each card costs $18 or
you can buy five and get one free.
“Plant a Tree” cards may be purchased
over the phone or in person from the
JCC’s main entrance receptionist, Jerome
and Phyllis Charney Early Childhood
Development Program or Neulander
Family Sports & Fitness Center. Donors
may choose to have their tree donation
Sharon Kieffer, the
JCC’s Neighborhood
Advisor.
obtain necessary services so that seniors
can remain living independently in
their homes. There is no cost to consult
with a Neighborhood Advisor,
however donations are accepted
and appreciated. Kieffer
is generally available most
weekday mornings for phone
consultations and meetings at
the JCC, at seniors’ homes or
in public places such as local
libraries. Kieffer has many years
of experience providing case
management services in the healthcare and
long-term care fields.
For more information about the JCC’s
Neighborhood Advisor, and to make a
referral (seniors may self-refer), call Sharon
Kieffer at 315-445-2040, ext. 156.
Plant a tree in Israel—without getting your hands dirty!
benefit the JCC’s After School Program,
Early Childhood Development Program,
Sports & Fitness Center, PJ Library in CNY
or Seniors Department. Tree donations
also may be designated as a tribute in
honor or memory of someone special.
“We’re really pleased to be rolling
out this type of fundraiser,” said JCC
of Syracuse Executive Director Marci
Erlebacher. It’s a first for
us and a great way for
our supporters to help
out their chosen JCC
program while making
a positive impact on the
environment.”
As a dry desert
region, Israel has limited trees and no
natural forests. Thus all forests must be
hand-planted, which Israel has done quite
successfully. In less than 60 years Israel has
become one of only two countries with a
net gain in its number of trees.
Posted win 2017 JCC Battle of the Bands
Nine bands rocked the Sam Pomeranz
Jewish Community Center for four-anda-half
hours Saturday night, January 14.
This 15th annual high school Battle of the
Bands concert drew a crowd of over 300 to
the JCC Neulander Family Sports & Fitness
Center’s Schayes Family Gymnasium
where the many up-and-coming musicians
played a wide range of musical styles. The
fans grooved and ate it all up. In the end,
returning classic rock band Posted from
Marcellus Sr. High School rose to the top
and was crowned this year’s winner.
Along with bragging rights, Posted
received a $200 cash prize, eight hours
of studio time at More Sound Recording
Studio in Syracuse, an interview segment
on 95X radio’s Locals Only show, an
opening act slot for an upcoming show at
The Lost Horizon and the headline slot
at this summer’s Contact Community
Services’ TeenFest event.
“This has truly been a milestone
Battle of the Bands concert,” said Mick
Hagan, JCC’s director of children and teen
services. “For 15 years we’ve been bringing
local high school musicians together to
showcase their talents and make them rock
stars for an evening.
It’s so awesome that
we’ve been able to
grow this thing into
Central New York’s
biggest battle of the
bands competition
exclusively for high
school musicians.
I’m so impressed
by the bands that
played this year and
how successful our
Battle of the Bands
event has become.”
The hard
rocking Posted is
no stranger to the
Battle of the Bands. They were tied for
third in last year’s show. This year the fivemember
group came out swinging with a
boat load of confidence and enthusiasm. It
was like they had something to prove. And
they did indeed prove that they were up
to the task. Playing a high-energy set that
included both originals and some cover
The JCC’s Mick Hagan (far left), director of children
and teen services, is pictured with 2017 Battle of the
songs, Posted
delighted their
large and vocal
fan contingent.
In fact, they
brought out
more fans than
any other band.
“We’d
like to thank
the JCC for
putting on
this awesome
event,” said
Posted’s lead
singer Nate
Murphy. “It’s
so great how
they pull all of
this together and give high school bands a
chance to play out. It was so incredible to
be here with so many good bands.”
The other members of Posted are
Dan Wrona, lead guitar; Josh Winoski,
percussion; Riley Burns, bass guitar; and
Sam Hayduke, percussion. They’ve been
playing together for about four years.
They describe their musical style as classic
rock influenced
by jazz, fusion,
progressive rock
and funk. Some
of the bands that
have influenced
them include Rush,
Phish, Steeley Dan
and Led Zeppelin.
“We think that
this is such a cool
event and we were
Rock band Posted from Marcellus High School won the JCC’s Battle of the Bands
competition on Saturday, Jan. 14. The concert, held at the JCC, featured nine high
school bands from across Central New York. Pictured, from left, are Posted members
Josh Winoski, percussion; Dan Wrona, lead guitar; Nate Murphy, lead vocals; and Riley
Burns, bass guitar. Not pictured is Sam Hayduke, percussion.
so glad to be a part
of it twice,” said
Posted guitarist
Dan Wrona. “A
great event to get
people out to see
and support local live music, and for us to
meet more people like ourselves.”
The other bands that battled it out with
Posted this year were White Moorman
from Fayetteville-Manlius High School;
XLATERALS from East Syracuse Minoa
Central High School; Summer School
(Baldwinsville); Decent from Lafayette
Junior-Senior High School; Final Velocity
from Baldwinsville; and The Mutants from
F-M, Jamesville-DeWitt High School and
