DAY & BOARDING SCHOOL FOR GIRLS & BOYS AGED 2-13 Give it a go! At Little Vines Nursery children learn by experiencing things for themselves and letting their imagination run free. Set within Vinehall School, Little Vines has acres of space, including the school’s adventurous woodland area and modern, purpose built classrooms. Our hours are 8am-6pm. Children can start on as little as two morning sessions a week and stay for a hot, home-made lunch. So from the day a child turns two the fun begins! From 2 years old. Education Jacquie Burden - Year 5 teacher St Edmund’s School Canterbury What does the school do to promote awareness of the countryside? We have many acres of beautiful grounds which include trees, meadows, playing fields and ponds which can be enjoyed in leisure and academic life. Children in Pre-Prep and Junior School take part in Forest School activities and engage in environmental lessons outdoors regularly. The school is a member of both the Woodland and Wildlife Trust and benefits from their excellent array of activities and learning resources. How do you try to connect students with the natural world outside the classroom? Many of the teachers and children have land connections or come from farming backgrounds so there is a natural affiliation with nature. There are even two beekeepers amongst the school staff that are always happy to pass on their enthusiasm, knowledge and produce. For a number of years now, children in years 3-5 have been raising chicks in the Junior School garden! All these activities provide great handson learning opportunities in a very inclusive meaningful way. How much time do students spend outside during the school day? What outside space does the school offer? Lunch and playtimes amount to around 1.40 hours, plus there is an extensive PE and outdoor-learning curriculum with up to six hours of lesson time. At present, the pupils are designing a nature garden to cultivate wild flowers, make insect hotels and bird houses, have a chicken coop, rabbit hutch and guinea pig area – with building work commencing after half term. Are there opportunities for students to participate in field trips or extra-curricular activities that involve wildlife and its preservation? An understanding of how we are connected to the wider world is fostered by a great dedication to the idea of Fairtrade including workshops, speakers and whole school activities as part of our PSHE curriculum. Educational visits include farm visits, ploughing matches, coastal exploration and adventures to Iceland and many other parts of the UK and the world. Guest speakers from the Women’s Institute and NFU provide the school with an invaluable insight into larger environmental projects. If you are out and about at St Edmund’s, don’t be surprised to find a group of busy gardeners tending to their potato crop in the vegetable patches of the Junior School. It is always a highlight when children sell their school-grown lettuce, strawberries, onions and baby spinach to the parents during the summer term.
