<strong>LF</strong>HS cheerleaders make Valentine’s Day cards for veterans<br />

This year Lake Forest<br />

High School varsity<br />

cheerleaders spent their<br />

time finding ways to give<br />

back to the community<br />

and engage in more team<br />

bonding activities. As part<br />

of this goal they set in the<br />

beginning of the year they<br />

decided to make Valentine’s<br />

Day Cards for veterans<br />

of all ages who are<br />

hospitalized at James A.<br />

Lovell Federal Healthcare<br />

Center in North Chicago.<br />

Valentines for Veterans<br />

is a program coordinated<br />

through Midwest Veteran’s<br />

Closet in North Chicago.<br />

This organization<br />

provides services, clothing,<br />

household goods and<br />

toiletries to veterans, many<br />

of whom are homeless and<br />

are trying to get back on<br />

their feet. All services are<br />

provided at no cost.<br />

“We are not competitive<br />

this year and we decided<br />

because we weren’t going<br />

to be competitive this<br />

year we wanted to focus<br />

on team bonding activities,”<br />

said Kathryn Loberg<br />

the cheerleading coach.<br />

“We began looking around<br />

the community for ways<br />

to help out. We wanted to<br />

do something every month<br />

and February is Valentine’s<br />

Day so we were thinking<br />

of doing something for<br />

someone for Valentine’s<br />

Day and we thought ‘well<br />

who better than the veterans?’”<br />

The cheerleaders gave<br />

up their practice time on<br />

Feb. 6 to hand draw special<br />

cards to the veterans<br />

and wrote messages to<br />

them.<br />

“Originally we thought<br />

let’s make one or two each<br />

but as we started making<br />

them and got in the spirit<br />

and good feelings started<br />

happening and everyone<br />

was inspired by each other,”<br />

Loberg said. “It was so<br />

fun and it was honestly a<br />

peaceful and reflective activity.”<br />

The team continued<br />

making cards until all the<br />

supplies were gone and<br />

they had a total of 94 completed<br />

cards.<br />

“We made cards because<br />

we appreciate everything<br />

do for us and they deserve<br />

to know that people appreciate<br />

what they do,” said<br />

Katie Stovold, a sophomore<br />

on the cheerleading<br />

team at <strong>LF</strong>HS. “It feels<br />

really good to give back to<br />

the veterans because they<br />

are a crucial part of our<br />

country that works so hard<br />

everyday to make sure that<br />

we stay safe.”<br />

of the Infant Welfare<br />

Society of Chicago hosted<br />

its Valentine’s Day theme<br />

‘Bare Bones’ party on<br />

Feb. 15 at Lake Forest<br />

Showhouse & Gardens.<br />

The party served as the<br />

kick-off event for the 2017<br />

Lake Forest Showhouse &<br />

Gardens, which is open for<br />

tours April 29-May 21.<br />

The event was attended<br />

by 270 guests and gave<br />

members of the Lake Forest<br />

Chapter of the Infant<br />

Welfare Society an opportunity<br />

to view this year’s<br />

home before more than 30<br />

interior and landscape designers<br />

begin re image the<br />

estate.<br />

Regarded as one of the<br />

top 10 showhouses in the<br />

country, this year’s home<br />

is an east Lake Forest estate<br />

designed in 1921 by<br />

architect Howard Van<br />

Doren Shaw. As one of the<br />

most respected turn of the<br />

century architects, Shaw<br />

received a nod in the “The<br />

Great Gatsby” as the architect<br />

of character Daisy<br />

Buchanan’s Lake Forest<br />

home.<br />
